  1. "Meanwhile, people are standing around the cross saying, 'It's a shame he has to die;' and Jesus is up there going 'WELL MAYBE I WOULDN'T HAVE TO IF SOMEBODY'D GET A LADDER AND A PAIR OF PLIERS!' 'But the Bible says you have to die;' 'OH BY THE BOOK! BY THE BOOK'" Always loved that bit!
  2. Schuler's up there reminds me of Borders down here (same ownership?). Hopefully, the RVGs will be on sale down here as well!
  3. While I respectfully disagree--I think the power that Elvin brings to the session is actually a plus--I can certainly see where you're coming from. Man, I sure hope I can find a copy of UR. Elvin on brushes is a treat too often neglected. Anyone have a copy I can borrow for a week?
  4. Where are you guys ordering your copies from? I can't seem to find it anywhere! Have any of you heard the Great Jazz Trio's Autumn Leaves, which came out last year? Hank & Elvin, along with Richard Davis! Does a lineup get any more stellar than this?
  5. The middle one of course; how else could you drive? THAT is the truth!
  6. Maybe they mistook it for the sequel.
  7. NO kidding; that was cool! I have the version from the Miles/Coltrane box, and my favorite track is "Flamenco Sketches."

Oh wow, I didn't know that! But it's still a great album nonetheless!
  9. Another vote for Roy & Diz!!! The excitement on that disc is audible and contagious! And another vote for the Howard McGhee & Fats Navarro date. I can't wait for the Reece Mosaic Select to come out, just to hear Blues in Trinity.

Forgot to mention her lovely playing on the After Glow soundtrack, a disc very much worth seeking out, IMHO!

Twenty One has to be one of the grandest debut albums ever released. And the fact that she more than holds her own against such imposing figures as Carter and Williams belies her tender age! Yes, I do need to check out some of her other work!
  12. I still haven't had a chance to pick this one up, but I wanna comment on this edition of the Silver Quintet, as I don't think they had it in them to produce anything less than a stellar album! Right now, all I have is Finger Poppin' and Blowin' the Blues Away, and these are two powerhouse albums that are as fiery as anything put out by Silver's former boss in the Jazz Messengers!
  13. He was my favorite of that first crop of VJs. He seemed to be so much more in touch with the music and the musicians. Plus, the man had SOUL! Thanks for the memories, J.J. RIP
  14. UPdated for sales and trade bait. Happy shopping!
  15. Has anyone seen the picture of McLean & Tolliver on the inside of Right Now!??? Man, what's the deal with Jackie's teeth?!?!?!? Not that it matters; this is probably my favorite McLean date, and I'm so glad it's finally available domestically!
  16. Dark Chocolate Kit Kats........ mmmmmMMMMMMMM!!!!
  17. Happy Birthday Rooster!!!! Thanks for helping to keep this place so lively!

  19. So I'm at the library and looking for a good mystery from my wife when I happened upon the Kinky Friedman collection. Now, I've known about him for years and been tempted to check out his books, but never could bring myself to do it for one reason or another (in the middle of another book, no time, etc). Knowing that a vacation was around the corner, I grabbed the first book I saw, read a few pages, then had to be escorted from the library for laughing so loud. (Well, okay, that didn't REALLY happen; but it could've, and in the minds of some patrons, probably should've!) Anyway, the title in question is Blast from the Past, I'm on page 100-something, have yet to discern a plot, and I couldn't care less because I am laughing my ass off at every other sentence. Since there's no shortage of books by the man, and I'm sure I'm not gonna stop with this one, feel free to pile on with your favorite book of his. (I'm gonig with the assumption that jazzheads are natural Kinky fans).
  20. I've always felt sorry for ol' Lou: having his show stolen from him by Patton & Green gettin' in the pocket & dueling to the death! Green and Patton continuing their duel to the death. They had an ongoing duel spanning several sessions.
  21. I caught an episode of last night and laughed my ass off. It featured a game show called "I Know Black People" and a segment about "When 'Keepin' it Real' Gets Out of Hand" (or something like that). I gotta check out that DVD!
  22. I'm glad you saw them and posted about it, because they're playing DFW tomorrow night, and I'm thinking of going ("thinking" because I'm also not the usual concert-goer-type).
  23. Many thanks to all for your suggestions. Jeff Foxworthy... yeah, comedy to y'all; documentary for Texans (stolen from a billboard for King of the Hill; just as true, though) Bob Newhart..... yes! I've got the compilation Something Like This which never fails to send me into conniptions! Cosby.... oh yeah, we'll be taking those with us! "My father never turned the doorknob to get into my bedroom in his life...... PKSSSSHHHHHH!!!!!!" I just wish I wasn't the only one in my family who enjoys the old radio programs, especially Jack Benny. While I'm rolling on the floor, the rest of them are just kinda lookin' at me...... So, tomorrow morning we'll be hitting the road with the aforementioned Cosby tapes, "Stay Fit & Healthy 'til Your Dead" by Dave Barry (read by Arte Johnson), some Garrison Keillor comedy compilation (got the previous two from the library), and "The Collected e-mails of Jim R as Written to Big Al and Read by the Author." (Okay, I made up that last one; it would still have me in stitches)! See y'all in a few daze!

  25. Reminds me of various people I helped move when I was in college.....
