  1. D'you realize you haven't stopped talking since I got here? You must've been vaccinated with a phonograph needle! *********** MD: Good heavens! You can't go with your trousers up. Groucho: They'll never catch them any other way. *********** "And I've been saying since I first commenced it, I'm against it!" (Though taken from a picture, it seems like that was more autobiographical than anything else)
  2. Y'all know it! The Green session was my first introduction to him, particularly the session with Blakey where everyone's on fire! (Come to think of it, that was also my first Grant Green CD as well) You guys're right about his relaxed style. I guess in the past, his style just seem to be too dry for me. Now I realize he is an absolute (and underappreciated) master of SPACE! That started becoming clear with Jackie's Bag. I wanna hear A Fickle Sonance now, with the great Clark-Warren-Higgins team!
  3. I've got lots of Sonny Clark, but very little of it has ever clicked with me. Until I got Johnny Griffin's The Congregation. And my oh MY how it finally clicked. So now I'm scouring thru the rack here at the house to go back and listen with new ears, so to speak. There's just something about his playing on Congregation that is just so righteous; makes me wanna jump and shout AMEN!!! Right now I'm listening to the session on Vertigo with what must be considered Clark's most sympathetic rhythm-men, Butch Warren and Billy Higgins. Course, I love Higgins anyway, him and Butch together is a match made in heaven, and now that Clark's music has finally wormed its way into my soul, it's just all sorts of sweetness. Now, is there any rhythm section today that is as sympatico as these guys? not asking to try and glorify the past, but to see who's carrying the torch today. Much to discuss, I hope! (Edited for spelling; that'll teach me to start a post way past bedtime! )

Styx?!?!? Man, no one should have to suffer like that! "Red River Valley" does it for me, but I also dig "Tumblni' Tumbleweeds" as well. Hell, it's all good!
  6. Always loved this pun from Duck Soup: Margaret Dumont: What's that music? Groucho: Sounds like mice. MD: Mice?!? Mice don't play music! Groucho: Oh? How 'bout the old mice-tro? Or this from Cocoanuts: Groucho: Now over here's the levee. Chico: That'sa da Jewish neighborhood. Groucho: Well, we'll pass over that.
  7. “Right Now” Jackie McLean “Mimosa” Herbie Hancock “Downstairs Blues Upstairs” Sam Rivers (every one of ‘em!) “Pinocchio” Miles Davis “Flamenco Sketches” Miles Davis “Smoke Stack” Johnny Griffin “Know What I Mean” Cannonball Adderley There’s more, I’m sure
  8. I tell ya, after a cursory look at what’s going down today, I’m glad I made the switch ages ago. Thanks again, Jim; I’m just sorry you gotta keep an eye on that shit.
  9. I predict this will be the worst Rangers team since the early 80's. Hell, I could see 'em bringing back David Clyde!
  10. Man, does it get any greeeazier than "The Yodel?"
  11. I am SO there today!!! Great stuff! Wish I could play this in my car on the way home tonight!
  12. A friend made a copy of the 1st disc from the Curtis Amy Select, and you guys’re right: that shtuff is greeeeazy! I know the rest of the set ain’t this way, but I’m gonna pick it up anyway. This guy’s tone is so thick, he could make a hard bop session greeeeazy! Thanks for the headsup on the Macktet, Eric. I’m gonna check ‘em out!
  13. She’s just a Playboy spread and a psychic hotline call away from being mistaken for LaToya.
  14. What's on the menu for today? Great stuff, BTW!
  15. Ahhhh just make multiple copies and make more than one trip!
  16. Their new jazz selection is down to three pages and hasn't had anything noteworthy added since the Conns hit the page a few months back! Hopefully that means a slew of new additions is on the horizon!
  17. Mr. Tracy, if you see this, I just want to thank you for writing the liner notes to Terry Gibbs Dream Band, Volume 5: The Big Cat. Liner notes seldom crack me up while perfectly describing the album about which they're being written. Oh yeah, and welcome to the zoo.
  18. Defintely my favorite McLean session, and glad to have it available domestically again! While "Poor Eric" is an undeniable masterpiece, I love the title track and its alternate take. Very dark, very menacing! McLean at his fieriest!
  19. My sincerest condolences as well to you and your family. And thanks for posting the obit, too; hers appeared to be quite an inspired life. Hurry back, too; you'll be missed!
  20. Well, once again I want to thank Jim for this BFT, mainly because I'm listening to Something Personal, and I am loving every second of it. And I haven't even gotten to the BFT track yet! Also agree about the Howard Johnson track. What a swingin' tune!
  21. I received my disc today (Jack Wilson's Something Personal) after only having paid for it on Friday! So here's yet another vote of confidence for dealnig with Hank! Great service and great selection!
  22. This is a nice album; and the Verve Elite re-issue includes a whole extra Joe Gordon album with Blakey on drums. Yet another one I shoulda grabbed when I had the chance!
  23. Thanks for telling me, Lon! Getting the two boxes will be much easier to justify financially than getting the one box for twice as much! Big spender that I am, of course!
  24. Picked it up yesterday, and my oh my is it swingin'!!! You're absolutely right: I AM DIGGIN' IT!!! I could listen to "Tiger Rag" nonstop and not get tired of it! Gotta figure out a way to afford that Mosaic set!
  25. Floyd shoulda stopped at Meddle. Now THAT'S a fukkin' great album!
