  1. Any thoughts on Grant Green's BORN TO BE BLUE? Is it as good as the stuff on THE COMPLETE QUARTETS? I'm probably gonna get it anyway, but I'd still like to hear the thoughts of youse guys!
  2. DOTTY'S DREAM!!!
  3. This morning while driving to work, I was listening to Andrew Hill's Passing Ships. Ever since I got this disc, I've been intrigued by the picture of the guy wailing on the sax on the inside cover: he just looks so damn familiar! And not like "famous musician" familiar, but more of a "I know that guy familiar!" So Farrell comes blowing away, and it finally struck me why that picture looks so familiar: it's because Jim Sangrey looks EXACTLY like Joe Farrell!!! Hell, he even plays as well as him, too! I came to this realization after hearing Quartet Out's Welcome to the Party, that Farrell and Sangrey have a similar attack: warm, yet angular; inviting, yet exciting nonetheless! Anyone else (Jim included) notice the similarity? Or am I just really sleep-deprived right now?
  4. Same here.
  5. Track #11, Wynton Kelly, no?
  6. Dare I say it: the Duke Ellington Orchestra. I heartily acknowledge the accomplishments of Duke and celebrate his rightful place in the pantheon of music, jazz or otherwise. I can never tire of Duke’s piano playing, and in fact prefer him in a small-group session above anything else (the Hodges Back to Back and Side by Side sessions are, for me, the definitive Duke). But the Orchestra is a different matter. Somewhere along the line of the 100th Anniversary reissues, the music of the Orchestra all started to sound the same. Initial excitement about the latest reissues turned to general apathy once I heard sound clips from each session. I know Lon’s gonna come after me on this one.
  7. My thoughts exactly! If I hear "Kashmir" or "Money" on the radio one more time.....
  8. drat! B) (Just kidding, of course. I may not've got it had I waited, and I have a feeling it's gonna be worth every penny!)
  9. No kidding! I was half-expecting a disc full of the best of hatART music (which wouldn't have been bad either!). For a theme, I was thinking this was along the lines of, after a while, do piano trios begin to sound the same? With the answer being a resounding, HELL NO!!!
  10. Look at it this way: my buying it has EXPONENTIALLY increased the chances that it will be out on RVG before the year is out!
  11. Funny you should mention that, as I thought the same thing while listening to Blue Serge. It would've been a completely different Quintet, that's for sure; a comlpete contrast to the colorful block-chords that Red Garland painted with!
  12. Heck, just post!
  13. Got mine today! Really enjoying it, very relaxing! I think I detect a theme, too. Will post more detail after listening a couple more times! Great job, though. Another fine BFT to add to the collection!
  14. PM sent re: McLean
  15. Welcome to the zoo!
  16. You got THAT right!!! Pity that Blakey & Clark didn't record together more often; it's because of Blakey I got this disc to begin with, and neither one disappoints! And I so wanna get Leapin' and Lopin', for all the reasons mentioned in Joe's excellent review. But mainly just for that killer rhythm section of Clark/Warren/Higgins. Those guys could probably make Kenny G sound good!
  17. No kiddin’? Man, I think Griff & Clark click like nobody’s business! To each their own, I guess! And I am SO glad I didn’t get rid of Jubilee Shout like I’d been wanting to (sorry undergroundagent!). What cookin’ there be on there!!!!
  18. You got THAT right! Doncha just love the way Rollins holds that note between the end of the head and the beginning of the soloing? Talk about cranking up the intensity a notch!
  19. My favorite Sonny album. Period! Horace and Monk COOK on "Misterioso!" I heard "Wail March" on the radio and bought the CD as soon as I could find a record store. That's how good it is! Plus it's got Blakey on it! After hearing "Reflections," I've always wished that the quartet of Rollins-Monk-Chambers-Blakey had made a full album together. Non-stop-bop from the masters of the form, and J.J. kicks ass throughout and damn-near steals the show! In short, I LOVE THIS ALBUM!!!
  20. Al, funny you mentioned this particular song, as I was thinking the same thing on Sat. night while replaying the two versions several times over on the Evans Riverside box. You're talking about take 7, right? I guess; whichever is the longer take of the two (don't have the disc in front of me).

    Roger Humphries

Yeah he's good! Heck, the first time I heard him, which was "Song for My Father," for some reason I mistook him for Elvni Jones! Go figure!
  22. You KNOW it!!!! All those alternates are sweet, and I especially like the slow take of "Madness!" Noj named another one I like! Also like the alt. take of "Tequila" from the same session!
  23. Groovy avatar yo!!!
  24. Don't have it yet, but he seems to be all over the Bennie Green Mosaic Select. I guess that means Sonny was definitely the pianist of choice for Bennie!
  25. Chico: Ohh ho ho you no fool me; there is-a no Sanity Clause.
