I hear you, although there may be a lot you never really got to hear more than once (if that). I admire people who don't cave in, but I see no reason to avoid the Beatles.

You mean... first CD purchase, or...? Are you a casual fan, longtime fence-sitter...? Just curious.

Can we start a thread all about me?

Somehow, it seems a little too serious without the accompanying visual: (that ain't me, by the way... I'm much older... darker hair...) -
1. Your post was in response to my post, which was a minute late, and thus void. 2. I'm frightened by angry smileys that aren't accompanied by a winker to comfort me. 3. I hold the power to make this whole thread go "poof" if you so much as lurk the wrong way. Now... on your knees!

I just returned from the future in my time machine, and I have to report the bad news that no one even remembers the Beatles in 2309. Strangely enough, there is a Dave Clark Five revival going on... Damn, I didn't keep my DCF greatest hits LP.

I finally have a scorecard to keep track of this place! I forgot to respond to that. Fun stuff, Bev. Thanks. -
Reminds me of when I saw the Shearing Quintet. I saw Stevie in (I think) '75. Unfortunately, it was not the kind of setting that inspired intimacy and soft talking. It was the Cow Palace in SF, and he was so far away, the binoculars someone brought didn't even allow me to see his expressions.

I wouldn't claim to really know, but my instincts tell me otherwise. I'm 53, and a Beatles fan since I was 8 (1964), when I began buying the albums as they came out. I don't know many people my age who are still interested in buying CD's, especially music that we have known for so many years and owned in various (multiple) forms. I would tend to think that the 30-50 age group would include more people who are into the "discovery" (or re-discovery) of the music; the audiophile thing; and frankly, adding more material things into their life! (in my experience, people like to start getting rid of stuff- especially when you get into your 60's and beyond). Bottom line, though, I think audiophiles are a minority among the general populace of music lovers, and that's really the main draw here. Plus, most of us who grew up with the Beatles can hear all of this music without actually playing it. Unless they've already begun the process of clutter reduction. But yeah, I'm sure there are many like myself who see them as treasures and continue to hold onto them, even if they no longer play them. I wonder if the butcher cover (including the paste-over versions) would be an exception, since a lot of people probably have let go of them for the cash.

In the past, there have been some compilers (Big Al comes to mind) who have offered a 2nd disc as a "bonus" option for those who have time for 2 discs. For those that don't want to take that on, no big deal that they sit out that discussion. I think it's the way to go. I enjoy the increased odds that I'll get hip to something new, and have more fun sleuthing. I have never quite understood how an extra 80 minutes of music can be such a time burden over the span of time (a couple of weeks, on average?) that it takes to do a BFT discussion- especially in that most of us usually listen to music constantly anyway, but I guess everybody's different.
-
I'll be damned (well, not really). The other day, I had tried googling "this joint's too hip for me", and came up with nuthin'. I just tried it again and... bingo. I swear there are some Google Gremlins somewhere in my system (seriously, I have had off-and-on results like this before from google searches). At any rate, never heard of her! (and I generally know everything).

That was aired here some months back, and I thought it was very good. Our local PBS affiliates have been in a gradual decline over the past decade or so (Riverdance, Yanni, Suzie Orman, Andre Rieu, etc etc etc), but there are still the occasional gems to be found.

I was never into the brit guitarists very heavily, having already been into the american blues players they were emulating. I will say I really dug "Blow By Blow" when it came out, though. That was the best Beck stuff I ever heard. I tried listening to it again about a year ago, and it didn't do much for me any more. I will give the guy credit for being quite a technical wizard... I just never wanted to play like that.

Who the hell is "esteemed" around here? I often see quite a few people who are "steamed", but... But yeah, guys being starved for attention can turn me off too. Maybe take a year and a half off like I did? No, no, don't do that. Let's ask Allen to do that (feels safe in ribbing Allen, having exchanged PM's with him today). -
This one still has me puzzled, and I'm still trying to figure out Jim's "code" here...

Interesting... I heard a resemblance to Johnny Guitar Watson, but Dr. John has a similar vocal sound.

"I don't think the Kisor DATE'S on Criss Cross ..." And "b" is only two letters away from "d" Oh Christ. I swear I thought the same thing when I first read it, but my senility kicked in when the subject came back up (or maybe I just wanted to go for a joke too much).

This thread makes me feel dirty.

Sort of. All the tracks from "True Blue", plus most of the tracks from "Silver Blue" (the 17-minute title track was omitted) were on a Xanadu CD (issued by E.P.M., France) in 1990.

I'm kind of torn. I haven't really had the urge to put my name on the list since my one experience as a compiler/leader (BFT #3), but that had more to do with the length of the waiting list (something on the order of two years) the last time I considered the idea. I gradually became inactive for awhile as a general participant, but I haven't completely lost interest in participating (in fact I'm enjoying Dan's current test), and of course, hosting/compiling/leading (what the hell is the accepted term?!?) is where most of the fun is at. So, I would definitely consider doing another one. Like Hot Ptah, I'd want to learn how to upload, though. I think mailing CDR's all over the world is kind of too much trouble. I think it would be an improvement if everybody stepped up their game in terms of a) Joining the discussion promptly; and b) being more interactive after the discussion starts (in other words, responding more actively to the comments/guesses made by others). It's fine when everybody posts once with their guesses, and then has one interaction with the leader, but if that's all there is... it gets a bit stale. Also, this has probably been brought up in the past, but I think we face an obstacle in terms of the huge scope of the music we call "jazz". In my own experience, while I certainly fully respect the tastes of others and their right to choose whatever type of music they want, I have often been at a total loss to know what to do with (for example) 2 CD's worth of free/avant garde music. It's my own limitation, my own "fault" for not being able to hang in that kind of discussion, but there's really not much I can do about it, other than not signing up if I happen to know the taste of the leader ahead of time. I think I was surprised at the number of tests which included a significant amount of music that was outside my realm of knowledge and interest. I probably should have expected that, and I know it's only natural, but nonetheless it resulted in a certain level of decline in my own personal interest in participating. If there's a solution to this "problem", I haven't figured it out yet. And btw, I'm sure there are numerous members out there who may see this "problem" in reverse (people who gagged when they heard my disc). Anyway, fwiw... I'm glad this discussion has come up. Hopefully this thing can be revived, because it really can be a lot of fun.

Thanks Allen. I'll see if I can track down some of those. Btw, check your PM's.
