  3. I don't know what's wrong with me. I STILL make it a point to try to watch every Warriors game, but they are truly sucking... playing way below their potential. They've lost 8 of their last 10, including back-to-back giveaway losses to... Atlanta and Charlotte. Both road losses, but games they should have won. Every time they get a decent lead and/or some momentum- even late in a game, somebody (even the vets) make a few bonehead plays (ill-advised shots, bad passes, DUMB fouls, complete lapses in basic defensive fundamentals, etc etc), and they refuse to win. This was supposed to be a "rebound" year for a franchise whose fans have suffered for too long. Pretty sad, if not pathetic. Guy, have you been witnessing any of this, or are you just less foolish than me?
  4. Nice, Joe. If I was going to look for another bike (and who knows, I may have to now that climbing the hills on my favorite trail is getting a bit more difficult), that's pretty close to a dream machine. I'm still toolin' around on my 90's Schwinn cruiser deluxe (below is a photo of a very similar version): I had a couple of ten speeds when I was a kid (60's, 70's)- a Mercier and a Bianchi (nothing fancy). The Mercier was beautiful... a gift from my Dad when I was 13. She got stolen out of a friend's garage... 30 years later, I'm still pissed.

  10. Marcus, Sorry I missed your post. I can't tell you what's still available, but here are the Os Cariocas titles that have come out on CD (except for compilations, of which there have been several). Os Cariocas- 1963- A Bossa Dos Cariocas / Mais Bossa Com- Philips (Japan) ("A Bossa Dos Cariocas" has also been released on CD by itself) Os Cariocas- 1989, 1990- A Minha Namorada- Som Livre Os Cariocas- 1991- Reconquistar- WEA (Warner) Os Cariocas- 1997- A Bossa Brasileira- Albatroz (There's also one newer one, which I don't have... don't really like the new group as much as the old one) Not on CD, as far as I know: Os Cariocas- 1964- A Grande Bossa Dos Cariocas- Philips* (*this was reported to have been released on CD in Japan, but I've never found any evidence of that) Os Cariocas- 1965- Introducing Os Cariocas- Philips (US) Os Cariocas- 1966- Arte / Vozes- Philips ====== I'm glad you listed the new releases from Som Livre. I've been waiting for some of those for YEARS! I already ordered about 8 of them.

  13. Glad to hear it, but it's not a practical way to bring PBS's musical fare back to where it was 30 years ago. I mean even if they go out and arrest Andre Rieu, Benise (is that his name?), Michael Buble, etc etc, they'll all still be on every other night in reruns. Not only that, but how do you arrest the entire cast of Riverdance? Just not practical.

  15. First of all, Lon makes a great point. There's so much to do on Maui, but don't get so busy running around the island that you miss out on the tranquility aspect. I've been to Oahu, Maui, and the big island, and done a variety of things. The first time I went (1981), we were in Oahu, and we went to the botanical gardens. Being an active person (and only 25 at the time), I was expecting to be bored, but that experience has "stayed with me". My absolute #1 favorite activity on Maui (I've done it twice) is the bike trip down Haleakala. We normally take the morning tour ("Mountain Riders" was the outfit we chose)- not the sunrise one where you have to get up in the middle of the night, but the regular morning tour. They pick you up around breakfast time in their van, drive you to the summit (if the wind isn't blowing too hard), and you ride (coast, actually- you're basically just braking and rarely have to pedal) down through lovely scenery and with incredible views. With the stop for lunch, it's all very leisurely, and you're done by early afternoon. The Hana trip (which I've never taken but heard several first-hand accounts of) is a long car ride, windy road around the coastline. I guess there are some fairly interesting sights (Lindbergh's grave is the one I recall), but the idea never appealed to me as much... too much time in the car. The snorkel trip out to Molokini is pretty neat. You'll see more fish (and perhaps turtles) than you would if you just went out yourself to one of the island's bays (Kapalua, Napili, etc), but it's also a bit time consuming (boat ride back and forth, and the fact that you're with a group). Pros and cons, as always. I've never been over to Lanai (nor Kauai). Other recommended Maui stops (if you happen to have time): Lahaina; the Iao Valley; the aquarium near Kihei.

    René Thomas

I've always liked that photo. First saw it when I got Norman Mongan's "The History Of The Guitar In Jazz" back in the early 80's. Haven't seen it anywhere else since! I'm sure Thomas was heavily influenced by Django early on, but I hear much less of Django in Thomas' style and sound, as compared to Raney. I think of Thomas' sound as being somewhat similar to Raney's (especially the 50's recordings), but with an added "bite" that became more evident as time went on.

  23. GA, didn't you say you never open the "Hard Bossa" thread? I have a feeling you should, as it includes a variety of recommendations of Brazilian music. I started it with a focus on Bossa/Brazilain jazz groups (especially some of the early piano trios), but it's gone beyond that somewhat. Anyway, just a thought. I don't really keep track of all the labels and who's releasing what, but I agree- there are some gems to be had from Brazil... past and present.
  24. Up until now, it had been a successfully repressed memory... I had one quiana shirt (a gift from my mother-in-law to be)... that thing would make you sweat before you got it on. I associate it with a specific pair of pants I wore with it (let's not go there)... All in all, an outfit that still haunts me 30 years later (NO goofy hat, though).
