  1. Me too. Maybe revive the RVG series? Re The Three Sounds again I wonder if the addition of the non-BN material would make it a less samey proposition for Mosaic. It's annoying that the one company that might do a set like this is run by a man with such a strange prejudice against it.
  2. Thanks for the comments on 50 Great Albums. I actually quite like Wynton's classical playing...
  3. I'm toying with getting this. It's very cheap, it's an imaginative selection and a look at Amazon reviews for some of the albums brings up a lot of 5-star ratings. But I'm wondering how great all of these 50 albums really are. Some of them, such as the one by Chick Corea and Bobby McFerrin worry me slightly -- I don't want a box of lifestyle muzak and smooth crossover Classic FM stuff.
  4. Universal could now put out a comprehensive Three Sounds box since they own their Blue Note, Verve, Limelight and Mercury recordings. But they won't.
  5. That plus the 10 or so discs replicated in the Rubinstein and Heifetz big boxes put me off the Volume Two for sure. One you've factored that in its more like £48 for 25 discs which is still good but not that good.
  6. The Beach Boys six-discer Made In California is about £32 from two Amazon Marketplace sellers, one US, one UK, here. I got mine this morning from the UK seller Mediamine – perfectly fine.
  7. Cheers Ricky. Like many here I appreciate the work you and Mosaic have put into this set.
  8. Ah yes, Maynard Fergson. That's another one I don't have. C'mon, Warner!
  9. Yes, CD definitely. Lossless downloads would be fine if the price were right. Thing is, I don't think Warner has traditionally made much of its jazz holdings, so I'm not getting my hopes up. But you never know. The Roulette Basies are basically what I want. I'm more optimistic about Universal, but cautiously: the Hip-o label hasn't released any jazz sets for years now.
  10. Unusually the discography doesn't have the usual track listing with track numbers and composers. Is that included in the booklet as usual?
  11. That confirms what I suspected: that the Roulette/Roost labels were part of the Parlophone deal that went to Warner when EMI was broken up (they also got Chrysalis and Virgin). I imagine that since Warner also got EMI Classics the deal included all the UK-based labels (although Roulette/Roost were US Mosaic eventually found the masters in London) with the US-based material going to UMG. Now will Warner reissue their Roulette Mosaics as they did the Reprise Ellington? Probably not.
  12. The actual box isn't on Spotify but many of the albums are. That's what I listened to. I don't know of any other free streaming sites.
  13. Unfortunately the price has increased to £38. Still cheap, but not the huge bargain it was. Hope you didnt sleep on it like I did!
  14. Yeah, I've not been into soul before but I spent some time listening to music from this set on Spotify last night and enjoyed it. I think I'm going to get this one. Another bargain: The Byrds album collection about £26 on Amazon UK.
  15. Both Living Stereo boxes are under £48 at Amazon UK: Volume One Volume Two
  16. If only they would find a box of Nat Cole sets simllarly mislabelled!
  17. Sony's forthcoming Philadelphia International box is £28 preorder on Amazon UK (20 discs). More details on The Second Disc.
  18. Good one -- thanks GAR. As usual, a mix of some you will already have, some you won't. The side of the box fills in some of the titles: Louis Armstrong: Satch Plays Fats Cab Calloway: The Hi De Ho Man Johnny Mathis: eponymous first album Bing Crosby: Bing With a Beat Harry Belafonte: Sings the Blues Jimmy Rushing: Rushing Lullabies Buddy Greco: Songs for Swinging Losers Oscar Brown: Sin & Soul ...and Then Some
  19. Meanwhile, back with the bargains, I've spotted a couple more Perfect Jazz boxes from French Columbia: Perfect Vocal Jazz: Male Singers: £26.07 at Amazon UK (15 discs) Perfect Vocal Jazz: Female Singers £34.92 at Amazon UK (16 discs) Hard to tell what's on the male one (there are a few cover shots on the edge) but Amazon Germany says the female one has: Sarah Vaughan After Hours 1961 Ella Fitzgerald Live at Carnegie Hall (2 CDs) 1973 Billie Holiday Lady In Satin 1958, Rosemary Clooney Blue Rose 1956, Lena Horne Give The Lady What She Wants 1958, Helen Merrill Parole e Musica 1960, Carmen McRae Sings Lover Man and other Billie Holiday Classics 1961, Jeanne Lee and Ran Blake The Newest Sound Around 1961, Doris Day & André Previn Duet 1962, Aretha Franklin Yeah!!! 1965, Betty Carter Social Call 1955, Etta James Time After Time 1995, Rose Murphy The Chee-Chee Girl 1948, Lisa Ekdahl When Did You Leave Heaven 1998, Eliane Elias Dreamer 2004
  20. It looks like this one has gone out of print. It's now going for $94.36. The superior UK edition is still available from Network and cheap at £30: Danger Man
  21. FLAC downloads would suit me fine -- would save me the trouble of ripping and then storing the redundant boxes. But I would want to fo my own tagging: I don't trust record companies to do it right. This is a good point but I wonder if it applies specifically to Britain. Of course there are a lot of Brits on this forum and elsewhere who like jazz but I've always sensed that most British people actively hate it.
  22. If there were any I would expect budget boxed-up versions of material most of us here already have, in the same masterings. Great for newbies and for filling gaps in collections, not always interesting to middle-aged hard-core collectors. Certainly if Universal Italy got to work on Blue Note there are a few boxes they could reissue that I overlooked at the time, Herbie Nichols for one. It's weird how several EMI (as was) Mosaics have appeared on Spotify. I wonder if there's a more flexible rights issue there that could lead to physical reissues. I'd jump on any of Andrew Hill, George Shearing and Larry Young, to name but three oop examples.
  23. No smell on mine, although I haven't torn off the cellophane yet. Still not sure if I should try to get a correctly aligned one. Where did you get yours?
  24. Amazon UK Although I paid £165. It's £236 now.
