    Pablo reissues

Concord is reissuing five albums from Norman Granz's Pablo label on September 17: Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Pass, Ray Brown and Mickey Roker, Dizzy’s Big 4 (1974) Zoot Sims, Zoot Sims and the Gershwin Brothers (1975) Art Tatum, The Art Tatum Solo Masterpieces, Volume 1 (1975) Duke Ellington and His Orchestra, The Ellington Suites (1976) Oscar Peterson and Stephane Grappelli, Skol (1979) Details here.
  2. Elgar's Chanson de Matin The Adagio cantabile from Beethoven's Pathétique Sonata Ravel's Pavane pour une infante défunte Irving Berlin's Count Your Blessings (Instead Of Sheep), They Say It's Wonderful
  3. I'm betting that at some point the box will be available at a price that would amount to the cost of 15 discs, or less, so you could consider the other 20 a bonus. Then pack away (or give away) the 20 you don't need along with the box and keep handy the 15 good'uns.
  4. It's been done! Regarding the Herbie box, I too will get this if the price drops, as I expect it will. I have hardly anything from this period of his career. It will be fun to explore it for the first time.
  5. I've also been checking Amazon's international sites, so far to no avail.
  6. Debussy's Clair de Lune J.S. Bach's Sheep May Safely Graze Richard Rodgers's My Romance, It Never Entered My Mind Jerome Kern's Bill, They Didn't Believe Me, The Way You Look Tonight
  7. The Andante cantabile from Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini The Intermezzo from Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana Meditation from Massenet's Thais Richard Rodgers's You'll Never Walk Alone, Something Wonderful, This Nearly Was Mine, If I Loved You George Gershwin's Someone to Watch Over Me, Isn't It a Pity?
  8. Van himself slagged off that reissue of Moondance on his website recently. Since he is the most negative man to have ever walked the Earth, however, his disdain probably doesn't count for much: Yesterday Warner Brothers stated that "Van Morrison was reissuing Moondance". It is important that people realise that this is factually incorrect. I did not endorse this, it is unauthorised and it has happened behind my back. My management company at that time gave this music away 42 years ago and now I feel as though it's being stolen from me again. 18th July 2013
  9. Still no sign of the Dexter Gordon box in that series being marked down. If anyone sees a good deal, please let us know.
  10. He also wrote the scores for Chuck Jones's later cartoons, including Tom and Jerry and the Bugs Bunny TV specials. Very heavy-handed and much of their time, I rather like them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMP-stjTnb0
  11. That's cool, although the reason I've often heard is that the music is too samey for a Mosaic. But there are plenty of samey Mosaics anyway: Johnny Smith, Bobby Hackett, Four Freshmen...
  12. Michael Cuscuna has done a great deal for recorded jazz and we all owe him a debt of thanks, but his prejudices can be *really* annoying.
  13. Coincidentally I passed a branch of Five Guys in Covent Garden last night. Didn't know we had it over here. There was a queue out the door. Is it really that good?
  14. I ate at Shake Shack when I was in NY last year. A very long queue for a good, but not amazing burger. There is comething of a craze for burgers in London at the moment with posh burger chains and indies popping up all over the place. Byron is probably the highest rated, but my favourite is still the original Ed's Easy Diner in Soho; a Big Bubba with Atomic Fries and a butterscotch malt is a pre-theatre dinner that cannot be beat.

Thanks. I assume you've bought direct from them? I never have, although I've bought from their Amazon Marketplace account and have emailed them with release requests (never got a reply). Sadly, this is all the jazz we will be getting this time. The home page says that part 2 will be popular music.

    How do you know?
  17. It should be compulsary to shout "bravo" at a classical concert. If this action isn't taken it will soon go the way of saying "chin-chin" when drinking and shouting "good show" at a cricket match.
  18. Bear Family should do a Nancy Wilson set, her discography is so disorganised, but unfortunately they are looking the wrong way. Corruscating is a word that people get wrong so often (assuming it means "excoriating") that it's nice to see it used correctly.
  19. I think you are thinking of Dr. Terror's House of Horrors. Amusingly for British viewers the trumpeter was played by Roy Castle, a light entertainer (and trumpeter) who presented a long-running children's series called Record Breakers. Tubby Hayes also makes an appearance.

  21. It's OK, I agree with you that Jarrett takes it to extremes. I just also think it's unnecessary for person B to cough because person A just did, then person C and so on. Unless you're choking on something or have bronchitis there isn't any need to do it. It's throat clearing actually.
  22. I wouldn't know how to go about doing it if that's what you mean ("Hmm, think I'll do a bit of coughing out of restlessness now"). But it's surely the main reason why bouts of coughing break out in theatres during quiet moments. It's a nervous reaction that's easily controlled but spreads quickly once it's started.
  23. True, but the thing is: he's right. You should make sure your phone is turned off before you enter a theatre. You should avoid coughing out of restlessness during a live performance. My only quibble is that he seems to be enforcing these rules for his own benefit. In fact, they should be observed out of the respect of everybody in the auditorium.
  24. ...because they don't sell? I speak as someone who doesn't really enjoy jazz organists. they did very nice big boxes of Jimmy Smith and Larry Young But those were a loo-oong time ago. John Patton could have justified a big box but instead he got a rather frustrating Select. A Freddie Roach Select was mooted at one point, but never happened. I'm guessing Head Man is right and that they don't sell. Pity as a Shirley Scott Impulse box would be great.
