  1. The box looks exactly the same but it has a very strong odor of offset printing. The individual sleeves are lighter weight I think and are very difficult to get the disks out of. All of the cover markings and booklets look like they were copied exactly. The disks themselves are grayish, not black, so they look kind of like worn records. I'm guessing in the legit box they are darker. Perhaps the bootlegs spurred Sony to put it back in print again. Got my Heifetz this morning. Haven't examined it yet but the lid isn't aligned with the rest of the box (ie, the album cover shots that are split across lid and box aren't lined up). Not a biggie with me if it's still legit but enough to suggest a boot? I hope not.
  2. The last few books I've read: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick: the third of his that I've read. Brilliant and quite cinematic (I haven't seen Blade Runner) Flowers For Algernon by Daniel Keyes: I get chills just typing the title. Very moving and actually quite upsetting. This book meant a lot to me. Christmas Holiday by W. Somerset Maugham: flawed construction but the prose is peerless as always. Got me back into Maugham. The Painted Veil by W. Somerset Maugham: now this is more like it. The transformation the main character undertakes is brilliantly done. Now on W. Somerset Maugham's Cakes and Ale: this might be one of his lesser efforts I expect but gorgeous prose as always.
  3. Thanks. Yes, it's Marketplace only now. Sheesh. Wonder if I should go for it now or wait until this gets a reprint EDIT: I bought it. In the same week as the Heifetz. My wife will kill me.
  4. Thanks for flagging this up. Just ordered it from Amazon UK for £165.54. I dithered and missed it the first time around. I don't know when I'l get round to listening to it and it's a big outlay, but it's clearly one of the all-time great boxed sets of any genre. Now should I get the Rubinstein..?
  5. In fact that disc is in the bargain box you linked to. It's a great CD, the highlight for me being Some Girl is On Your Mind also from Very Warm for May. The Jerome Kern Treasury is also in that box -- superb. This is a fascinating thread btw. I've long been a fan of McGlinn's work but knew nothing about the man and between yours and JSngry's posts I'm learning a great deal. Thanks.
  6. From the moment I picked up your book until I laid it down, I was convulsed with laughter. Some day I intend to read it.

  9. See my post from this morning -- sadly, no full booklet.
  10. Just received it. There is a booklet but it's only the tracklisting (looks like it was copied from the original).
  11. I'm quite hopeful. The Brown, Jarrett and Parker boxes each had cheapo facsimiles of the original books (as far as I could tell). Mine was dispatched today so I'll report back when it arrives.
  12. Well I got one of my wishes for 2014 already: the Bud Powell Verve box has had a budget reissue from Universal Italy. It's £16.13 at Amazon UK. Anybody else had any wishes granted yet? Might be nice to post them here as and when/if they come up.
  13. The Verve box has now been given a budget reissue in the EU. £16.13 for 5 discs at Amazon UK.
  14. That's true, which is how Rodgers and Hammerstein could write a "Shall We Dance" after the Gershwins and Paul Weller a "You Do Something To Me" after Cole Porter.
  15. That's an interesting thought about Dean Martin. I always thought of him as the link between Bing and Elvis.
  16. I love the two albums the Mills Brothers did with Basie. Gentle on My Mind is a standout. This is my favourite track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCmRa2wniv4
  17. Yeah, but only four releases and one is of Universal material (the Billie Holiday), whereas Conniff is Sony. It's beginning to look a lot like PD... But, Osie Johnson. Yes, that's interesting. Most of Conniff's sides end with the same drum lick. Interesting if it's him doing them.
  18. Do any of the Conniff fans (I know there aren't many) on here know what this is? The label is listed as Masterworks, which should be Sony, but on Amazon.de it's Pid, on Amazon.fr it's Mis. I just want to make sure it's not one of those Andorran/EU public domain monstrosoties before I order.
  19. All very helpful -- thanks again. I'll weigh up the relative merits of the two Atlantic boxes. Disc 6 of the bigger one being an interview puts me off somewhat, though.
  20. Something like this? Or is there something more complete for Atlantic? I have the Columbia albums and one or two others (Money Jungle of course) but as I've never been struck with him, I haven't gone any further.
  21. This review from an archive TV site might be useful.
  22. Thanks guys. As I'm not that into Mingus (yet, I always say "yet") I'll hold off for now.
  23. Having been a bit resistant to Mingus over the years I'm toying with getting this set. At 7 discs it's about half the size of the complete set. I'm assuming it's a straight repackaging of something, but I'm not sure what. There is no track listing anywhere. Any ideas?
  24. Good advice, Scott. I'll look into it.
