Me too! I finally took the plunge 2 weeks ago. I'm on the $9 plan (one DVD in your possession). I'm very pleased. I just sent back my 4th rental. There are tons of T.V. shows that I'd rather not buy at $20 - $30 a pop. Now I can sample them ad nauseam.

They make great wall art! I've got Parlan, Turrentine, Teagarden, and Farmer/Golson decorating my cubicle right now, with a couple of others awaiting their rotation. Each box cover is bruised, but you can only tell close up. I actually have two battered Turrentines and Farmer/Golsons because DHL couldn't even deliver an empty box to me without beating the crap out of it.

I thought the B.D.F. Mosaic included all the Sonny Clark recordings. I know that Verve title wasn't listed. What am I missing?

Hopefully that doesn't mean sitting and collecting dust. I'm still deciding this one. Hmmm, I've had just the opposite experience. I'm actually glad Mosaic doesn't use DHL anymore and gives you the option of USPS Priority Mail instead. I've got a whole cubicle wall full of black box covers as remnants of battered parcels that I sheepishly had to ask Mosaic to replace, sometimes more than once per order. Two-day DHL from Stamford to San Diego was notoriously bad (at least for me). On the bright side, my cube looks kind of cool and is the model for our department!

You know what? That's why I like this forum. I've bashed this Mosaic set a couple of times because it hasn't stuck with me yet, but several folks including yourself have mentioned how much they've enjoyed The Swinging Guitar, which starts on Disc 4. I will give it another listen. I came in cold with Farlow (as I've done with most Mosaic sets). Admittedly, I didn't like the Joe Pass set the first couple of times I listened to it. Now it's a top 10 favorite of mine.

Which of the releases would you qualify as big sellers? Nearly all timed out before the maximum were produced. Judging from one I bought 3 years ago, I would think it's at least in the 6000 range by now, which is pretty good in comparison. Not even the Gerry Mulligan Concert Band maxed out AFAIK (but I could be mistaken if it also came in a Euro edition). I bought one from Mosaic well after it went OOP (trolling the Last Chance page, sometimes you see extremely limited reappearances), and it was auto-generated at 4977 before being scratched out for a redux.

Welcome! I'm a relative newbie to jazz too (2006) and to this forum, so I don't much. Nor do I have many examples of what you're looking for, but what I do have just happen to be Mosaics (and if you haven't been introduced to Mosaic Records yet, I do NOT want to be the one that gives you "the fever." ). These two box sets put me to sleep every time: MD7-224, The Complete Verve Tal Farlow Sessions MD4-120, The Complete Recordings of the Paul Desmond Quartet with Jim Hall The first is still in print, but the second is not and can be pricey on the secondary market. However, it can be had in a less expensive non-Mosaic version. Good luck with your discovery!

Louis Armstrong - Complete Decca All Stars, discs 2 & 3. Surely one of the all time best Mosaics.

This was released on both LP and on CD. This was not an original score, but a collection of standards arranged/played by pianist Dick Hyman. Thanks, Jim, but yes, I was referring to the original score. Little did I didn't know it at the time, but most--if not all--the tunes were remakes of famous ones from days gone by. I got hooked on the remakes and haven't been able to find them on CD.

From the first time I watched Woody Allen's Hannah And Her Sisters, I was enraptured by the score and quickly sought the soundtrack album. Alas, one was never produced.

The best of the five IMO, although my favorite tune is on disc 4 when Booker Ervin starts. I crank up the stereo for that one.

Sorry to keep this thread going, but... SecondSpin just lowered the price today by $8! Now it's an extremely good deal at $20.99 for either the Interplay or Fearless Leader sets. They have lots of them so I would expect their condition to be similar to the Art Pepper Village Vanguard sets they were selling earlier this year (brand new and practically giving them away, as one member put it). Same reason why I can't deal with the second disc to Chet Baker - Complete Pacific Jazz Studio Recordings Mosaic set. Those tracks are on permanent disable.

Who can recommend the red box over the two smaller boxes, Interplay and Fearless Leader? The latter are remastered whereas the red box hails from the early 1990's. I have the Complete Riverside Thelonious Monk from that period and have no qualms about sound quality. That's okay, BeBop, you can whack this thread if you want. I've spent the last couple of hours pouring over old threads dealing with this topic and the jury seems to be split. Some folks swear by the big box, including the sound quality; others think the smaller boxes sound better and are more manageable. For me I sorely missed out on the Concord blowout that had this set priced at $70 three summers ago. But today I can buy the two smaller sets for $50 including tax with the secondspin sale (good until 8/13), so I'm roughly in the same ballpark. BTW, whatever happened to that promised 3rd set that was supposed to include everything else (Coltrane as a sideman)? Did it ever materialize?

I think that one was brand new, from a seller who seems to have a lot of low numbered (some single digit), very early, brand new sets. Has "Blue Note" in his moniker and is from Stamford, CT. Wonder if it's the company itself selling some excess stock? (I know, I know, it could be anybody, but who's fortunate to get a single numbered set besides some big wig?) New or mint Buddy De Franco's go for about that much. However, I noticed a brand new LP version went recently for $200 less. Isn't that a certain 'Mr C.' of Stamford, CT?
