  1. I will take all comments w/ a grain of salt. and i hope you take my BFT picks w/ a black and tan...
  2. that's a pleasure to read. that young person has his head on straight
  3. been here at the forum for just over 3 years now but this is my 1st time hosting the famed Organissimo BFT! no theme for this one, but there is (hopefully) a "flow" that would make this little collection listenable for the long haul. it generally starts "in" and flows toward more "out" material, but everything is relatively in the pocket here. nothing really out. that's not by design or personal taste - just turned out that way. some stuff was chosen 'cuz there was an artist i thought maybe should get heard more. some because i thought maybe i had stuff from an artist others likely did not. and other stuff i just fucking like but all w/ the thought in mind that hopefully not everyone here would know 'em right off. i'm concerned that maybe too many tunes here are "gimmes" (sp?) for the astute "O" board members. i guess we'll see hoping for as many listeners as possible of course, and anyone who wants a hard copy disc just let me know and i'll send one out. jeff has graciously offered to help w/ putting up downloads for anyone who is cool w/ that format. thanks jeff! let 'er rip and enjoy... 4. this is what i think of pretty much whenever Levon comes to mind: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJtkACrOymQ sad to think of him being gone soon.
  5. Levon Helm is the man. sad to hear he's not well. fuck... "Don'tchya do it. Don't do it. Don'tchya break my heart. Pleeaaaz!" great musician man. just great. will try to motivate and put together a short tribute vid for the man but i just don't have time tonight. for some reason when i think of him, i usually picture him singing the song i quoted. one of my all-time favorites. he just nails it so beautiful and heartfelt.
  6. same thing i posted before, but we now have a visual aid... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tR_Owy9Fb3M watch on youtube in "full screen" mode for a better look...
  7. here come my "non-insights" on 12-16: Track 12 - some nice bass playing here. Not too interested in the rest. no guess… Track 13 - Pipe organ? again, excellent playing but not doing much for me. No guess… Track 14 – I like. Great energy and craft. Nice balance of in/out, time/rubato, lines/harmonies, and all that kinda shit ☺ I especially liked the alto solo – the player reminded me of hemphill though I don’t think it’s him. Feeling nervous to write this, and likely will take a modicum of crap for it, but I didn’t care for the trumpet solo and to my ear/mind it sounds quite a bit like Wynton. This would go along w/ my regularly not enjoying his playing much but occasionally enjoying his writing quite a bit. Guessing Wynton. Track 15 – again, cool somewhat unusual instrumentation. But it didn’t do too much for me. 2:57 - 3:10 made my mind go back to Conference Of The Birds for some mysterious reason No guess… Track 16 – is this an excerpt? Cool little bookend to the BFT ☺ Enjoyable KingUbu! I didn’t feel as close to anything on here as compared to last month, but then again, I didn’t hit any last month either. Thanks man…
  8. reasonably fun thread to read through. it reminded me of the end of a review i wrote 'bout 7 years ago. it applies to a few records every year: "The media affair regarding [insert current 'it' artist name here] is well underway. [insert title of current 'it' artist's release here] may lead some critics to celebrate the arrival of the "future of jazz," or cause others to feel compelled to refute such claims. But the reality is not so black and white. Those who are preoccupied with finding an artist to label the "future of jazz" can't see the trees for the forest. Innovation is sometimes incremental and often not easy to detect. It's all a continuum. We need faith that the pursuit of excellence supplies the energy to keep jazz moving forward. Innovation need not always be a "change of the century." It often hides in the shadows, tucked into a brilliant corner like a precocious child smiling to himself with a secret. There may well be such a child tucked into [insert title of current 'it' artist's release here]."
  9. terrific, "balanced," and quite readable article. thanks for posting.
  10. fake scrambled eggs (egg beaters) w/ sauteed yellow and orange peppers in olive oil. a little gouda cheese over the top and one piece of cracked wheat toast w/ a little butter. two cups of coffee... way cool thread by the way. i will try to motivate and take photos of my breakfasts to po st
  11. already guessed wrong w/ Harrell. is it bad form to guess twice in a BFT? i have one more guess... Sure, go ahead! Don't know of any bad forms around here... would be delighted to get second round comments or whatever goes through your head! cool. i like the track well enough. the horn arrangement/harmonies are really lovely at times. both the sax and trumpet solos are enjoyable. that alto player sounds like someone who listened to a good amount of Hemphill. way cool. what throws me off of really liking this track is the rhythm section. that piano sound. ugh... also the guitar sound. bleh... anyway: Rava? though i haven't heard him much, the tone here made me think of him. peace out for now. tracks 12 thru end coming from me soon...

  13. a few first blind thoughts: Track 1 – meh. But something about the short piano solo reminded of maybe an undeveloped Tristano, though I wouldn’t think it’s actually him. There also sounds like there’s a nasty edit at the end of that solo… Track 2 – This A section reminds me of “A Train.” No guesses but killin’ old “school-ish” vibe that I’m thinking may not be so ‘old’. Beautiful feel and tone on both the clarinet and tenor. And that organ sound is heaven. So chill… Track 3 – 1st reaction to this is “Mingus Lite,” like someone trying to cop Blues And Roots. but I still kinda like it. But not too much… Track 4 – Thad arrangement? Definitely don’t know it. Cool little tune though. Track 5 – Wow. Amazing bari playing. Pepper Adams? Don’t know the tune. Track 6 – cute, cool, and fun! Somehow this reminded me of Carisi. Track 7 – obvious tune. Don’t know the band. is that bass and cello? Funky… Track 8 – Harrell? Track 10 – lovely! No guess. Track 11 – that pianist has the Jarrett singing/moaning/whining thing down, but his piano playing didn’t do too much for me. No guess… Thoughts on tracks 12 thru 16 at a later date!
  14. put me down as another self-checker. i use Hannaford mainly in my town. there are 2 and one is slightly better than the other (availability of products, service, produce, etc...). but they're both much better than the local Price Choppers. and i occasionally use the local co-op - but it's pretty expensive and regularly they don't carry everything i'm looking for so i can't get everything in one shot and that's a pain in the ass. a small pain, but a pain nonetheless...
  15. yeah dukecity. definitely a sweet cat. and if you met him a couple times @ NAU, if those times were between 1999 and 2001 you may have met me too if you were at his office in the school. good times... yeah, he was a buffalo boy. way cool you hung out with him back in the day checking out bassists. i wish i'd been there...

  18. thanks for the nice words Justin. one and the same. excellent player, excellent guy. and again thanks for the nice words JSngry. and you're right on a couple things here: he lived well. big time. and he also "led with his head." you writing that is a big tell that you indeed saw him play.
  19. maybe something like this: kjfgh kjfgh kjfgh ?????????
  20. It's been 6-7 months now, but I just heard that an old friend of mine passed away late last September: Joel DiBartolo. Since it's been a little while, I thought maybe an "RIP" thread wasn't the way to go? I dunno. But - I named a tune in tribute to Joel back in 2004. I was very fortunate to be able to work, play, and spend time with him from 1999-2001. We kept in touch a bit for a few years after I left Flagstaff, but I lost touch w/ him through the last few years. A great person and a great teacher/musician. Simply an amazing bass player in virtually any musical situation. He was also a hilarious storyteller and something of a philosopher; sharing his thoughts on marriage, the life of an artist, forgiveness, etc... Relentlessly pursuing his relationship w/ the bass in many contexts, that drive often rubbed off on his students. He'll be sorely missed by many. This is a little video tribute to the man using the tune I named after him in 2004. It's a generic iMovie photo collage thingie. I tried to use as many photos as I could find, but I do end up repeating them. There are also photos of the players on the track. What a pleasure it was spending time working/playing with him:
