  1. i've heard that buddy rich couldn't read so he had other drummers read through new material at rehearsals while he stood by and listened - immediately memorizing the pieces.
  2. I had not heard this, and it seems kind of unbelievable, given the complexity of Evans' charts. Where did you hear this? I could readily believe that he wasn't a fast reader at that point. yeah. there are gradations. some folks simply don't read at all, but can compose and or/play. some folks know how to read but aren't very proficient in certain situations. and on and on... simply knowing how to read, and being a good "sight reader," can be two very different things. maybe Lacy was a "so so" sight reader but was given time somehow to shed his part beforehand? dunno.
  3. yo NIS! check your PMs...

    Gary Burton?

i've been seeing this image in the windows of dry cleaners/tailor businesses for what feels like forever. and for the last couple decades every time i see it i wonder if other folks see it too. watch: just wonderin'...
  6. Veronica Mars: The Complete Second Season - $6.97 http://www.amazon.com/Veronica-Mars-Complete-Second-Season/dp/B000FL7CAK/ref=sr_1_10?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1337014235&sr=1-10 Veronica Mars: the Complete First Season - $22.99 http://www.amazon.com/Veronica-Mars-Complete-First-Season/dp/B000A59PMO/ref=pd_bxgy_mov_text_c Veronica Mars: The Complete Third Season - $11.83 http://www.amazon.com/Veronica-Mars-Complete-Third-Season/dp/B000NA2BEU/ref=pd_bxgy_mov_text_c thanks GA i went for the Complete Season 2 (new, not used!). total was less than less than $10 including shipping. very good deal. the others are good too but maybe i can eventually get 'em all for that low a price. thanks again. if i buy 'em all at this low price i'll eventually save money from not having to pay my late fines at the library
  7. sad news of course. great bassist. will play much MGs in the store today. RIP...
  8. halfway through this and am literally laughing-out-loud every page. fantastic. a much welcome respite from the last few years of my exclusive non-fiction/political journalism reading...
  9. genuinely glad to hear that you're enjoying the music Hot Ptah. that is, after all, one of the main purposes of these BFTs, right? not Larry Young. and embarrassingly, Unity is the only Young record i'm familiar with. i'll have to check out Double Exposure... for me, the coolest thing about these BFTs are the absent musicians that the present music brings to mind. and of course the opinions/judgements on the music which are unfiltered by preconceived/solidified attitudes associated and ingrained w/ certain names/bands. always interesting. more thoughts and speculation throughout the month is always welcome/encouraged
  10. of the five or so tracks on this BFT that i thought might be "gimmies," this was the one i figured at least a couple folks would likely know. but "1st to identify" points to you all-the-same! and i wasn't aware of the 3 For Jazz release. i got it on Sonny Meets Hawk as one of three bonus tracks i think. it's an amazing track to my ear. still so fresh. the musical energy still just flies off of this piece in waves. and the remastering job sounds excellent to me, though i don't really have experience w/ the original. i'm just assuming 'cuz it sounds so good/clean/clear. enjoy the rest of the BFT jeffcrom. looking forward to your thoughts...
  11. yep - i'm breaking my rule of not posting directly to anything generated by allen lowe... i blame jenny lawson. i agree completely that her blog is mind numbingly self-indulgent, tediously self-referential, and so high on the cutesie-clever meter that it's to the point of causing a mild stroke. fuckin' lazy ass, middle of the road, puerile lowest common denominator garbage. about the only positive thing i could muster to say about what she's done is that she's somewhat motivated. she's doing something. but i guess she's proven that that's not always a good thing? "Look how quirky and clever I can be everyone. Wasn't that last pun/observation funny and clever? I'm so un-serious, relaxed and hip w/ my clever cleverness and post-modern observations about the quirkiness of our topsy-turvy world. Aren't we all (especially me) so sophisticated and whimsical?! Oh... Buy my book." it shoulda been Lawson having this conversation w/ tyler durden instead of edward norton (after which durden could've invited her to his club). "How's that working out for you, Lawson?":
  12. When you make a record as good as "Warmth of the Sun" or "Let Him Run Wild," I'll be first in line to buy it. Promise. just to be sure you're understanding my post ('cuz it seems like maybe you don't): i have nothing against any member of the band personally, and i know that they are a great band and have written some excellent music. i just really can't stand listening to them. i normally don't post in threads to mention my dislike of something. probably shoulda passed on by. sorry...
  13. i always hated The Beach Boys' music. still do.
  14. and something kinda different from those two above (i guess you can't have more than 2 media files in one post?): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlS1qYrqzwA
  15. Sam Amidon is an artist i find very interesting. and definitely "non-jazz." when i was doing review writing his cds were sent to me but i didn't have time to write them up. too bad 'cuz they probably woulda yielded some decent ideas. i love a lot of his music and think his "concept" is often surprising, creative, original and subtly beautiful. the songs below are good examples of ones i feel this way about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iR1P6BIwOjs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhOQ0OKqdlE and yeah, i'm aware that some on this bard may find the versions of those tunes distasteful. i don't care. i think they're genius.
  16. ok! hoping people enjoy and put up lots of thoughts, guesses, and all that good stuff. also hoping others join in as the month goes by just shoot me a message and i'll send you the link...
  17. awesome! glad to have you guys. i hope it's fun - check your private messages...
  18. phew! awesome king ubu. this one was way over my head. my bft this month should comparatively be a breeze...
  19. if anyone sees the complete Veronica Mars series (all 3 seasons.) at a crazy markdown, send me a private message please. no, really...
  20. i'll go the route of suggesting someone who not many folks have heard of - Jeffrey Burr. as far as i know he only has two available recording: imo, both are excellent and easily worth owning. i found out about him through Pandora radio. i had some type of jazz guitar station going and some tune from Bright Blue came on and i said to myself, "I must get this record." sometimes following through on that kind of thing ends up being disappointing. not here man. excellent guitarist. this is Burr playing one of my favorite standards: enjoy!
  21. great! check your messages...
  22. i hope the music keeps you curious
