Still wondering --- what's the beef against "this cat"? Peter launched a one-man campaign against Jazz Loft here in 2009 when he didn't receive his order in a timely manner. No one agreed with his negative view of JL, and so he used the board to publicly call out the owner, who was/is also a board member. It was a sad and seemly affair, one that I would have hoped Peter had gotten over by now. Read it here

Impulse 50th Anniversary: 50 CD Box set

True dat. -
You conveniently ignore the fact that it is Fresh Sound's own distribution company, Absolute, that makes these titles available to U.S. retailers. That doesn't excuse retailers from their role in the process, but it doesn't make Jordi an innocent bystander either. As Jim said, if you're going to steal, then do it. Don't call it something else, or justify it by blaming it on someone else's actions or lack of action. We're talking about records here, not medicine or a loaf of bread. There's no ethical conundrum at play, just people's desire to obtain something that the owner doesn't wish to sell.

Imo, this reads more like a press release than a journalistic endeavor to inform and clarify. First off, let's establish the fact that the legal owners of copyrighted material are bad, greedy, or just ignorant people. Then let's spoon feed Pujol a series of softball questions ("So issuing these recordings isn't bootlegging?"), and never challenge or ask for clarification of his answers. How about something like, "So, if it's legal to sell these recordings in Spain and other parts to Europe, why do you sell them in the U.S. where they are protected by copyright?" Pujol cites the source of FS's releases are "a large warehouse of reel-to-reel tapes that we bought from many different record labels in the 1980s". When asked how he could have purchased these copyrighted titles, Pujol says, "I assume these recordings were not protected under the U.S. copyright law". Curiously , he seemingly contradicts himself by adding, "You should know that we never bought them." So, you assume they were legal to sell, and so you purchased them, but you never bought them. Pujol also asserts that "Many people believe that all labels coming from Andorra or Spain are related to FS. This is simply not true." So tell me then, what website advertises the Andorran labels' titles, as well as those from Fresh Sound? Answer: Blue Sounds, owned by Cristina Pujol Masdeu. And who distributes the physical product? Why, it's Absolute Distribution, whose parent company is Blue Moon Producciones Discograficas SL, a division of...drum roll, please...Fresh Sound Records. I'm not saying that some of Pujol's efforts aren't noteworthy. Specifically, I'm thinking of the new recordings released on the Fresh Sound New Talent label, many of which I enjoy very much. However, I'm not buying this guy's Robin Hood act, and the bias and obvious holes in this "article" only serve to reinforce my opinion of him.

Kind of ironic to see this title pop up on eMusic a day after this conversation started. The preview clips sound quite nice to these ears:

The coroner's official report concluded that Winehouse died of acute alcohol poisoning. With a blood alcohol level of .4% (more than five times the drunk driving limit in the U.K.) she literally drank herself to death.

Dammit Jim. I'm with you all the way, and then you go and get all Texas toast with the misogyny shit. Oh well, you know what they say:

I don't get it. Do you abstain from buying Dickens because his heirs don't get paid either? Both Dickens and Gryce are dead. How cold does the body have to be? The point is, even if you can't support the artist, why support the thief? sonnymax, do you understand the concepts of copyright and public domain? Real Gone are not thieves. These are works in the public domain in Europe, just like Charles Dickens' works. As Jim pointed out, the copyright is in effect in the U.S., which is where you live and where Real Gone sells some of its ill-gotten booty. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, happens when the E.U. adopts the extended copyright laws. My guess is nothing will change. Perhaps they'll move to Andorra!

The point is, even if you can't support the artist, why support the thief? Personally, I like the idea of stealing that which is not rightfully yours. Call it poetic justice. Like my man Omar says: All in the game, yo.

Sour Note: Boy's Sax Banned On School Bus
sonnymax replied to sonnymax's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I don't know exactly what that is, but I am nonetheless shocked and horrified, and I feel compelled to weep openly, for you, for your children, and your children's children. -
Maybe we should collect some money and buy him a gig bag. RAYNHAM, Mass. -- A Raynham 12-year-old boy has been banned from taking his saxophone on the school bus. Andrew DiMarzio loves to play his tenor sax at home and at school, but the bus company said the case for his saxophone is a safety hazard aboard a crowded school bus. His mother insisted it can easily fit under the bus seat, and is no bigger than many back packs or over-sized athletic bags that other students carry. The dispute comes as the school district is trying to rebuild the music program after years of budget cuts. You're kidding, right? Why get your tighty whities all in a bunch? We're talking about much-beloved comedies here, not religion or politics. As someone else pointed out, it's a matter of personal taste, not something you can prove or disprove. For you to label iconic comedians "goofy" based on your preference for a different form of humor is...er, how do I put this?...Ah yes, to elocute from within your gluteus maximus. Eloquent enough for ya?

Respectfully, you're talking out of your ass. You're posting my quote out of context. I saw it, I lived it, AND I have my own opinions. My original post was in response to the claim that 'I Love Lucy' may have been the best example of ensemble comedy ever. Keep the nastiness at bay, please. If you have a conflicting opinion, I'm ok with that. Just try to back it up a little more eloquently. I said "respectfully".
