  1. R.I.P. He played some things around 1970 that seemed incredibly fast, with a lighter sound and technique than traditional Cuban conga players. I was a little disappointed that he went so much for disco music, as he had a great potential for jazz with black consciousness. The Strata East double album was very impressive for its vision and the great band he assembled. I recommend McCoy Tyner's Asante album to hear what he could do in a modern jazz context.
  2. Couldn't sleep last night, so .....
  3. https://genuin.de/de/04_d.php?k=623 Excellent new release!
  4. This is a real good one, tzhe whole series is. Yesterday I played this one, another excellent reading:
  5. This one is more interesting than one might think. https://www.discogs.com/release/11559118-Various-Warren-Bernhardt-Jay-Anderson-Keith-Foley-Factory-Town Looks like was made as a promotional item by a local HiFi / Sound System company, it remained their only release. Sure sounds very good. Recorded by Tom Jung of DMP, but with the equipment referred to by the German company, with musicians associated with DMP at the time.
  6. I can't see such a film being made in the USA at that time.
  7. R.I.P. He was a pioneer for African-American actors, for sure. This is my favourite:
  8. Boland Plays Monk - why not? But i guess he was busy with his own stuff. As much as I appreciate Nelson - he was not the perfect choice for Monk. Thar was Hal Overton. Nelson did a good job, but simply was not monkish. Just about as monkish as Wynton Marsalis.
  9. I bought too many CDs, as always, but only few made a really memorable impression: Oliver Nelson - Nocturne (OJC/New Jazz) Paul Bryant - The Blues Message (Fresh Sound/Pacific Jazz) Maria Rivas & Liberjazz Trio - Pepiada Queen (Obeso Pacanins) Mark Whitfield - Live & Uncut (Chesky) Shirley Scott - One For Me (Strata East) Anselmo Sacasas Y Su Orquesta - 1942-1944 (Harlequin)
  10. Monk on MPS? No way.
  11. The original was b/w. That's a new fashion to colorize old b/w music clips.
  12. There was another aggregation founded after the Alegre All Stars, the Cesta All Stars, in which Charlie Palmieri also played: https://www.discogs.com/artist/1101421-The-Cesta-All-Stars. AFAIK there were six Alegre All Stars LPs. Five by the Cesta All Stars. The Alegre tapes are owned by Fania, which is now owned by Concord. Since Craft is part of the Concord Music Group, why not .... Send them a suggestive mail. Charly did a CD compilation of the Alegre All Stars many years ago, which is nice. Just saw that Fania reissued exactly that compilation!
  13. Making may way throught these twO, disc by disc:
  14. My wife and I shared a piccolo bottle of Freixenet brut at midnight, that was it. My morning coffee is from a local roaster, his own take on Italian style black espresso. Congrats!
  15. That is a collection I can heartily recommend.
  16. First listen in the new year:
  17. Have a listen to Carnaval, and Kreisleriana.
  18. Happy New Year to everybody, good health and good music!
  19. Schumann was adored by many French late 19th century composers, he introduced many ideas they liked, and he favored smaller forms just as the French, wo were not that much inclined with sonata forms and the like - so no wonder.
  20. Listened to this for the first time ever. although I have since I bought the big Herbie Box eight years ago. The sound? If this was direct-to-disk, they would have to take the loudest passage as reference level, and that was Tony Williams' drumming on Skagly. On Finger Painting all is back to normal, as Tony played at a much lower level on that track. Multi-track studio recording, different styles with varyying drum levels, and direct-to-disc - hard to gte these under one hat. The box has the A Side in two versions - so they played it safe. For the CD they used the alternative version.
