Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?
mikeweil replied to Cliff Englewood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
On our way back home after vacation, my wife and I listened through this one in the car on sunday (spent half of the ten hour drive in traffic jams on the highway - the set loosened us up considerably). -
Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low

IIRC I'm now the lucky owner ... -
Most jazz bassists prefer a 3/4 bass - few could handle a 4/4 sized instrument.
-
Like violins, double basses are built in different sizes - this is the size I have in mind (the slim girl is just there for contrast - no kidding). https://www.amromusic.com/bass-sizes

That's what I remember, too - I sold it because the music didn't thrill me that much.

Wasn't the 1967 recording made for release on VeeJay? At least the Japanese double LP which was the first issue appeared with the VeeJay logo and all.

Oh - a Superbass album I don't have! Me want!

What Classical Music Are You Listening To?
mikeweil replied to StarThrower's topic in Classical Discussion
At least it's done with taste and some Italianitá .... That said - Brilliant Classics has been consistently adding to period performances in recent years, including many "Complete Works" projects, including this one I'm listening to right now: http://www.brilliantclassics.com/articles/j/jm-bach-jc-bach-complete-organ-music/ Nice Thuringian organ, very well played. An overdue recording. The Italian keyboarders are the most interesting and active in recent years. Molardi's complete J.S. Bach Organ Music is also highly recommended. -
Arguably Tjader's most swinging album. Was finally on CD last year on the Britsh él / Cherry Red label, combined with Tjader's preceding Verve LP In A Latin Bag.

What Classical Music Are You Listening To?
mikeweil replied to StarThrower's topic in Classical Discussion
http://www.brilliantclassics.com/articles/e/erotica-antiqua-neapolitan-villanellas/ This is great. A singer that has as much experience in Neapolitan folkore as in Early Music and traditional theatre, and an ensemble that is keenly aware of the Spanish connection in the Naples music scene over the centuries. Finally a group that properly understand the intricate, Arabian inspired rhythms of this music and plays them in a relaxed, natural and grooving manner. The singer's use of vibrato and other embellishments is very defined and based on the sung texts - what else can ask for? -
The Lord Disco has only these two, with a note that the latter was reissued on Red Records. IIRC Higgins had a good relationship with the Italian label.

He's been touring with the same band for years, including pianist Rainer Brüninghaus and percussionist Trilok Gurtu - forgot who the bassist was two years ago when he played here. The best moments were when Garbarek and Gurtu were duetting; the remainder was a bit disappointing, sounding too much like Weather Report inspired fusion music, with the pianist spoiling the sound with heavy, bombastic chording. Garbarek needs sidemen who challenge him more and force him into new territory, like Miroslav Vitous did.

According to discogs there have been CD reissues in Japan and Germany, the latter is still available through discogs and amazon sellers, and from the label. No idea if it is legitimate. http://www.captain-high-records.com

Far out! Now here's an iconic space age record. Never heard of this. Hyman recorded a lot for MGM, but somehow I'm not surprised the Lord Disco does not list this one,

I heard "The Minotaur" from his first Moog LP back then on AFN Europe - it blew my mind. Never found the record over here though, only the follow-up LP. Got the CD a few years ago - he was a pioneer, and a totally unprejudiced mind. That he is the same man that is an enyclopedia of historic jazz piano styles is amazing.

LF: Cal Tjader - Fantasy 540 - As I Love You
mikeweil replied to mikeweil's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Hi Berthold, I have "I Waited So Long" and all the other tracks from the "Tjader Goes Latin" LP - what I am looking for is the other side of the single release, "As I Love You". -
I'm still looking for a copy of the Cal Tjader Fantasy 10" shellac disc # 540 or the 7" 45 rpm single # 540X with As I Love You c/w I Waited So Long - the only 1950's Tjader item still missing in my collection. I have been searching ebay, discogs, and the like for years, with no luck. At least one of the tunes was featured in th movie The Big Beat. The A side never was reissued by Fantasy in any form, while the B side was included in the LP Tjader Goes Latin and equivalents. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Absolutely right! It would be great if you could arrange to make a DVD copy - I'll gladly cover the costs. I just want to see it and verify the tunes and personnel of the Tjader performance for the updated second edition of the Tjader biography and discography due in two or three years.

I:m looking for a copy of the 1958 movie The Big Beat. Plenty of music in the film, as you can see. Please pm me if you have this film in any form.
