Nat Hentoff R.I.P.
mikeweil replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
The notes in my copies show me I was wrong - got the English paperback reprint in '86 and an used copy of the German edition in '88. IIRC I had borrowed it from the library before I got the English version. Like you I went right on to read Gitler's Swing to Bop, both are great examples of well done oral history jazz books. -

Same here, first the German edition, and later the original. I love his Candid productions. R.I.P. -
Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?

How many pages/photos are in the booklet? Is it worth getting just for the booklet? -
Jim, you're right, it was Piano Reflections that I had in mind.

The Frank Sinatra with Norvo, Tour de Force, pictured a few posts above, on Bravura. The Blue Note Issue can be found easily, got a rather cheap copy in December after it was mentioned in another thread. At the moment I will stick to the Blue Note issue and spend my money on other discs ... The Forward Look, otoh, can't be had cheaply, either: on amazon.de, one copy for 32,49 € plus shipping, all other copies for 100 or more. Two copies of the Bravura issue are for sale there, one for EUR 26,75 and one for EUR 378,82

Thanks for posting this issue - it seems to be out of print and goes for rather high prices.

What Classical Music Are You Listening To?
mikeweil replied to StarThrower's topic in Classical Discussion
In constant rotation during the last few days: One of the best harpsichord recordings in the past years, Orpheus Descending by Mark Edwards - since I took part in the crowdfunding I already have a copy. Go to his Kickstarter pages for more info. It is beautifully conceived and played ... https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/406456280/orpheus-descending -
... and I was wondering about the sound ...

Finally got around to listen to this new release which arrived here just before Christmas. Beautiful music, excellently performed. -
what are you drinking right now?

This evening's delight: a rare pure Marselan from Southern France: The Primitivo mentioned above was a little disappointing, tasty and full, but not as complex as I would have expected from a wine from that grape variety at € 10 a bottle. The Marselan at € 5 was a nice surprise, fresh and fruity, with a taste of cherries and smoky overtones. -

The accompanist for our Christmas dinners: -
Picked my copy of this CD reissue from the mailbox yesterday - it sounds excellent, is in good stereo (Tom Dowd engineering). I have faint memories of hearing tracks from it on AFN Europe back then - at least it is listed among my notes I kept to track down all the albums I liked. This could be her best album. As I said, Davis and Tate are fantastic. This is in constant rotation since my previous post reviving this thread. Sometimes it takes more than forty years to get am album you once heard and liked but never saw anywhere.

Some of Etta Jones' sessions with excellent sidemen were spread over several albums as Gene's, and would benefit from a reissue in session order just as well..

Simply great!

Thank you for your understanding! I was saved by a good friend working in some IT company, one of whose colleagues is a specialist for the type of notebook I have, he just returned it. All my data are saved, but I have to re-install most software, type in all the license keys etc. - but I think I can make it. My hard disk is not defective, must have been some mishap during the last update procedure. The old fridge is in the dump, the new one in the kitchen, we're out for the furniture parts tomorrow - all is well again.
-
The external burner works - next step is downloading the software I had licensed .... if I can get this to full function, I can make it. I need a day more or two.
-
Okay - if I can get my external burner to work with this tablet .... I'll check it out this evening and post here. That, btw, answers my questions about Thom's procedure .

I'm terribly sorry, but I have to cancel my February BFT. Last Friday our refrigerator went belly up - gladly the replacement was already waiting in the basement as we had planned some changes in the kitchen, but this meant spending Saturday with breaking down the old fridge/freezer and its housing, painting the wall behind it, and getting the new fridge up to 3rd floor. Transporting the old stuff to the dump is due tomorrow, buying and mounting some kitchen furniture will take the rest of the week. Even worse, my main computer got caught in a restart loop - a first diagnosis means getting a new hard drive or a new computer, luckily I have a recent backup, but getting a new machine and transferring all my datra and software licences is not exactly what I wanted to do during my days off after Christmas. I have the music slection almost done, but it will take some time before I can transfer the tracks to MP3 etc. As I said, very sorry, I will step back in line as soon as evrything is back up and running. I may have little time to check in here over the coming weeks, so happy holidays to everyone, besides these minor mishaps we're fine and looking forward to some quieter days. p.s. sending this from my tablet

After Koechlin, I played a lot of Séverac's piano music over the last two days - the Babier disc is my favourite, btw: Next, two harpsichord anthologies - the Maurer is one of the best of its kind in recent years. -

I do hope he makes a German tour as well, would love to see him play solo. The CD is announced for a February release over here.
