mikeweil replied to mikeweil's topic in Discography
Thanks - there are copies in like new condition available for € 5 plus shipping - will check this out after vacation. -
I compared more tracklistings: Empty Hearted, a vocal track featuring Earle Warren, ist the only item missing on the Savoy twofer LP. Can you live without it?

I remember I had the Capers and the Battiste for some time ... was underwhelmed by the Capers mostly for the sound (although I love her writing and piano playing), and I am not much a fan of Battiste's clarinet style, so I sold both on occasion. The Donaldson is new to me. Not sure about the Mabern ... If the Mabern disc is titled "The leading man" (can't read it on that small cover pic) it's a compilation of tracks from two DIW CDs. -
If I could travel in time I'd go right back to the Atlantic vaults the day before the great fire and beam it all up!
-
When I compare both in Lord - I have only the double CD, not Savoy SJL 2202 - the latter does not include Empty Hearted from the April 18, 1944 session. But that could be a mistake in the Lord disco. The CD also includes the Live session from the Argyle Club in Chicago, IL, recorded April 2, 1950.

I have two CDs from this Phil Schaap produced series: Doc Cheatham: The eighty-seven years of Doc Cheatham (1993) Milt Hinton: Laughing at life (1995) What else was released in this series? As far as I can see, Alvin Battiste's CD Late (1993) was part of it (I don't have that one any more):

How about this Savoy double CD:

Stopped by old friends in Lüneburg on our way to the North Eastern German coast and stepped into some antiquarian book and record shop before having dinner at a fine Persian restaurant - bought a German LP from 1975 reissuing some Mat Mathews tracks originally released on Brunswick 78's and EPs: Herbie Mann, Dick Katz, Percy Heath, Kenny Clarke, Max Wayne, Walter Bolden are the sidemen. AFAIK know this LP was a rare reissue - there was a British LP that did not include as many tracks. Someone should have made a CD with Mathews' comlete Brunswick tracks - there are only six more than on this LP. Will have to wail until I get back home in mid-August before I can give it a listen ...

You're lucky: I'm on vacation, but For Charlie and Benny is among the CDs I took with us for listening ... Jim Hall & Red Mitchell, Artists House LP from 1978, recorded live at Sweet Basil Red Mitchell is a monster!

Chico Hamilton Trio - Japanese LP reissue Liberty LLR-88039 Jim Hall or Howard Roberts guitar, George Duvivier bass, Chico Hamilton drums. They even vocalize on one track ... I always why Michael Cuscuna never did a proper reissue of this, especially since the 12 inch LP omitted some tracks from the original 10 inch issues. For the complete sessions one has to go the Andorran way. George Duvivier is great here, as always.

This information from a German fansite (no longer updated) seems to be correct, and it is indeed unissued on disc, although it must have been re-broadcast in 1990 - less than half an hour of music, btw. I find September release dates for this on a Japanese mini LP, -
Tiny Grimes, Callin' The Blues - Swingville/OJC LP reissue Hope this helps me overcome an almost sleepless night - too hot and damp - it's music of good spirit with inspired playing by all participants. Packing day, we'll be off tomorrow for three weeks in the North East of Germany.

Didin't mean to say he was a clone - quite the contary. Compared to other West Coast based pianists he was a bit overlooked, methinks ...
-
R.I.P. I bought the Affinity LP reissues of his Capitol LPs many years ago and liked them a lot, great Bud Powell inspired bebop piano.

Then there is this one: http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/chico-o-farrill-s-all-star-afro-cuban-orchestra/3655-fiebre-tropical.html or https://www.amazon.de/Fiebre-Tropical-Farrill-Chico-All-Star/dp/B0002UJNDS/ref=sr_1_2?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1469001554&sr=1-2&keywords=Fiebre+Tropical

Another four tracks by some Chico O'Farrill & his Cuban All Stars from 1957 were include in the 3 CD portrait of Peruchín - big band descargas. Peruchín was the best of all Cuban pianists of his genearion, IMO, so if that interests you, it's great fun. http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/peruchin-genio-del-tumbao-y-la-descarga-cubana/4055-el-marques-del-marfil-grabaciones-indispensables-1954-1965-3-cd-set-digipack-edition.html There must be some of his arrangments on this CD, but I don't own it and can't give you details.
-
Back to Chico O'Farrill: I located four tracks he arranged for a Cuban all star big band in 1959; they were reissued in 1991 on CD Palladium PCD-160 under title Tumbao Cubano - Cuban Big Band Sound (long out of print). 28 tracks in all, two complete LPs. O'Farrill's arrangements are not that much different from the others' - he adapted to the task. Maybe this is of interest only for a vintage Cuban music nut like me ... http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/cuban-big-band-sound/1647-tumbao-cubano.html The playing is excellent, perhaps not as varied as by their New York counterparts, but technically on the same level, and with the proper rhythmic feel which often was lacking in US bands, even when they had Cuban percussionists. If you want to hear what they could do, try to find it.

Yes, the Strictly Bebop compilation left off Carambola for some reason. I had that Moody/Wallington LP for some time - still, no combination of Blue Note and Capitol material, and the Moody tracks incomplete. There would have been enough playing time left on the Blakey/Moody CD - seems they simply never did think of these Gillespie sides. And those Gillespie live albums with Pozo are a discographical mess.
-
They probably couldn't think that way because of the Blue Note 10 inch LP combining the Moody sessions with Blakey's early Blue Notes .... Dizzy's Afro-Cuban tracks all in one place ... nice idea, but quite a number, if one includes all the many live tracks. And: if you listen how Chano Pozo developped durin his short tenure with the band, the distinction will be difficult, as he played even on the ballads during the last concerts recorded.

Found a copy of the Collectors Disk for € 1 plus shipping - didn't know this existed, so thanks for bringing this to my attention.
