Now an old LP of the Kilfenora Ceili Band on Transatlantic, 1974 - can't find a larger pic. Jigs, Reels & Hornpipes, and two ballads in between.
-
Budd Johnson even plays some baritone on this one! On the last track, he plays three solos, on baritone, tenor & soprano, in that order, The JPJ Quartet was an excellent band!

This has Lucy Reed singing on one track, andit complements the other Ventura LP I have.

Maybe that mint vinyl copy sounds better than that 15 year old transfer? -

Finally got me a copy of the OJC limited edition CD reissue (OJCCD-1777-2) of Lucy Reed's first Fantasy LP, The Singing Reed (Fantasy LP 3-212). Apart from confirming that this is an excellent album from a great, individual singer, listening raised some discographical questions. Let me start with the track list: 1 Inchworm 2 My Love Is A Wanderer 3 Because We're Kids 4 It's All Right With Me 5 There's A Bot Dat's Leavin' Soon For New York 6 It's A Lazy Afternoon 7 Flying Down To Rio 8 Little Girl Blue 9 Fools Fall In Love 10 Out Of This World 11 You May Not Love Me 12 My Time Of Day 13 No Moon At All 14 Tabby The Cat 15 Baltimore Oreole 16 Thats’ How I Love The Blues The discographical info on the CD (copied here from discogs) is as follows: Bass – Bob Carter (2) (tracks: 1-3, 5, 8-16), Johnny Frigo* (tracks: 4, 6, 7) Drums – Sol Gubin (tracks: 1-3, 5, 8-16) Guitar – Howard Collins (tracks: 1-3, 5, 8-16) Piano – Bill Evans (tracks: 1-3, 5, 8-16), Dick Marx (tracks: 4, 6, 7) Vocals – Lucy Reed Tracks 13 – 16 previously unissued bonus tracks Tracks 1-3, 5, 8-16 was recorded in NYC; August 13-15, 1955. Tracks 4, 6, 7 was recorded in Chicago; January 18, 1957. Listening to the CD reveals that on tracks 1-4, 6-8, & 12 Reed is accompanied by piano and bass only; the full quartet with piano, guitar, bass, and drums is heard only on tracks 5, 9-11 & 13-16. Now there was a Fantasy EP 4052 with tracks 1-3 & 10 released in 1955; discogs here does not mention Bill Evans at all, crediting only Marx and Frigo, which must not be correct. The Lord disco does not know of the EP and lists only the personnel with Evans for all of the tracks on the CD reissue, not listing Marx and Frigo. He cites Peter Larsen's Bill Evans Discography who supports the 1955 recording date with Evans. Does any of this board's members have Larsen's book to tell me what he excatly writes about this session? Does he know about the bonus tracks? When was it published? What makes me skeptical is that Howard Collins' acitivity in New York studios really started only in 1957, this Reed session would be his only earlier date. The second Reed album was recorded in two sessions in New York in January, 1957, im great proximity to the two 1957 Reed sessions, which would fit into the chronology of Evans' recording activities just as well; the Marx/Frigo duet reroded two LPs in Chicago in September and November, 1956, for Brunswick and Coral. Reed spent some time in Chicago and performed with them, according to the liner notes of the Fantasy LP. How does the release of Fantasy LP 3-212 in 1956 and the EP with one of the quartet tracks in 1955 fit a 1957 recoding date? My experiences while researching the Tjader discography taught me to never trust Lord or the credits on Fantasy CD reissues without confirmation from other sources. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How much do Naxos CDs cost where you live?
mikeweil replied to David Ayers's topic in Classical Discussion
There is one small local classical store selling them, but I haven't been there for a while - their prices always were one or two € higher than those of online stores. In Europe. Naxos now has a big competitor in Briliant Classics, but they, too, have raised their prices a bit. Could it be that manufacturing cost have increased? -

Notes from a Battered Grand went to my wish list. Got a copy of Raise up off me yesterday, looking forward to read it during my vacation starting in mid-July - it was on my list for so long. -
The European reissues contain all the tracks from the three Contemporary LP, or OJC CDs, respectively - just on two CDs. Problem is they are not legit outside of Europe due to differing copyright regulations.

Forgot to mention: I knew of his jazz capabilities from the two organ trio tracks with Tony Williams and Maceo Parker on one of his albums, but it was a real nice surprise when he did his low key solo piano CD - not as deep as others of its kind, but nice and sincere. Will play it later today. May his spirit rise like the title implies.

An amazon seller from France offered it for € 21 - it usually goes for at least double the price.

That was one of the three Cadet LPs he recorded in between - I wonder what type of contract Burrell had ... The Tender Gender (April & May,1966), reissued as Soulero on GRP, with bonus tracks from the Christmas LP; or as a 1-to-1 reissue on Passion Jazz (properly licensed) Have Yourself a Soulful Little Christmas, October 1966, on CD in the Verve LP style reissue series Ode To 52nd Street, September 1967, partly on the CD Soulero or complete in the Chessmates series These three are much easier to come by as CDs ... they're under the same roof now (Universal), but were not back in the day.

Who did you miss when they were alive
mikeweil replied to Chuck Nessa's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I had a free ticket for Frank Zappa's last concert in Frankfurt but couldn't go because I had a contract to accompany a dancer's workshop in Italy .... For some reason I did not go to hear Miles Davis in 1972 when he played in nearby Frankfurt. Once I went to a Frankfurt club to see Philly Joe Jones, but when I got there there was a note at the door he had cancelled due to health problem. It was not too long before he passed. Another club had Charles Mingus' band with George Adams, but the place was packed and we couldn't get in - we were a bit late due to some traffic congestion. People that I never got to see but would have liked to are Paul Bley, Ray Bryant, The Modern Jazz Quartet ... I really regret I never saw Christopher Hogwood conduct - he had been in Frankfurt but somehow I missed it. Too bad .... -

mikeweil replied to mjzee's topic in Discography
There's a photo of the label of the Japanese LP reissue ((JO8Y-1396) of Cadet LPS-637 in the booklet of the GRP 18102 CD reissue that shows exactly the sequence you listed ... Here are the track timings, in case that helps - of course I cannot guarantee that the title attributions on the CD are correct ... There She Goes 2:22 All The Things You Are 2:05 Brother Yusef 3:07 Yvonne 3:41 The Moody One (False Start); and The Moody One - merged into one track on the CD 3:26 -

Looking forward to see and hear these ladies perform tomorrow in the evening! -
Many of these albums are split between small group and orchestral settings, which weakens them a bit, IMO - maybe a producer's attitude? Guitar Forms would have been much more convincing with Gil Evans' arrangements on the whole album. That one side always leaves me wishing for more.
