  1. Spinning this right now .... it is special!
  2. FWIW, her'e a link to a list of the Universe label ..... It is possible to order from this site for $ 15.00 plus shipping.
  3. Maybe it's no longer available due to the recent sale of Fantasy - all the distribution deals with various European partners have been terminated. Amazon says the label of this reissue was "Universe, Italy" - whoever that is or was .....
  4. Here's the track list from amazon.com: Disc: 1 1. Monk's Mood (False Start) 2. Monk's Mood 3. Crepuscule With Nellie (Take 1) 4. Crepuscule With Nellie (Take 2) 5. 5. So you found the discs ...... The language is Czech - she is very well known in Czech folk circles! I appreciate your compliments on the sequencing - I spent many an hour on it! I see above that this track is from George Mraz' disc "Morava"... that one has been on my wishlist for a long time... will move it up further! It's one of the most beautiful folk-jazz albums ever made, believe me! Too bad it wasn't included in one of the recent Zweitausendeins Fantasy sales.
  6. R.I.P. One of the giants in a generation that formed our listening habits.
  7. Only exception: the German team, of course ..... I must admit that they're better than I had expected. I wonder how they'll do against Argentina on Friday. That could be a great game. I bet it will be - if the Argentinians decide to rely on their superb facilities instead of fouls.
  8. Only exception: the German team, of course .....
  9. The Lewis is a rare gem that ranks high on my wish list ..... I have half of the "Bebop" sessions - the French reissued them in session order with some bonus tracks on two CDs, but I got only one of them, and those who have them keep them, it seems. The sound is typical 1970's, a little dry and bland, but the music is nice. Jimmy Rowles' 1970's sessions for French CBS also deserve a reissue.
  10. I agree, but I counted ten LPs and one CD with previously unissued material. There is some commercialized stuff among it, covers of the pop hits of the day, with generic party vocals, typical early 60's stuff, that Michael Cuscuna wouldn't care for. I don't see Columbia doing this ..... What are the three you have? I like the ones with versions of pop hits - mainly R&B material, of course. I've got Stone Soul Soul Bag Hey! Let's party. Listening to all three last night was most enjoyable. Sonny Fortune's work is particularly funky. You're right about Cuscuna's views - he doesn't like commercial trash. So we'll have to wait until the material becomes out of copyright in Europe to see its reissue. MG The three you have are among the best - especially the "Soul" albums are really cooking. I recommend you get the CD Afro-American Latin which released hitherto unissued live and studio material. Fortune was in the band at the time, and blows some good solos. It can be had at mid price in the Legacy series. The Greatest Hits on Columbia is a good selection - but make sure you get the issue with bonus tracks. I really wonder why Collectables didn't go for the Columbia Mongos - they did all the Atlantics.

  12. This remark is much better fitting than you might think!

  14. That bass player also appears on track #5 and also on my previous BFT # 18.
  15. Well .... I would have been disappointed, if I had fooled you ....
  16. Good! The bass clarintettist has been identified in the meantime - you were not the only one to guess Sclavis. Not the same bassist. It is! Maybe this drummer inspired Drake? He was there before him. Funny that several of you thought that it was too clearly Wheeler to be him ...... Some late 1960's extremely polarized stereo, it seems .... Thanks for your very interesting comments - excellent read for me!
  17. Teddy Charles Discography by Noal Cohen - highly recommended!
  18. I have this as a Koch issue purchased from Dusty Groove about fivr years ago,so it is doubtless OOP by now. Don't hasve the disc to hand (under a pile of discs) to check for any additional material. I, too have that Koch CD - it reissues the LP as it was, no bonus material. But I have an alternate take of Lanyop on a Columbia sampler LP, and the Xmas tune Pony contributed to the Jingle Bell Jazz LP also was recorded at these sessions - would be nice to have it all in one place.
  19. This may be the greatest tentet album in jazz history! Seriously, I second felser's statement. I've been collecting Charles' sessions ever since I got this one, but none of them surpasses it. This was an awesome group of musicians turning in a series of remarkable sessions bordering on Third Stream: Teddy Charles, George Russell, Art Farmer, Hal McKusick, Barry Galbraith etc. The CD reissue got a rave review back then in Jazz Podium.
  20. Got this one today and can't believe we overlooked it: Two superb rhythm sections: Joe Zawinul/Sam Jones/Louis Hayes or Wynton Kelly/Paul Chambers/Philly Joe Jones, and a beautiful muted rendition of Love Letters ranking among the prettiest trumpet ballads I have heard!
  21. I'm by no means a soccer expert, watching only during world championships, but the German team won my admiration, as they developped into a real team during the previous games. I see much less coordination in the Argentinian team, although they turn in some beautiful goals ..... like the one just scored. Buit only during prolongation! Poor Mexicans!
  22. You don't have to ask me ......
  23. Hate to see the scattered release pattern of the Monk Prestige session perpetuated: These sessions cry out for completion. The original LPs are short, and none has a complete session. I stick to the Monk box - and even there they didn't manage to establish recording order .....
  24. I used WebSpider with good results, but others work nicely, too. But I recommend creating a file to download the whole stuff to before you start the crawler.
  25. Earlier this year, the Kurdish singer I work for wanted to try and add a violin player to the band. After many phone calls her musical director had located the guy they wanted, and talked him into joining - he was travelling between Australia, where he risides, Turkey, and Germany all the time. They bought him a plane ticket to Spain where the gig was, and he was to join us on Frankfurt airport. When we arrived in Madrid part of his baggage was missing. We lost an hour and a half at Madrid airport before he gave up, and another hour the next day because he wanted to check if it had arrived in the meantime. (Back in Frankfurt it turned out that had simply forgotten to check in his main bag in Frankfurt.) At least he had his violin .... Now this guy was extremely talented, being able to play twenty different instruments, but also extremely unrestful, not to say hyperactive, always tapping his foot etc. After soundcheck and before the gig we went backstage to eat, and he talked without end, chased around the dressing rooms, downing five beers within 40 minutes before the concert was to begin. Best was, when the band was to walk on stage it turned out he had forgot to bring his violin from the dressing rooms downstairs and had to sit out the first number in which he was to be the main accompanist ..... The band agent cancelled his tickets to the locations of then other gigs and fired him after the concert. He kept calling our musical director for reasons why he was fired ..... We recently met him at a festival where he was playing with another band, and he acted like nothing had happened.
