  1. Indeed - Original Jazz Classics OJCCD-367-2 amazon.com link
  2. My thoughts exactly
  3. Wasn't there an interview where Van Gelder admitted he reserved that "special sound" for Blue Note? There was a discussion about this somewhere here - a search for Van Gelder should turn this up. I found his use of reverb pretty phony - well in Hackensack in his parents' living room the acoustics were probably less than great.
  4. They split up the frequency range.
  5. That last sentence is not correct: These sessions originally had been on 10" LP (partly on 78's) and, due to playing time restrictions, were mixed up for the 12" LPs, which thus were the first reissues. Cover art was changed, too. On an average, three 10" LPs were used for two 12" LPs; in some cases, previously unissued alternates or tracks were added. In cases were there was not enough material for two LPs, tracks were left off (e.g. Lou Donaldson, Horace Silver Trios). This applies to the Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Jay Jay Johnson, Clifford Brown, Tadd Dameron, Art Blakey Birdland, and Milt Jackson sessions. For the first US CD issues Michael Cuscuna completed the sessions and put the tracks in recording order, but used the cover art of the 12" LPs. The RVGs also have the complete sessions in recording order but ise the 10" LP cover art and, of course, are newly remastered by RVG. There were Japanese issues replicating the 12" LP order, putting the remaining material on additional CDs.
  6. Thanks, Jack - I could have thought of Ed Michel ..... David Wild assumes in his CD liner notes that the Van Gelder studios might have been occupied that day - Coltrane was pretty spontaneous with studio trips.
  7. I wouldn't see much sense in re-channelling a recording conceived for stereo reproduction (no to mention mono sources), as the recording setup would have been different with that in mind. But with original quadraphonic or newly recorded multi-channel material, why not. On the whole, I care less for multi-channel sound than for high resolution, which I think is much more important. And yes, we have only two ears, but they hear in all directions!
  8. I have many Fantasy box sets, and I think this is one of the best jobs they have done. But I never would have got me this, because of the price ..... but then Zweitausendeins had a bargain on Fantasy box sets many years ago ....... and it was the LP-sized boxes, not the cheapos, which were an assault to Fantasy's great efforts. I think Chuck is right with his assumption, and I also think there will be some repackaging in smaller doses, which is not a bad thing, IMHO.
  9. My sincere condolences, and all the best for you and your family.
  10. The Jackie Mac will never bite me, but I think this is some of the nicest playing he's done on record.
  11. FWIW, this was one of many posthumous releases. Expression was issued immediately after his death, with his consent, and it was his fifteenth LP, not counting multi-artist album of any kind. 17 posthumous releases were to follow (in the LP era, CD only releases not counted), Sun Ship being # 7 in that series. Does anyone here remember which year it was released and who did produce the LP? Was that Michael Cuscuna already? The CD doesn't mention this.
  12. Dan, you can open your signup thread rightaway - frankly said, if I could receive your BFT before I go on vacation on August 4, I could/would take it with me .....
  13. That's what I keep saying all the time .....
  14. Do purchases from the Zweitausendeins sales count here?
  15. I tried to remember: I think the highest price so far was some € 40 for a Japanese reissue of a rare Tamba 4 on A&M - there is a handful for which I'd be willing to pay that much, only a smal handful. Otherwise, € 20 is the limit, less is preferred.
  16. A Monkian beer should have an undefineable, herb taste and be labelled "Misterioso" ...
  17. Pretty body - ugly soul .....
  18. Yes - but that's one of the things you must be prepared for as a blindfold test master. We all suffered this - but at the same time I got positive reactions on tracks that I thought everybody would !
  19. I got a feeling that it will be like Xmas for many of you during the next days .....
  20. Maybe you should learn to play some of 'em .....
  21. p.s. I'm afraid it's wishful thinking to hope for a CD of the complete Reverend King session - the last to still wait for a proper CD reissue among the Impulse studio dates ......
  22. Funny - I was digging out some '65 and '66 Trane yesterday and thought about his last years and what he was up to. He's about the only one that sounds credible to me as far as shrieking saxes are concerned. He was a great spirit.
  23. Oh - I bought this very cheap on ebay two years ago but sold it again after a while - didn't get me. At least my tastes seem to be somewhat consistent .....
  24. That may be right for the Prestige sessions RVG engineered, but it would seem questionable if he remastered Contemporary or Riverside sessions that were engineered by colleagues with a quit different sound philosophy. Kirk Felton and others did an excellent job on these.
