  1. Thinking about this music once again, I can't help but think how great it would be if Concord would collect all of Charles' Prestige sessions into one box set - or maybe Mosaic all of his leader sessions. But this will remain a dream.
  2. Who'd ever get as crazy an idea as putting salt on a watermelon!?!? I imagine this to taste as ugly as sugar on popcorn (which I hate!).
  3. - must have been a giant waste basket! That aside, there was a drummer in Emil Richards' Microtonal Blues Band named Mark Stevens - I can't remember any "Chuck" Stevens on the California scene.

    Jon Gordon

I have that one - it's indeed very nice, and exceptionally well recorded.
  5. I'll take a copy of Limbo Carnival for $ 3 plus postage from one of you - it's one of the titles not offered over here.
  6. Just received this shocking news from a friend - words fail me. I wrote a review of his debut CD last year and still can't believe it - he was a stunning talent.
  7. It is a cool, and a unique record - there were some solo tracks on other Roach LPs, but not another whole solo drumming album, IIRC. I saw him do two of these live around that time - he really was into it. Baystate also did a live album of Max' percussion ensemble M'Boom, recorded live at a Netherlands festival - a CD reissue would give opportunity to release the complete performance. The tro issued tracks are a beauty! That Baystate label released some good stuff - I have an LP of a Charles Tolliver Quartet with Nathan Page that is nice. Marion Brown did LPs on that label, too ..... Someone mentioned an East World LP from Japan - that was another label that issued some gems. Same goes for Denon - some was on CD, but the majority still awaits a reissue, if only outside of Japan. I have a Reggie Workman solo bass LP on Denon (he also worked as a A & R man for that label) that is stunning!
  8. I think the point is not far where we will face similar safety regulations on international train rides - I saw increased security forces today on my ride back from Paris, and really wonder when terrorists will turn to trains after security on planes gets harder to override ... This hassle about musicial instruments is ridiculous, unrealistic, and really shows how unprepared they are for these things!
  9. Just saw the Monk Prestige 3 CD box is listed at € 5,99! # 500017 .......
  10. Oh yeah - my favourite B-3 player currently residing in jazz heaven. The King of the organ ballad!
  11. Oregon - Out of the Woods Anthony Ortega - New Dance
  12. Hah! I almost bought this one in Istanbul because I thought it would be a great blindfold test item!
  13. Very much looking forward to these!
  14. I never understood why Cuscuna didn't include all four tracks from that Young Men From Memphis LP as a bonus on the Booker Little - there was enough playing time left on the CD and there is no other complementary material in the EMI vaults. Just because Littlle doesn't play on them .... Well, there is a Roy Haynes quartet session on Pacific Jazz with Strozier, but the Newborn feature would sound strange in that context.
  15. That Frank Wess CD is a gem! The Timmons Prestige Trios, OTOH, are not so thrilling ....
  16. With all understanding for tight budgets of test masters - I think sending hard copies should remain an option for those who are on a slow connection or prefer a regular burned disc.
  17. IIRC Star Eyes from the Young Men From Memphis LP was a feature for alto saxist Frank Strozier. You will find details on that session in the Frank Strozier Discography.
  18. I've seen her live on several occasions as a sidewoman as well as with her own bands, and it was always great. She has a style of her own and didn't make any compromises - no ugly commercial record in her discography! My hat is off!
  19. He's tellin' the truth! Some nice nuts nuts to crack, some weird stuff, some of the type that makes you kick your ..... for not recognizing the players instantly ..... that said: Dan: the discs arrived here today. Thanks for prompt service. I will have an internet connection and a hi-fi at my disposal in the house where we stay from the 14th, so everything will be fine. Been listening to disc one this afternoon, a real fun compilation, I nailed one track so far.
  20. And what will you do after spending all your wages on the CDs ......
  21. I've seen but not heard them, but wouldn't buy any of them - partly mono and from the shellac era - they must have chased these tracks through some weird sound processing software to get multichannel.

  23. Jim, you better deactivate that function for the political forum ......
