  1. I'm spinning that Zawinul disc right now, the Rhino edition that also includes his rare Vortex LP. Any track from the Third Stream disc would have stumped us! For sure! I hear the sax on BT track # 9 almost as an alto, not tenor as the liner notes state. But the next tracks reveal he has a very high sound on the horn at times.
  2. So what's still left unsolved? # 2, 8, 11, 15?
  3. Now, although the artists' list is hard to resists, that cover is a secure way of keeping me from buying this album. Can I have a burn with neutral packing?
  4. Hah! I was four minutes faster! Wicked choice indeed! Congratulations rockyboy!
  5. I got it! Shame on us!!!! The only excuse is that it's one of his least known albums ..... click here
  6. So you're finally having mercy with us ...
  7. ... or this album:
  8. Maybe it's from this album: Wouldn't be the first time we've been had by one of his albums.
  9. Sorry if I disappointed you ... I will test your knowledge of Austrian musicians when it's my turn ... . So far I only bought and/or listened to the MPS with Pettiford - I just can't afford to buy all of this stuff right now. At least I recognized Benny Bailey right away. I will check this one out as soon as funds allow. That Michael Gregory (Jackson) - I never had a chance to hear a single track of his. Now, how's the rest of this album? B)
  10. Now that I got copies for Big Al and myself I could listen to this, at last. The music is beautiful, the compositions, and the way they play them. ***** But the sound ... almost like an electric piano in the beginning. George Mraz, one the most gorgeous sounding bassmen in the country, recorded with a pickup?! Listen to his Milestone CDs for a sample of how he really sounds. And the drums - as always, too far in the background, afraid of Elvin's thunderous sound. The brushes are lost in the mix at times. I've heard Elvin live and I know that's not how he sounds like. But the musicianship is first class, without a doubt. A worthy choice for Album of the week!
  11. I'm listening to track 2 right now ... it's not Redman, Maupin, Henderson, Jordan, Sanders .... is it Chico Freeman? .... I do not hear an electric piano, BTW, and who sings along like he does? Not Walton or Hancock - I give up .... So it's a male singer on # 6 ... I like this track, how's the rest of this album. How about another clue: Is he black or white? # 9: who's the leader? These cats sound familiar, but .... # 11 - could this be one of the Koller-led ensembles? Who did buy the recent MPS reissues? You've rocked us all!!!
  12. I'm currently wrecking my brains over track 2 - I know this tenor player, would guess a mid to late 1970's recording. It's not Dewey Redman, I'm sure. Traces of Getz and Coltrane. Wish Jim Sangrey could find the time to comment on this one - did he get a disc? I programmed only the six tracks not guessed: 2,6,8,9,11,15. Hmm ... I'd say # 6 is not Cassandra Wilson - the voice here is a littler higher in its basic timbre. Even on her first German issued albums she sounded somewhat darker. # 8 ????? # 9 I understand why many associate McCoy Tyner, but this is too loose for his band. I'd say it's not Tolliver. And not Bartz. Perhaps some German or Austrian band? Tyner was a huge influence in Europe in the 1970's, after Sahara.
  13. I've been looking at my collection for a half hour with track 9 on repeat. You are killing me. p.s. That you mentioned it doesn't necessarily mean you have it in your collection ...
  14. Chuck, you happen to know the reason?
  15. More pianists: Aki Takase Junko Onishi
  16. Christine Jensen, Ingrid's sister, alto saxist and fine composer. Jane Bunnett - soprano saxist and organizer of great encounters with Cuban musicians Jane Ira Bloom - the most beautiful soprano sax sound I have ever heard! Website
  17. Now that I've got the Jerome Harris disc I know why I did kind of like the electic bass sound on this: He uses a special model with a pickup and a mic inside the body. Great!
  18. BT 08 (Disc One - Track One) Jerome Harris - Hidden In Plain View - got that one from by trade from a fellow member - very nice! That Harry Allen Getz tribute is hard to find ....
  19. Among jazz albums, Frank Foster "Here and Now", on Catalyst, from 1976. Good players (Richard Williams, Harold Mabern, Freddie Waits, Artie Webb, Roland Prince, David Lee, and an inaudible Azzedin Weston) play uninspired over tepid disco beats. Avoid it!
  20. Yes it was, like LPs by Sonny Stitt. Don Schlitten bought his productions for reissue on Muse, the rest belongs to Buddah, which reissued some Norman Connors LPs on CD (Herbie Hancock and others participating).
  21. He played on one of the Milt Jackson Savoy session with Lucky Thompson. Fine pianist, don't know about the causes of his early death.
  22. Zweitausendeins has a batch of Fantasy SACDs for sale. Does anybody of you know if they are German or US manufactured, or even compared them?
  23. I have only one: I asked Cedar Walton to sign the first Eastern Rebellion LP which I bought at the group's gig. He happens to be the jazzman I saw the most often, four times I think.
  24. Daydream, Lovin' Spoonful Summer In The City, dtto Psychotic Reaction, Count Five a Turtles single I remember for the absolutely crazy flip side, Umbassa The Dragon Come On Up, Rascals
  25. Jailhouse Hips Bailey here - what are Hips doin' in da jailhouse?
