The Necks - Unfold [Ideologic Organ] new label, same magnificence

I was at the gig. It was a pretty astonishing evening's music so I'm very pleased to see this is on the horizon

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Peel's collection didn't stay in the family. His son's on Radio 6 following in the parental footsteps the last I heard young Ms.Gustafsson's going to have a some interesting decisions to make when she's a fair bit older as I can't see Mats relinquishing any of that vinyl whilst he still has his wits about him

‘Celebrate Ornette’ Review: Live Performances, Timeless Influence
mjazzg replied to mjzee's topic in New Releases
A sumptuous set by the looks of things. I might well be interested but there's precious little info on the Ornette website that I can find - no line ups, neither for the Ornette concert nor the Memorial concert. there's more info about the artwork than the music. If I'm going to spend $100 plus $30 postage to UK I want to know more first. Someone tell me I'm just not looking in the correct place on the site.... Now found the line ups for the tracks http://www.ornettecoleman.com/tracklisting/ risks being less than the sum of its parts I suspect but still a nice item for the superfan/collector -
What live music are you going to see tonight?

That sounds like a fantastic evening. The string players have recorded together https://www.discogs.com/Mazz-Swift-Tomeka-Reid-Silvia-Bolognesi-Hear-In-Now/release/4253317 I've not heard it but keep meaning to buy a copy. Roscoe Mitchell's bringing the current line up of AEOC to Cafe Oto this week -

Ornette Coleman - Town Hall, 1962 [ESP/Fontana] Ornette Coleman - Crisis [Impulse] Ornette Coleman - The Unprecedented Music Of [Passport] Ornette Coleman - New York Is Now [Blue Note] Ornette Coleman - Love Call [Blue Note] somewhat of a binge today. Such uplifting music

Sad indeed. His rhythms were so essential to the Can sound

thanks. I did go and read the website details of the subscription. Intakt releases are generally more expensive in the UK anyway, maybe £14/15 (probably for the reasons you describe) but the subscription is equivalent of £20 per disc (I assume with postage on top) which is asking a lot. I realise the sponsor angle is attractive and if I had a stronger connection to the label i might consider it. nOW, If ECM did a subscription I'd find that hard to ignore

Yep, that's the Him I hear in my head edit to add: now listening to the album and it's standing up well, Thankfully not too much Dub (which I feel never convinces outside it's natural home, where it convinces completely). Sounds a bit like an expanded precursor to Chicago Underground Duo when RM's playing. Not post-rock in the slightest but fun nonetheless. Maybe for Big Beat's benefit I could create the sub-genre of post-Dub non-post rock

Isotope 217 get a from me too. There's a Him album "Sworn Eyes" that also tangentially touches this scene, in my head anyway. In reality and when I listen to it again it'll probably have no connection whatsoever Scotland's Mogwai, are worth a listen. Their album "Les Revenants" comes highly recommended. Also,Flying Saucer Attack I hear what Guy's saying. Many of these albums (not the GYBE or the Mogwai above) are buried under piles of other unlistened to CDs in a cupboard. This thread may just get me digging them out

Crump, Laubrock, Smythe - nice line up, enticing does the Intakt subscription mean you're guaranteed to get sent the new releases or is it back catalogue too? Sorry, I should just go and read their website...

a scene/genre I touched base with but never wholly embraced for no real reason. Haven't really listened to much recently but when I do I enjoy it I can't top Clifford's list but will give my votes for Tortoise, Godpeed (most definitely, every album's worth your time), Aerial M (I like it more than CA does), Sea & Cake recently I heard the new Radian album which is well worth a visit. as for Bjork, well she's just a mighty talent and is her own sub-genre (but not a lot to do with post-rock), truly sui generis. I bought everything in her first few years but I've been less attentive in the last decade or so. If you've not heard Vespertine I urge you to do so as soon as humanly possible. Sigur Ros, initial impact was greater for me than any lasting interest which explains why I've three albums I've not listened to for a long while. Maybe this will be my prompt to reinvestigate

Nice list there, Steve. I missed more live music than I saw this year including very frustratingly Smith/Taborn/Maneri. Consolation in the shape of tremendous gigs from The Chicago Underground Duo w. Alex Hawkins Wayne Shorter Quartet Les Diaboliques Otomo Yoshihide and Evan Parker Tomeka Reid/Mike Reed w. Alex Hawkins (again) Nicole Mitchell solo and duo with Mark Sanders

Last art exhibition you visited?
mjazzg replied to mikeweil's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Another visit, on a very busy final day, to Abstract Expressionism at the RA in London. As on the previous visit, Pollock and Smith stand out and Newman provides a counterpoint to so much of the other art on display. Mitchell and Francis once again demanded attention. Great to have had such a multi-artist review of so many "big names" in close proximity. It demanded a lot of attention and concentration but by and large paid dividends.
