Last art exhibition you visited?
mjazzg replied to mikeweil's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Well worth a visit. I thought it was curated a little as a battle of the giants with each artist given their own space. Painting-wise the Newmans and Klines stood out but for me the Pollock room had the most impact although the Smith sculptures that ran through the galleries really came into their own and were a delightful commentary on what was hung on the walls. Much has been written about the Still gallery which left me a bit cold - I think a return is required. I also liked that there were names to discover amongst the heavy-hitters- Joan Mitchell, Sam Francis and Aaron Siskind - but that probably says more about my ignorance than anything else. Next up for me is Rauschenberg at Tate M. Very much looking forward to that one -
I'd vote for this one too. 1988 with Dave Burrell, Fred Hopkins and Ralph Peterson. As I hear it it gets to the essence of what Murray was (is) about - he plays these tunes as if they really mean something to him. Smoother than the earlier "scrappiness" but no less involving, I think and I definitely agree about those Human Arts Ensemble records, Leeway

I've heard at least one Ornette/Dead concert recording. It worked.
-
David Murray - The London Concert [Cadillac] Murray was one of my entry points into Jazz so I have a soft spot for his music. Revisiting this after a long while I hear why it made an impact on me but also why I tired of his prodigious output.

and played The Dead
-
Wayne Shorter - Odyssey of Iska [Blue Note] at the moment my favourite Shorter
-
Jimmy Giuffre - Piece For Clarinet And String Orchestra/Mobiles [Verve] continuing my Giuffre phase. More enthralling music
-
Which would you recommend? I've left Murray behind a bit but find the idea of a solo set quite intriguing. I see that Conceptual Saxophone is a Cadillac release which might make it more readily available here
-
Jimmy Giuffre - The Jimmy Giuffre Clarinet [Atlantic] new arrival, purchased largely off the back of positive comments on this board. What a tremendous listen, so many facets to the playing and arrangements. I'll admit that the foot-tapping threw me on first listen (sounded more like a pressing fault )

Tons of them... https://www.discogs.com/label/392872-Sinner-Lady-Gloria I ordered the Tyler before realising the provenance. Good enough listen but don't expect top notch sound

Interested to know your views as I'm on the fence with this one. How does interplay with "the locals" work? Brief samples I heard suggested to my ears that it wasn't great I think that sums up my thoughts on that LP perfectly. A really enjoyable listen which I need to get out again

What a fascinating premise for the BFT. So many new names and a few known from other contexts (Joos, Balance) to go and discover further. Thanks Clifford

Thanks for the report. I'm glad it was a good show and will keep an eye out for the recording. I don't think I've heard Bopp so will follow your recommendation -
Interesting, to have been at the concert would've been great. On first acquaintance I find the studio date the strongest and I'm pleased to have got hold of both as alternatives to the ECM (which I do enjoy but now seems less consistent in comparison)

Charlie Mingus - Jazz Composers Workshop [Realm Jazz]
-
Just listened. Great concert, thanks
-
Dave Holland - Life Cycle [ECM]
-
Oh no, not another great musician leaving us. Such an important voice silenced. RIP
-
Robinson, Roy, Vasconcelos - Kundalini [IAI]
-
Henry Grimes Trio - The Call [ESP] some very good playing by Perry Robinson on this one

If you speak to her on Monday please tell her that a London fan very much enjoyed and appreciated her recent appearance. Enjoy the gig -

It was great. I saw the Rogue Art notice about the upcoming concert with Maneri and the others - seems like a very interesting concert indeed. I wish Paris were a bit nearer! I'm interested in your comments about her level of recognition. For some reason I'd always imagined she had a high profile in France and it's a shame to hear not. Might this be due to her time spent teaching/playing in the US? I'm surprised, and frustrated, how little she seems to come to the UK. She was due to play a duet with Nicole Mitchell this year but cancelled. -
Jimmy Giuffre 4 - Dragonfly (Soul Note) one of today's arrivals. I'd held off for no other reason that there always seemed to be other Giuffre to investigate but this one I like a lot on first listen. Shouldn't be a surprise that Giuffre should make a group recording where his voice transcends instrumentation that in other hands was less successful. It's so Giuffre

I'm not sure if this is old news (it's definitely not fake news) but The Westbrook Blake is being performed at Kings Place 17th March. Just bought my ticket - will be my first exposure (not even heard the recordings)
