what are you drinking right now?
alocispepraluger102 replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
you spoiled my morning. cant get it here no more. We just got it here. Maybe it moved? hope you got their expedition stout? beautiful russian imperial stout. thick and black as used motor oil. improves your hearing, too. makes all the music sound better. My ears need all the help they can get. I'll let you know if I find it, thanks for the rec! I recently had the opportunity to pick up two bottles of Bell's Expedition Stout. I'd tried this micro brew a year or so ago without writing up an "official" beer review so I thought what better time than the holiday season to give myself a little gift and try it out again. Yes, it is definitely a gift to be had (or given out) for the beer lover in you or your loved ones. This Russian Imperial Stout style microbrew is brewed annually during the late fall months by the former Kalamazoo Brewing Company (newly named Bell's Brewery, Inc.) A winter brew, this one definitely will warm your bones on a cold and blustery winter's evening. Pouring my first of the two 12 ounce bottles into a 16 ounce pub glass I am awed by the overall blackness of this stout. No light, and I mean none, passes through this beer when held up to the light. Pitch as night I would describe it. And thick to boot. Almost seemed like pouring a bottle of motor oil into my glass. It definitely did not give off the appearance of "light, crisp and refreshing" which would classify it as a classy anti-macro brew right off the bat. I like it already! The limited, if almost non-existent head, lasted seconds at best. But the head of this beer is not really what it's about anyway. Taste is it with Bell's Expedition Stout. The first sip I experienced an exquisite creaminess not often found in my experiences with Imperial Stouts. Many times the burnt flavor of alcohol sting overwhelm a lot of the the total creamy smoothness a good RIS can offer. And offer Bell's did. The taste was of toasted malts and chocolate. I even detected a flavor reminding me of dates embedded in the flow as it passed over my palate. The aroma matched the flavors almost to a "T". No off-flavors or smells to speak of and I just got the sense that I was definitely drinking one of the best of the best maybe in the world of the Russian Imperial Stout style. Definitely seems to be a well-crafted and cared for steed in the Bell's Brewery stable of solid offerings. I very, very much enjoyed this one and will certainly enjoy the other of the two I'd purchased very soon. One downside to Bell's Expedition Stout is the overall alcohol content which is listed somewhere in the 11% abv range which is strong even by Imperial stout standards. It is simply so darned drinkable, it would be easy to down several at a sitting without thinking much about it until it was possibly too late to avoid the effects of too much imbibing. You definitely should try this microbrew if you like dark beers and stouts in particular. I would recommend that you sip responsibly finishing with just one per session. Take the time to enjoy this masterpiece of a creation and it will be one you'll look forward to coming back to each and every winter. I'm giving Bell's Expedition Stout a 9.50 for the style which is in my book, the closest I've come to the perfect Russian Imperial Stout. Winter Cheers to you! P.S. The thought of a bald Kenny G with one of Pat Metheny's guitars stuck somewhere(preferrably a cheap guitar)is an amusing one. and most tender. -
mulligan(after baths and a trip to the barber) and/or torme hosted FAR too many pbs or npr jazz events; i came to dislike seeing them so much i would turn the programs off. (ramses lewis bristles the hair, as well) i enjoyed their performances(excepting ramses, of course), but found them personally obnoxious.

anyone who fronts a band with no piano or vocalists is fine in my book. agreed, mully-desmond is wonderful i believe mull-brubeck did a beautiful spirietedduo version of take 5. the harmony stuff he and, especially, brookemeyer, and the other west coasters of that day had going on was especially beautiful and unique. i'll try to find that article. thinking it's in periodicals. i think of him as a composer and not a performer. i dont recall hearing the monk-mulligan recording. i am sure i've heard it. it just didnt make an impression. anyone recall it?

By TARA BURGHART, Associated Press Writer2 hours, 47 minutes ago The Maytag Repairman wasn't a lonely job for about 200 men who auditioned to wear the blue cap and uniform of the iconic television advertising character. During an open casting call Tuesday, a husky salesman sang "One Is the Loneliest Number" to an imaginary washer and dryer, then did a kick line. A hospital worker struggled to fit the cap over his dreadlocks. And a 20-something actor talked to an appliance — again, imaginary — like it was an underappreciated wife. Obviously, the next Maytag Repairman — always lonely, ostensibly because of the dependability of Maytag's appliances — could look a lot different from the somewhat older fellows with the hangdog expressions who have played the part in the past. Whirlpool Corp., based in Benton Harbor, Mich., bought Maytag of Newton, Iowa, last year, and company officials say finding a new repairman is part of plans to revitalize the Maytag brand. Since appearing on television in 1967, he has only been played by three actors. The contract of the current repairman, Hardy Rawls, is not being renewed. Whirlpool officials say they want the new repairman to be energetic, young at heart and outgoing. But he indeed has to be a man. America, it seems, is not yet ready for a repairwoman — at least according to their market research. "If you think of other advertising icons out there ... where is Ben Crocker? Where is Juanita Valdez? Where's the Pillsbury doughgirl?" said Jeffrey Davidoff, Maytag's vice president of brand marketing. "I think there is something that (consumers) see the repairman partially as a person, but really as a character. To be true to that character, one of the things we had to do was stick with a man," Davidoff said. The company held auditions last weekend in Los Angeles and has a casting call scheduled Friday in New York City. Applications also are being accepted by mail; the new repairman will be announced in March. At the Chicago auditions Tuesday, authentic Maytag repairmen — who either own stores or work at them — were perhaps only outnumbered by struggling actors. Scott Thompson, 44, has owned a Maytag store for eight years in Valparaiso, Ind. He said he has seen some changes since Whirlpool took over Maytag — he now places orders over the computer instead of the phone, for instance — but is hopeful the expanded product base will help his business. "It's new. I wouldn't say it's good or bad. It's just new," he said. Those making it to the final round of Tuesday's auditions got to don the brimmed, blue Maytag cap. They were videotaped talking to an imaginary Maytag appliance of their choosing, then had to deliver a line of dialogue in several different ways — one man channeled John Wayne, another tried "Taxi Driver"-era Robert de Niro. The auditions also drew a bus driver, a police officer, a stockbroker, a landlord, a construction worker — and a professional football player. Indianapolis Colts quarterback Jim Sorgi backs up Peyton Manning, who has only missed one play because of injury in his nine-year NFL career. Speaking to the media during Super Bowl week in Miami, Sorgi joked that he would be a good Maytag Repairman, "the guy bored out of my mind waiting for something to do." On Tuesday, Sorgi attended the auditions as part of a promotional agreement with Whirlpool and went through the process like everyone else. In a pep talk delivered during his videotaped audition, Sorgi told an imaginary washer and dryer: "You're King Kong, baby, nobody can defeat you!" ___
