I hope he has a trip to Bolivia in mind.

Question for the non-American board members
Epithet replied to TheMusicalMarine's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Think of how much more conversational his posts were as a result. -
Not sure. I would've thought it'd be more than just a waste of space. But, as one of Daniel A's posts on the second page of that thread mentions, not all mono recordings have identical channels. I've encountered this myself, but when that happens the higher bitrates aren't in 'very very small' proportions. (To test for this I wrote a quick program a while ago that counts the number of non-identical samples across channels for WAVs.)

Then what you're witnessing is the joint-stereo encoding going nuts. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...ndpost&p=312110

I'm not sure if these fit the bill, but I do enjoy Fauré's piano works. They seem well-crafted to me. I'm not familiar with any recordings other than Paul Crossley's. (If anyone else has any other recommendations, I'd like to hear them.) Have you thought about progressing onto Debussy's orchestral works? There's a very cheap 8-CD EMI set with Martinon's recordings of Debussy and Ravel. Some individual performances might be bested (by Boulez, say), but overall I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. (I prefered these recordings over Haitink's, for instance.) Back to the piano: this might be a stretch, but tracing out Scriabin's path from the early Chopin-influenced works to the late piano sonatas is something else that occurred to me. I haven't heard too many performances of these, but Gould's unique versions of the 3rd and 5th sonatas may appeal.

Then I retract my earlier post. Signed, Anonymous Don't retract it! He insults us all by implying that we could be rational! I don't want to have to explain it, man, in case he twigs. But, I will say, given the little turnaround he made, my retraction has to be construed as irrational and irresponsible. So don't feel bad.

But this is what I like(d) about the moderating here: very laissez-faire for the most part. Daniel A: the 'unevenness' is a reference to Soulstation1 getting away with this completely unscathed. I'm not asking that we observe legal precedent here. Secondly, the number of patently outrageous threats from ariceffron ought to be some indication of just how serious they are. If he means it, now that he's banned he'll really mean it. I only hope he makes it fast and pain-free for the moderator.
-
Now that you've all conspired to ban my #1 hero ariceffron, I'm going to come round and kill you all. (Season with 'smilies' according to taste.)
-
Obviously some of us are being wilfully obtuse about this. After really goading him like that I suppose that's the only way you can win with any sense of legitimacy.
-
There's also Aric going off the deep end too, remember that too. Quite enough blame to go around several times over, if you ask me. That's why I say 'in part'. Why? Because he's predictable. I can say in hindsight that there was a 98.5% chance of him going off the deep end given the provocation. Don't poke the animals that have claws.
-
So we just lost the board's funniest member thanks in part to Soulstation1's pee-wee intellect and some uneven moderating. Good grief.

never worked on other boards... Absolutely. Just read off my intentions and forget about how impractical it would be.

What about enforcing a minimum post length?

You got 10x in secure mode? Wow.

Those are the worst kind.

Epithet.......If you rip to wav. why convert to mp3 if the CD you are burning is going to be played in a home player? Why not leave it as a wav. and copy it that way? Because it's not going to be played with a CD player? Encoding using a constant bitrate will improve the speed, right? Daniel A: if one encodes at 320kbps CBR joint-stereo, what would be the equivalent for mono?
-
The rhythmic skipping and static noises are to do with the ripping only and not the encoding: they're read errors most likely due to dirt and scratches on the CD. There's two separate stages: ripping the CD into a WAV file, and compressing ('encoding') that WAV file into an MP3. The 128kbps refers to the bitrate of the encoding, not the sampling rate. The sampling rate is probably going to be that of the CD: 44KHz. The bitrate refers to how much information is used to describe each sample, and the sampling rate refers to how often the samples are taken. I use Exact Audio Copy to rip. I'm not aware of any other program that goes to such lengths to give you error-free results: in 'secure mode' it will keep reading the same spot on the CD until it gets consistent results (or gives up). LAME is the encoder I use. You can setup EAC to work with LAME quite easily. (If you plan on using LAME I can direct you to resources that may help you decide what bitrate and other options to use.) Both these programs are free, but they may take a while to install and configure.

Some of Cosmos was on the Asante CD release, though. It's going to be one and a half albums I don't have already, and potentially Expansions, if I understand correctly after calming down and re-reading. (Just to say, it's Tender Moments that just got released as an RVG, not Time for Tyner.)
-
How am I going to get Expansions now? I have Asante and Extensions already and I don't feel like shelling out for a Mosaic for the sake of one album. Does the fact that the first two are still in print (aren't they?) zap any chance of Cosmos ever being issued separately?
-
Without trying to derail the thread: I've heard The Third Decade, Urban Bushmen, and Coming Home Jamaica. I appreciate that the last of those is hardly definitive, but if I've heard the first two have I got a pretty good idea of what the AEC really sound like? Or is their oeuvre a lot more complicated than that?

Have you checked this one out yet? Anyone down with Rautavaara's piano concertos?
-
Any tips?
