That's the problem of the dialectics of artistry, isn't it? You want to get famous so would give your stuff away and everybody knows you, but you also need bread and want to earn a little. I don't have an answer, just questions. (you write pieces named "toot-toot"? damn, Jim, that's... well, .... erm, nothing. carry on.)

well, "taking away" is the opposite of "property," and the opposite of "theft" is -- I dunno -- something that's legal?

that's a nice story, but I doubt anyone on this thread stated anything that went in THAT direction. It was more like "if coors stops making beer, the recipe should be open for others to grab up and fill the taps." Keeping stuff out of a public domain is fine & dandy, but you cannot at the same time want it to be part of the cultural heritage AND keep it locked away. My guess is that any artist is in it not just for the money, but also and probably moreso for making a contribution to art and culture. From the latter perspective, the cheaper & the more widely available, the better. Having the family sit on the rights and not make works of art available is about the worst that could happen to an artist who places value on being known. Just another point to make as I am on the fence here.
  4. glad to have been of assistance!
  5. no, it was one of those things with "piano" keys on one side and those little knobs on the other, but it has some bass octaves added I believe and has about twice as many keys (on either side) as a regular accordéon. It must weigh a lot too.

  7. I don't care really. Do you?
  8. congratulation & I hope all is well.

yes, it's the Cognac Blues disk together with the Operatic Strings Disk from the JiParis series. Disk one has something like the first 3rd of the tracks on Cognac, then throws in 10 tracks from the Operatic Strings disk (inlc alternates), followed by alternates from Cognac Blues. Disk two does something similar: first half is tracks from Cognac Blues, second half is from Operatic Strings.
  10. the album was released on CD in Japan last year. I translated the tracklisting from amazon.co.jp, using Babelfish, that is close enough to convince me that Paul is correct (and why shouldn't he be!)
  11. Ever notice how I, as an American male, can suffer from comas, but not periods? no, I haven't. Would you care to elaborate?
  12. yes

    proper reissues

good, I'll be inconsistent at my own convenience without many qualms and without fearing the wrath of the JAW then... My line runs quite close to yours I should think.
  14. not from own experience but from reading all the raving on various boards, I'd say the Koch disks get SMOKED beyond recognition...

    proper reissues

ah yes, but that is the same harsh stand that would not allow you to enjoy LFCeline... [advocate devil mode on] Seriously, if Proper were the only source for a sought after item, and copyright law can hold nothing against it, what is the problem? That you would be subsidising other activities with that acquisition? That means that probably all Freshsound releases are a no-go as well. Does that also include the new talents series? In case of some very legit reissues, knowing the larger labels are not very diligent in finding out whom to pay royalties to, would you not buy from them either? There are bad people everywhere. One may as well look at Proper/Definitive/JSP as some sort of Robin Hood: stealing from the rich (the record companies who give a shite about the performers [not true in all cases of course, but we're in devil mode here]), and giving to the poor (the grossly over-spending, poor music fan). [/advocate devil mode off] I myself have not decided yet what my stance on this issue is exactly. I tend to hold off, just like Hans. BUT: I know I buy books written by bad people. I buy music performed by bad people (see thread elsewhere). So where is the line and why? I got the Swing Tanzen verboten box because of my interest in this war time shite. That's the only Proper box on my shelves.
  16. and did you notice how I, very British/European, put a dot there instead of a comma?
  17. 145.001!

    proper reissues

but does Proper borrow? I think that is the question here. The answer is surely yes in some, but certainly not in all cases. A set like the "Swing Tanzen Verboten!" one, is highly unlikely to be a rip off of other sources, I should think, and a good buy if you want some obscure European music from Nazi times, with an interesting booklet to go with that. Other sets plainly reek of dark business, stealing masters elsewhere, going through the trouble of "touching them up" to make them sound like original, own mastering jobs. Then again I have read (here? elsewhere?) that although a Mosaic rip-off on the surface, judging merely by track title, a certain Proper set turned out to be an original remaster after all; maybe I misread though.
  19. Couw, I have been using the Photo Editor programme up to now, but when I tried it on the above photo it just came up tiny! I think I just need to play with the Media Sizer programme. As with all these things the explanation of how to use it leaves a lot to be desired. maybe you should read the instructions instead of depending on your inner wizzkid! seriously, against the odds that I am telling you something you already know too well re: Photo Editor, load the pic, click <image>, <resize>, and select a percentage value (depending on second hand translations of these menus from my German version here, so be aware these may be called similar but different). It should come out just fine in any size you wish. I should think there is a similar function in that Sizer programme you are using. More advanced programmes let you select a picture quality as well. Maybe the sizer ditty has lowest Q as default (?). Good luck & keep up the photo shooting!
  20. you're welcome! that would explain then, if you go from large to very small to a bit bigger again, you will end up with suboptimal results for the final size. Are you using Windows? There is this Microsoft Photo Editor programme that comes with that and it lets you do easy resize jobs as well. Just tell it what percentage of the original the new size should be.
  21. ah what the heck, as if I care... here's a cake for your VERY short 78th birthday then. with love from maren & couw
  22. Bev, what programme are you using to reduce size? I do not think that 100Kb for a pic that size is exactly small. Furthermore, it seems there is no interpolation between the pixels, but rather a majority vote kind of thing, which makes for very sharp edges between the pixels. The artistic value is of course VERY high---
  23. It's a german cult classic. Feuerzangenbowle is "social drinking activity" in which a rhum drained sugar cone is flambéd over a wine/fruit bowle, the sugar w/ rhum drips into the bowle as it burns; it's fun to watch and the resulting drink has more merrie making alcyhol in it... *hips* The film is pure escapism, the war was already lost when it was made. It somehow manages to walk the thin line between german ideology and critique of authority. It touches on the essence of the harmless part of the German spirit of that and all time, I guess. There is a lot of ambivalence in it: the teachers are loved and hated at once, both individuality and team spirit/friendship are underlined, much more... Don't know if there is a translated version. The first time I saw it was only after I moved to Germany.
  24. it's your cake, why ask us?
