  2. I like David Murray (basically the early stuff), but I just think the high register thing is old. It's like you can predict when it's going to happen. Saw him live twice. The band was sloppy and he came across like he was high both times.

  6. I agree. I can think of a lot of bass clarinet players, but none of them sound anything like Dolphy. P.S. On David Murry. He spends way too much time in the higher register. Seems to me more of a device to me.
  7. Kirk Gibson Dennis Eckersley Mariano Rivera
  8. I know there is an thread about his health, but I think this was deserving of it's own thread. There is a tribute concert to help him financially for those in the area. http://www.shapeshifterlab.com/portfolio/nov-22-benefit-tribute-to-the-great-arthur-blythe-oliver-lake-amiri-baraka-vernon-reid-bob-stewart-kelvyn-bell/ Even if you can't make it....there is the Arthur Blythe Parkinson fund you can use to donate . 9. A certain label released an unedited version. Since it appears a link isn't allowed....hopefully it's safe to say California is in the title.
  10. Good as any place to ask, but anyone know why Mingus didn't like Brown? http://mingusmingusmingus.com/mingus/blindfold-test

  15. Looks tasty, haven't seen it in my area. Of course, I've already got enough pumpkin ale on hand to last me well through Thanksgiving, by which time I'll have had my fill for this year. It was great. I just wish I was able to have gotten more of it.
  16. They added a new one to the Balvenie lineup. It's replacing their 15-year Single Barrel. It's been getting a lot of hype. These are from first fill ex-Bourbon barrels....and each bottle comes from a single cask, which means there is going to be some differences in taste from cask to cask....and @ 47.8% it's basically cask strength. It's an okay light Single Malt. It's nowhere as good as the the one it's replacing.

  18. Amazing just how much Cubs fans hate the choice of Renteria. He's basically considered a stopgap until they have better players for someone good to manage. Right now the over/under is the Cubs pull the plug in 2-years like they did with Sveum.
  19. Tony Dorsett and Joe DeLamielleure, and Leonard Marshall all diagnosed with having signs of CTE. Still can't believe the former players agreed to take a penny (if even that much) on the dollar in the settlement. http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/9931754/former-nfl-stars-tony-dorsett-leonard-marshall-joe-delameilleure-show-indicators-cte-resulting-football-concussions
  20. FWI I still dig "Searchin" a BIG bunch of lots, although Boyz II Men was after my prime®(est) time. No biggie. We all know you were Mr. New Jack Swing ....and were out there busting a move to them and http://youtu.be/N6blgjF6UkU and
  21. Finally got around to reading these two. Outside of the title....there is not a single thing to do with Jesus in the book. If anything it's Buddhist philosophy by way Sameul Beckett.... If you like Coetzee....you will like this. It's not in the same league as his best books, but it's a good book. Jim Crace has stated this will be his last book. I haven't read the Booker Prize winner for this year....but after reading this....I am going to have to....to figure out how it won. Excellent book. P.S. Crace has his own book on Jesus called Quarantine....about those 40 days in the dessert. Favorite by him is Being Dead. P.P.S. Colm Tóibín's The Testament of Mary is also excellent.
  22. Only Nov. 7th, but Amazon already has their Best 100 of 2013. http://www.amazon.com/b/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&linkCode=ur2&node=7734007011&pf_rd_i=7728816011&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=1651766682&pf_rd_r=05JSYAPSEHT5S99Z4QR7&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-2&pf_rd_t=101&tag=themillions-20
  23. Leo the Lip said a lot of shit about a lot of people....he wasn't even there for the first year Jackie Robinson played (he was suspended)....but cashed in on that. The great thing about today is that stats/game logs don't lie like those trying to cash in when people can't check them as easily as now. Forgetting that. He played most of his career @ 3rd before they lowered the mound to make it easier for hitters. He's the last 3rd baseman in the Hall that played before they lowered the mound. Beside all his hitting stats outside of the HR....he could field. He wasn't Brooks Robinson @ 3rd (even though he's 7th in Gold Gloves for a 3rd baseman)....but BR wasn't Santo @ the plate. Several 3rd baseman that made the Hall don't compare to him @ the plate....many of them also were not as good with the glove. Now add in he did it all while having and hiding he had type 1 diabetes....and pretty much self medicated with food by how he felt during games. All the while....in 11 straight years he played in 154+ games. 160+ games in seven assorted years. P.S. I think most of it is because the Cubs just sucked and they just don't let in that many 3rd basemen (hell, it took Eddie Matthews 5 times to get in.).....even Ernie "Mr Cub" Banks....another Cub the Lip badmouthed....even he didn't get into the HOF until the 2nd time. P.P.S. It actually would be interesting to see just how many players like Santo that made the HOF....played before and after they lowered the mound.....and I bet he's also the very last one it will happen with.
  24. Just want to say....Ron Santo was long before my time....but a complete crime it happened after he died. This year's list. http://baseballhall.org/news/press-releases/twelve-finalists-comprise-expansion-era-ballot-hall-fame-consideration-2014 The list of those for the regular vote. Only person for sure is Maddux. I don't see any of the PED's ever getting in. http://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/hof_2014.shtml
  25. Jeffrey Loria sold a painting for about $6.4 million less than the Marlins entire payroll this year. Taxpayers on the hook over the next 40-years in the boondoggling of the new stadium.... $2.4 billion. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-11-06/giacometti-s-diego-portrait-fetches-record-32-6-million.html
