Hope everything is ok again! Maren wants a re-run after 99. Maybe I'll turn that into a poll when we get closer. Cheers!

Jazz Special / Denmark
neveronfriday replied to Jim R's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Hm, I think I'm the wrong guy to ask. Jazz-wise, I'm more Scandinavian than anything (having lived and travelled there for many years) and the German jazz scene hasn't impressed me very much these last couple of years. I'm sure there is tons of talent out there, I just haven't listened to or seen any (live). Because I attend just about every Copenhagen Jazz Festival, I could give you a lot more info on recent developments in Scandinavia (especially Denmark). Anyone else with info on German Jazz? P.S.: All the shopping I have done lately (in regard to German jazz) are big bands of the 40s and early 50s, and some recordings by people like Horst Jankowski, Peter "Fatman" Herbolzheimer ... and that's about it. Cheers! -
Jazz Special / Denmark

I have read the two available international editions and whenever I'm in DK (at least once, mostly twice a year), I pick up the regular Danish edition. I'm not your regular jazz mag reader, but this magazine I like enough to pick up back issues whenever I've missed some (if your Danish is good, they have most of their stuff available through their site). I love Danish/Scandinavian jazz, and the coverage of that field (of course not only) is excellent. Cheers! -

Hi everyone, it seems that everytime I go away for a couple of days I stumble over some older Oscar Peterson release and scoop it up. This time I found the Oscar Peterson Pablo-CD-Collection (10 CDs) for around 50 Euro without booklet. Now, the CDs have discographical information on the back cover, but the booklet is sorely missing because the info printed on the CDs is minimalistic. Does anyone have this booklet and could make a copy of it for me? PM me, and maybe we can trade sth? Cheers!

E.S.T. are probably my favorite contemporary European band (the Tord Gustavsen Trio comes in a very close second, being a bit more relaxed). E.S.T. are far from boring or dull and in my opinion, they have been a major force in jazz since their inception. Their live video, E.S.T. Live in Stockholm (2003), is well worth checking out and will give a good idea what these guys are about (ignore the at times irritating camera work). E.S.T. are stunning live, and they can play up a storm and are real crowd pleasers. They have managed what few other bands have achieved - to get young people to listen to intelligent jazz, really get into it and even pass it onto their friends. A rare feat. Cheers!

bLiNdFoLd TeSt #7 - discussion
neveronfriday replied to Man with the Golden Arm's topic in Blindfold Test
Hi again, I'm away for a couple of days and forgot to take my BFT along (I did take a whole bunch of Blue Notes and a Japanese Teddy Wilson CD, and I was going to pack the BFT, and then stuff got in the way, and I was late and, ... ) I will chime in next Wednesday or Thursday when I'm back. Especially track 5, one of my faves (if it was 5 and the one from the M. disk which has been in constant rotation at my place since I got it). Please do NOT post anything in this thread until I'm back. Cheers! -
Say it ain't so! Here's the cake for the day AFTER your 99th: Hm. That could be considered an incentive. Cheers!

Not that long ago, my father was visiting. We talked quite a bit about jazz, his life in Germany during WWII and shortly after, and about this board. I told him that there is a wealth of information to be had and he actually asked me to forward a question to all of you. I have already asked EKE BB and he did send what I would think is the definitive answer, but I'd still be happy if you could have a look and see if you can come up with anything not mentioned here. Here we go: We were talking about Duke Ellington and my dad recalls listening to one specific session on his old radio (which he says he didn't have anymore after 1949, but he admits that he might have confused something there) which has stayed in his mind ever since then. It was a version of "Take the A-Train" which he describes like this: The tune opened with a trio or small group session with vocals (female) and then segued into a full-blown big band recording (as far as he recalls, without vocals ... but he's not sure anymore). All he recalls is a line like "if you take the A-Train from Harlem" or something like that, and that's it. EKE BB came up with this info: When asked if there were any previous sessions which could fit my father's description, EKE BB wrote: As far as I can tell then, the Betty Roche version seems to be the one. To be sure though, here my question: Does anyone know of another version which was recorded before 1952 and fits my dad's description above? If at all, if there was one at all, it must have been before, because the Fitzgerald one he surely knows (he loves Ella) and timewise, after '52 would be too late. Any input greatly appreciated! Thanks and Cheers!

Maybe we should be planning a birthday party for my 99th? Might be the last chance to celebrate because once I reach that, I ain't going through all of it again. Nope. No way, José. Cheers! [And, once again, thanks for the cake!]

I didn't like him from the start (and I had been following his rants on other boards), but I did not stay away. I don't really know why, but there was a brief glimpse of his knowledge when we talked about Thad Jones etc. and having met Jones in Denmark, it sure sounded like DEEP was right on and knew what he was talking about. I was also hoping that he would come around and start posting valuable stuff here, but he hardly ever did. Yes, some members (mea culpa) did taunt him because of the way he was behaving, but I could tell that Patricia and some others were all hoping he might drop the act. I think B3er handled this really well, ignoring some people like me who cried wolf on day one when he arrived (and even PMed him about it), but in retrospect his sorry a** could have been kicked a whole lot earlier. But, we always know better after things have happened, so, kudos to the management team. Contrary to what I believed on day one when DEEP arrived, B3er was right to give him the benefit of the doubt, no matter what transpired afterwards. To find the silver lining here, one could say I did learn something after all. Cheers!

I did send you a mail and I'm not on the list? Did the mail not reach you, or was my screenname too awe-inspiring that you simply could not get yourself to post it in the list? Cheers! [edit: typo]

At some carnival freak show here in Germany (just about to happen again for five days or so) I saw some guys with giant plumes rammed up their rear ends. My question: do they qualify as goobers? And if yes, would they be required to wear the hat as well?
