  1. You could also look at it this way: Lately I've read a ton of articles popping up right and left that talk about the demise of the CD within 2 to 5 years. Already now, when I look around, it's clear that the CD is a format of the past and will - just like the LP - be relegated to its niche. The future is downloading, storing your files digitally, whatever. I'm not going to go along with another format change and I do not trust digital files (I've had too many expensive backup solutions fail over a comparatively short period of time). Soooo, I'm holding on to my CDs and once I'm gone, although it's not a nice thought, I don't really give a damn about what happens to my collection. Half of my collection was bought when I was still married and a larger part of that I probably won't be listening to again (or it was never my kind of music anyways), but I'll hold on to it for two reasons: a) Perhaps, I might enjoy some of it when I'm old and demented b) or the future CD niche market will cough up (much) better prices. Already now some hard-core collectors are paying premium prices for original CDs released in the 80s and early 90s, simply because they want to avoid the "loudness" problem of many more recenty or recently remastered CDs. I might be wrong, but quite a bit of the music - if it's from the time period above - will probably go for quite a bit more in a few years. Just my 2 or 3 cents.
  2. [Old thread, but ... with recent activity. , so ... ] That's exactly the number that got me hooked. It was on an early Shaw compilation from 1988 (really crappy-sounding CD from the UK, "Diamond Series. Artie Shaw: 16 Top Tracks") and if it had had grooves, the CD would have been completely worn out in the "Special Delivery Stomp spot" (track 1) today. I have the Self-Portrait box, a cheapo 10-CD box (Membran) and the three "Jazz Tribune" (14, 37 and 67) twofers. There's quite a bit of duplication between these, but when I bought them, all of them were dirt-cheap. I'd love to buy and hear any spectacular remaster of his material.
  3. Took some quick pics (in the dark) of the two "L'histoire du jazz vocal" boxed sets (Francis & Schwarz again), 1911-1940 and 1941-1953. Now I'm only missing the big band box. I paid much less for these sets, about Euro 10 (2nd set) and 20 (first set) via eBay and, as far as I recall, Amazon marketplace (Germany). http://www.flickr.com/photos/72483581@N00/
  4. Yeah, unfortunately he's basically relegated to smaller venues and far from going on a larger tour. His guitar skills have deteriorated substantially, but his harmonica playing and his boom-like voice are better than ever. He had the place cooking in about a minute. Stage presence to boot, credibility and oodles of skill and, of course, experience.. I'm waiting for a sound board recording and might post a snippet here or there if I'm permitted.
  5. Great, great musician. "Giant Steps" and "Lady Be Good ...For Ella" are played regularly here.
  6. Sidney "Guitar Crusher" Selby tonight, on short notice at that. Glad I kept up with his more recent set list. Great fun. The guy still kicks ass at 75. Played a few Fats Domino and Muddy Water tunes, plus a slew of other favorites. Great fun. He'll be all over Europe these next weeks. Check him out if you find the time.
  7. Parts of it are now functional. http://www.chantdumonde.com/fr/label/jazz.php
  8. No leg pulling going on. Will be swinging through for a short spell and are supposed to be meeting up with another party....but things are still in a state of flux. I'll drop ya a line if things work out. That would be fun. .....but only one or two? I do that before breakfast. Sounds good. Let me know. And don't tell me you can take more than a few .... and that before breakfast? Weened on Budweiser (Light) and a big mouth, to boot.
  9. I'm afraid Chris doesn't see it that way (anymore)... Yeah, pity.
  10. I'm glad to hear your cow clock survived. I accidentally set fire to my wind-up pig the other day ... that I was given 25 years ago (still worked until it burned) for being an honorary member of the one-and-only worthwhile high school club, the MCPs (Male Chauvinist Pigs). I bought a new one. Smartass. I will post about that here when I get some other stuff done ... and once we figure out how to present that sessionography/discography stuff in a sensible way. How about this one: I used to live next to a brewery (two houses down the road) that gave me a free crate once a month, simply because I took every single person I knew there on a regular basis (when they closed up in the evening, there was always time to booze it up with the workers (for free). The brewery went bankrupt a few years ago (I wonder why), but when they were still around they made the best damn beer in Germany, "Landbier". It was an old recipe, a Weizen-like beer which was left unfiltered. Splendid stuff. And, yes, the good beers here are quite cheap. I pity the people who have to pay import prices. I've become a wine guy myself, living so close to France. Beer isn't happening all that often anymore. Err, the Pope is German? Since when? Time to check the news. Err, you got me on that one. No idea. But it would wear a funny hat. I'm sure of that. Good to be back, guys. Volkher
  11. As you know, I'm a fan of the programme! I don't have the Hoagy C. one. I might check that out. I was enjoying the 3-CD "... plays Duke Ellington" (New World Records 1988/1998) once again today. Great stuff.
  12. Does it have these tunes? 1. summertime 2. come sunday 3. django 4. afternoon in paris 5. i'll remember april 6. all the things you are 7. 2 degrees east 3 degrees west 8. sacha's march 9. marching
  13. Note: nix grooving to ... [blush] The Singers Unlimited. The Complete A Capella Sessions. Universal/MPS 2006. [/blush] Great sound, great reissue. Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer (he of Saba and MPS fame) was perhaps the best sound engineer we ever had in Germany. I picked this double-CD up second-hand (as new) for 5 Euro.
  14. Do you keep your Mosaics on some kind of elaborate, candle-lit shrine and feel compelled to genuflect each time you walk past them or something? They're just CDs! I have a shrine for my Mosaics. Man, the candles I've lit there have cost more than what I've spent on those cheapo CDs these past two to ten years.
  15. In my view that's not an excuse not to answer all the messages I sent him over the last few weeks. He was last active on this forum on February 26. Hm. Tjobbe has been one of the most reliable people (no offense to others) that I've met on here. Something must have/might have happened. Hope everything is OK with him.
  16. I'm pretty close to Bingen. Haven't followed your travel plans. If you are actually in the area and are not pulling my leg, contact me. We could have a beer or two if it's on a weekend (late Friday, all of Saturday and Sunday).
  17. Guy, I've always been inbetween. It's my life's story. a) Thanks for all your help in the past. b) I'd take that Complete Dinah Washington off your hands whenever you run out of space. c) I need one copy (=original) of that JiP sampler. If you ever find one, contact me. A complete JiP set gives more head.
  18. No. All you have left is an autobahn without (in many areas) speed limits.....and now the evil EU bureaucrats in Brussels are conspiring to take that away! Sorry, but you got that all wrong: THAT's what I have when things get too bleak ... P.S.: I'm the ONLY German without a driver's license, a car and a mobile phone.
  19. Yo! I'm out of shape, but the form is OK, I think. P.S.: The Count Basie stuff will be resurrected, believe you me.
  20. I'm a civil servant. Hope is all I have left. I'll be patient & thanks a million for even spending the time on trying!
  21. ...we're not necessarily interested in what you drink, but rather if you shave (face, that is) while standing at the wash basin....or in the shower with one of those neat little fogless mirrors? I hate it when those cruddy suction cups weaken and they fall off the wall a) I shave face and I stand at the wash basin (or what's left of it). b) Re: suction cups: [my bathroom] The crocodile falls off all the time. I hate suction cups.
  22. I'm just beginning to, I think. Cheers!
