  1. indeed! for off the rack recordings, those are s u p e r b. any listener reading this who doesn't own that set, do yourself a favor and seek them out. there has never been any west coast quintet club jazz to surpass this playing (although the hawes sessions come close). immaculate stuff, -e- Agreed. Some of my favorites. Just wondering. Have they ever been given the maximized remastering treatment? I just had a look on Amazon.de and besides that only three are available (Vol. 3 is missing and Vol. 1 is an LP), it is impossible for an average user to see which issue/reissue we're talking about here. I would assume it's the originals I have?
  2. Thanks! Is that StormP as in THE Danish StormP?. If it is, great online name!
  3. There was a time when I was totally into sound, stereo components, cables, HiFi mumbo jumbo etc. and I still have the resulting (adequate) rig in my living room. Today I just enjoy the music if the labels let me. I do have something against (re)masters that make your brain explode by maxing out everything that could possible be maxed out, but aside from that I find myself caring less and less about sound quality. I guess that comes with age? Or is that dementia setting in?
  4. Agreed on all counts. Currently I'm enjoying the hell out of disc 3 of the Cicero set. "Memories of Clausenburg" might not be everyone's favorite title, but that one swings like mad. "Dort in der Ferne", a decidedly Brubeckian piece, "Der Schlitten Eilt" that one wouldn't expect to have such a South-American rhythm foundation when looking at the title, "Und Bach? (After Prélude In C Minor)" with its pearly runs (that one actually has quite a bit of OP in it), etc. Just great stuff. Maybe it's also because there are some very fond memories attached to this set; memories of a more carefree time way back when (I was a much younger me in the early 70s).
  5. Nicely put, especially since the only way I could think of describing it is that Cicero isn't anal about it as Loussier often was. I also have the Loussier run (which is not bad at all) and I like the Cicero much better.
  6. I just gave the entire "Eugen Cicero - Swinging The Classics On MPS" set a spin again and have to just post here once more to give the set a 5-thumbs up. The sound is excellent and the tracks are as well. This should not be compared to some of the later "schmaltzy" stuff (Piano Dreams, or whatever that crud was called, strings and all) that he put out. I remember my dad having one/two of those in his collection and already as a kid not being impressed one bit (technically brilliant, but ...). This stuff here swings! Get it.
  7. Barbara Dennerlein (Old Fairy Tale Blues) " At a TV broadcast on the occassion of Oscar Klein's 60th birthday party in 1990 Oscar organized a jam with organist Barbara Dennerlein and drummer Charly Antolini."
  8. At the moment, I'm making my dad buy me the recent MPS stuff (he used to have most of it in his own LP collection) and I've already got the Cicero. Excellent, if you are into that kind of music (as you said). I also like the live recording: Euhen Cicero: Solo distributed by in-akustik. The "Swinging The Classics On MPS" set I like better though.
  9. One of the best, and sadly ignored by the majors. Most of the stuff I have (20 discs or so) comes from various cheap-o labels.
  10. So far, a tad below 50 Euro is all I could find (49, xx). It does have 119 tunes though ... that's about 42 cents per track. Maybe that's a better way of looking at it.
  11. The recent Peterson single CDs had the original cover art (the first run (boxed set) didn't), so I hope they won't do that for this set again (box without, later single (new) remasters with).
  12. I haven't ordered mine yet, but I'll get it for myself around Christmas. I've checked out all the samples and the set sounds great. What I'm looking forward to most is the great sound I think this set will have. MPS had excellent engineers in the first place and all their other recent remasters I've gotten so far are just wonderful. It's going to be a swinging Christmas 'round here ...
  13. Most of you'll probably laugh, but I've waited for this set for years. --> Click (German site ... but with track listing at the end). Should have the usual great MPS sound. I think it has all 10 LPs he recorded in the 60s and 70s for the label, with Joe Pass, Freddy Rundquist, Heribert Thusek and John Rae (vibes), Eberhard Weber and Peter Witte (bass) and Charly Antolini and Kenny Clare (drums). Edit: the LPs Art Van Damme In San Francisco (1966) Ecstasy (1967) The Gentle Art Of Art (1967) Lullaby In Rhythm (1968) Art In The Black Forest (1968) On The Road (1969) Art And Four Brothers (1969) Keep Going (1970) Blue World (1970) Squeezing Art & Tender Flutes (1972).
  14. The lowest price I ever saw was Euro 61,76 and I can vaguely remember it being 10 Euro cheaper for a very short time before that. The above price was from around Christmas 2004, the time I bought it. I think it has been steadily above 70 Euro since around that time.
  15. This one is a corner stone of my collection. The sound is more than fine and besides the Farah Griffin essay which, as far as I recall, had some factual errors, plus the slight overproduction that Clementine already mentioned, I would sell other important items from my collection to rebuy Lady Day, should I ever have to. It really comes down to the music, and it is represented here in a glorious fashion. BTW: On Amazon France, the box is currently 78,07 Euro. A more than reasonable price. Lady Day (78 Euro) Get it!
  16. Thanks! Downloaded it and am enjoying it!
  17. Happy birthday! Have a good one!
  18. Been getting into these guys, Bohren & Der Club of Gore. Interesting band history. Don't know if they qualify. Weird stuff, dark, brooding ... somewhat unique. Other releases have been hits (Sunset Mission) and misses (Geisterfaust - currently they're apparently trying to slow their music down to a crawl), but if you need to lay off the downers, this music might help.
  19. Yo, have a good one.
  20. If I'm not totally mistaken, the soundtrack was altered to include "more modern" sound effects. Sorry, but shite if you're into getting original films. I'm glad they didn't allow George Lukas to touch this one up with cuddly aliens and goofy special effects. Pacino shot first.
  21. Idiot! grrrrr You just effectiverly ended my moratorium. Haven't bought anything for a long time ... now I have to. Thanks for the link! grrrrrrrrrrrr
  22. No. Way. I'd rather golf, to be perfectly honest. P.S.: The washboard is OK, though.
  23. Hey, I've got two Roland TD-10s , chained together. Nice to see another Roland man on here. Maybe we should jam one day? Nose flute, guitars, two drummers and my comb. Man, we'll blow them away.
