I distinctly remember that this was supposed to be a new (+ newly remastered) one with some bonus tracks as a twofer this or next month. The list I read that on wasn't that old and used to be very reliable. But looking at what came out beginning of this month, I guess those were the ones and the twofer idea died along the way. Anything else I should get (Johansson) while I've got my credit card out (besides the twofer you mentioned above)?

Thanks, but I don't think it is what I meant. There's some sort of remastered/expanded twofer coming out (end October?/November?) ... I read it on some odd jazz list I received from a website in DK that has gone offline. I checked my usual Danish mail order sources, but so far nothin g is listed.

Just for the sake of argument: How do you know what the people want? Isn't it more the case that everyone is assuming that they know what the people want? Not much has changed since Woodrow Wilson, I think. From what I heard, the people want to have an atmosphere in which they can leave the house without getting shot, blown up and/or dismembered. They want the same for their children. I'm not going to argue the human rights aspect here or others (since I tend to agree with a lot of what you said), but it's a very comfy attitude to have and say "The people want this or that, no matter what the cost", all the while zapping through the news programs in your safe home. I talked to a representative from a southern province (Iraq) who said (and I'm paraphrasing here): "I don't give a f*ck about democracy, elections, human rights and international involvement. I want to live." Later he added that the population itself should be allowed to follow up on tendencies of westernization that were there before, without having the whole state dragged from a somewhat pre-industrial state into the 21st century (a process, I may add, we allowed ourselves 1 1/2 centuries to complete) in a few measly years.

01) lmao - Doesn't take much brains to figure out who is going to comply with that rule. It's like giving a kid a bar of chocolate and saying: "You can take it home, but you CAN'T EAT IT. HA!" Plain stupid. 02) What we have yet to mention here are many live tapes with godawful sound. What you have are all these amateurs with equipment they can't handle, people who had board access and then ran their files through enhancers and whatnot, just because they also stole the software and CAN manipulate the sound files ("cool, man"), idiots that place their microphones right next to that fat dude who yells "YEAH, MAN" into every quiet passage or next to the only couple having sex during the concert, and so on. 03) The whole discussion is superfluous. The traders will record and trade no matter what. As mentioned many times here, more often than not they belong to a sub-breed that does not give a hoot about anything or anyone as long as they get their fix and can wank off next to fourty piles of once-heard recordings (respectable traders not withstanding). 04) The collectors I've run across on the Internet are often the types that WILL collect anything, no matter how bad, retag it, list it, annotate it, whatever ... they probably also collect Japanese teenage girl's spit in plastic bags (new fad hopefully not heading our way soon). Waste of time.

Yep, I also have older Sony stuff that (still) works like a charm. These past years though I've had several terrible Sony products. The DVD player was the last in a line of consumer products with declining quality (control). If you read the forums around the Net (and I know you do ) you know that I'm not the only person complaining about this decline in quality. I think Sony has been trying to get out of that by introducing new product lines and pushing the quality factor again, but I don't think we'll see if this worked until middle of next year or so. Philips I'm very neutral about. Mine works. So, ok with me. BTW: To make such a strict decision and saying that I will NOT EVER touch Sony again is perhaps the last piece de resistance we consumers can pull out of the hat these days. I don't care if they ever improve - they've lost me as a customer because they just swallowed up too much of my money with crappy products (and HORRIBLE service on several occasions!). There's enough competition to turn to, so ... no more Sony.

What I said elsewhere on this board: The West is making a huge mistake by imposing its values and its worldview. It's going to prove to be/have been one of the biggest mistakes of the 21st century. We haven't even started to see the backlash that's going to happen. P.S.: I say this as a stern advocate of, for example, Marshall and Truman without whom my country would have been a lot worse off. But I also say this as someone who has known Iranians and Iraquis for most of his life (many of which were refugees who came to Europe end 70's) and understands that even the ones who did find refuge in the West are highly critical of current and past European and American foreign policy. I'm not going to quote any of their statements here (we need a *beep* smiley) but this summer I took part in a conference on Middle Eastern affairs and what I (over)heard in the evenings, at the bar or at dinner, conversing with many of the guests from the various Middle Eastern states, scared me, to say the least. With our (continuous) intervention(s) we have not only managed to kill more people than all secret services of the region couldn't have killed in a hundred years, but we will, in the end, pull out and leave the place in shambles, something the entire region will need decades to recover from (if at all). We've given a huge boost to fundamentalism and have practically handed the power to radicals that have the region in a vice grip that tightens every time we move a finger. Pants suits? Well, not much longer I would think. Altogether a dreadful situation and a policy which is completely counterproductive. As an aside: if you visit, as I did this year, the Turkish countryside and see the effects of the central government's imposing of new laws (and radical break with traditions) to comply with European requirements for membership in the EU, you can see in a nutshell what's happening south of there as well: the common people don't get it and people who were completely apolitical (is that the right word) are being radicalized in a very short time. I talked to some Turkish farmers who had absolutely no idea what was going on, why things were changing at such a rapid pace, sometimes in direct confrontation with (religious) traditions and every single one of them favored a return to a more traditional leadership (authoritarian) to get things "back to normal". No matter what I thought of those utterances, to me (and the representatives of the EU that were along) it looked like major trouble brewing. We're in over our heads here. Time to rethink our agenda before things really blow.

Lucky ba**ard. P.S.: When I bought a Sony DVD player which never worked from the start, Sony insisted on repairing it (they replaced just about every part and it still didn't work). I gave up after trying to get that piece of sh*t fixed three times. Instead of suing their sorry asses I ... decided never, ever in my life to buy anything from Sony again. Never. ... trashed it ... bought a Philips top-of-the line for less which works like a charm. Oh, do yourself a favor: never buy any Sony equipment, ever. They suck.

Maybe judging the number of recordings traded is an age issue? If you know where to look (and we're not talking the usual trading forums), there is an unbelievable amount of tapes being traded. I was surprised myself when I saw it. Get yourself, f.ex., a DC++ client, find the right hubs and you're smokin'. I have no interest in this stuff myself, but just checking one or two Russian hubs, I could double my collection of CDs easily ... and I have lots. And that's just jazz recordings. If you were into trading Led Zeppelin live tapes, I think every fart they ever produced was caught on tape by some "fan" and you could download it.
