  1. I believe on the other thread, someone found it was just under 50 tracks that overlapped with Affinity, which makes it even more of a no-brainer in my case. I just need to come up with the dosh now! May I refer to post #66 in the original thread about this box. I'll be getting this box in December with my 13th month.
  2. Off course, but CD's are also tangible and downloads or streams are not. Yes, you can burn a download to a CD. If you have a record or a CD you have something you can hold in your hands. What happens to the entry in the disco if the website that offers the stream disapears? For me including digitital streams/downloads in a discography is a new step of wich I don't know what it means for the feature of collecting.
  3. Go to either: New/reissues and set the numbre of days to 4 and scroll down. Or do a word search on Wolfgang's Vault. OK, I understand now. I thought you meant that you could actually stream or download the music there. To hear the music (for free) go to http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/ For downloading you have to pay.
  4. Go to either: New/reissues and set the numbre of days to 4 and scroll down. Or do a word search on Wolfgang's Vault.
  5. Tom Lord started to incorporate downloads from Wolfgangs Vault in his online disco. some 40 concerts so far. Artist include Benny Goodman, Carmen McRae, Charles Mingus, Buddy Rich etc.
  6. How do you like this set? I know a lot of people rank it near the top of Mosaics. I missed out on this and I can't justify paying OOP prices on this... One day though!!! It's a good set, I'm not heavily into vocal jazz and this or a Chris Connor CD often does the trick. So many songs on it that there's always one to fit your mood. I love this set. Anita is my favorite jazzsinger. Highlights are the Cole Porter and the Rodgers & Hart albums. IIRR this was the firts Mosaic I bought through their website.
  7. The Properbox "The Arrangers Touch" disc 2. Disc 1 has as sample of Duke Ellington's style "Reminiscing In Tempo" (all 4 parts). I wonder how representative of Ellington's style this is. Four sepereate tracks would have said more about Ellington's style than this I think. Not that I don't like Reminiscing.
  8. In the case of the missing blues tracks either Armstrong solo is pretty much the same as on the other take or he only plays obligatos. The Alternate of "I can't give you..." is not of very good sound quality. Maybe that is the reason it was omitted. It is extremly rare. If I recall right there is only one copy known it is in the John R.T. Davies collection.
  9. If I counted correctly there will be 190 tracks in this new set (including breakdowns) 18 are previously unissued. Of the issued material the only thrack I don't have is the Mamie Smith. For me 10% will be new. This is reason enough to buy this set. The much beter sound and the book also helps. Off Course I could listen to the 180 tracks I have by pulling out all the diffrent CD's by Hawkins, Henderson, Carter, McKinney's Cottonpickers etc. It's a good idea I think having a selection showcasing Hawkins' development in his early years. Comparing this set with the Affinity set there are 47 tracks overlapping. The Affinity set covers the years 1929-1941, the Mosaic 1922-1947. The Affinity has no Fletcher Henderson, (Little)Chocolad Dandies, Lionel Hampton, McKinney's Cotton Pickers nor the Benny Carter 30 January 1940 session. For the sake of completenes also missing are the 3 sessions with Spike Hughes, the Varisty Seven 14 December 1939 and 15 January 1940 sessions and the Quintones session of 2 February, 1940. Of the European recordings 5 takes recorded for Dutch Decca were not availlable or overlooked at the time of issue of the Affinity. Otherwise it's complete.
  10. The label "Joe Davis" is not owned by Sony/BMG and is not public domain. Prestige re-issued this and other "Joe Davis" sessions
  11. He died after a short sickbed aged 79. He played profesionaly more than 50 years in many combinations. Last time I saw him was at Haarlem Jazz in 2010. A truly great player. At the moment I don't know any more to add.
  12. The Pearl CD GEM 0022 "Gershwin & Grofé" boasts Bix Beiderbecke clarinet. Must be an other fellow than the cornetist from Davenport
  13. The Onzy Matthews Select is great! It took repeated listens to really enjoy it. Great composer/arranger and his bands were top notch. I see that the Jonah Jones is Last Chance, thoughts on it? Don't have it. I love the Onzy Matthews set. Don't know about the Jonah Jones. Just listened to the sound samples liked them but not crazy about them. Might change my mind...
  14. In the online Tom Lord disco the line up is the same.
  15. I recomend this set. If only for the session with Benny Carter. Nothing wrong with the collaborations with Dizzy either.
  16. The Coleman Hawkins box will be a no brainer. Would love a Lucky Thompson Box (select or big box) any year . Chick Webb/Ella Fitzgerald box glad that will be 2012, financialy speaking.
  17. Of the 10 names to choose from I like Ben Webster most folowed by Chu Berry and Dexter Gordon. Not on the list: Don Byas, Stan Getz, Lucky Thompson, Paul Gonsalves. But me liking these players does not mean they are influencial. I read somewhere that at music schools saxophone pupils have to learn Gonsalves solo's by heart.
  18. The LP as such not but the whole session is on Solo Art SACD 21 "Then You'll Remember Me"
  19. If you want to hear more of Fess' stuff there are the following CD's Retrieval RTR 79032 Pre-Victors The complete set 1925 - 1927 and Jazz Oracle 8041 Fess Williams 1926-30 (2CD) This Set has the Victor's and some alternate takes to the Retrieval.

  21. No nothing like that happend to me. I don't use Pay Pal much and am living in the Netherlands.
  22. The European Commission who issued the directive was not democratically elected, as no European government is in a parliamentary system, but the directive was approved by the European Parliament, wchich was democratically elected. Besides, the directive will have to be turned into legislation by all national parliaments of the EU member states, which are all democratically elected. Yes your right. It won't be easy to reverse this directive. I don't think it will play even a minor role in the next election for the European Parliament. But I'll stop here discussing Europian Union and democracy that would belong in the Politics section.
  23. Why is it a bizarre decision? Because it will affect Hep too? I would name it bizarre because it's retroactive. Products that have been on the market legaly for years now become illegal. If record companies would keep their entire catalogue in stock then I wouldn't object.
  24. Question: Who voted for the people who took that decision? Right answer: Nobody
