  1. Sorry -- don't have strong memories of it. I do very much like the "The Big Sound" date on Verve and the RCA Hodges-Strayhorn big band album, plus the Hodges 1956-61 small-group things that Granz recorded and that came out in a Mosaic box. The The Big Sound date is included in the Hodges 1956-1961 Mosaic set. Talk about failing memory -- I bought "The Big Sound" separately a good many years after I bought the Mosaic set. From 'The Big Sound' only the second session of September 3, 1957 is on the Mosaic Set. The sessions of June 26, 1957 and the first session of September 3 1957 are big band recordings and thus not included on this small groups set. So you were right to buy the Fresh Sound.
  2. Yes it has a 24 page booklet.
  3. Thanks all of you. I had a very nice day and just had a very good meal (here it is 10:40 PM). Now listening to Isham Jones on Timeless Historical.

    Jazz Oracle

The Jazz Oracle "Jelly Roll" Morton is not on the market yet but there is already an announcement for a next one. http://www.worldsrecords.com/cgi-bin/storeR.cgi?specific=itemcode&phrase=72656 The Merritt Brunies sides were issued last year on Retrieval sandwiched between a lot of recordings already available on Timeless Historical. The newest Jazz Oracle has all of them plus some tracks from New Orleans that have not been on CD before. Like the Scranton Sirens Orchestra. The Red Nichols sets have arrived safely. :)

  9. Well how about the 4 Ragtime to jazz volumes on Timeless. I find this stuff fascinating. I am looking forward to the Jazz Oracle collecting all early Jelly Roll Morton Band recordings. The Retrieval solo piano disc and the JSP Victor set are not to be missed either.
  10. Mark Tucker writes in Duke Ellington The Early Years page 95 "He had become friendly with Willie "The Lion" SMITH, James P. Johnson, Fats Waller and other musicians whom he had met at clubs and jam sessions. So friendly not friends Fats is named a number of times buit always as being similar in piano style and once as a tutor to Ellington. Tucker´s book follows Ellington upto his openingnight at the Cotton Club

  12. Once in a while I wonder about Bozy White's Bunny Berigan Bio/Disco. Today I found this on http://www.jazz-book.com/news.html "White, Bozy: Bunny Berigan bio-discography. This project has made further progress. To be published in 2 volumes later this year. " I hope this comes true. It would be a fitting hommage to both Bunny and Bozy

  17. Evans was realy great today. Personaly I think that Schleck Brothers themself are to blame for Andy not to win the Tour because he was too much looking out for Frank wanting him to be second. If he realy wants to win the Tour he should let go of his brother and go for his own chances. Frank is off course als a great rider but not as good as Andy might be. Now they are both on the podium tomorrow but not on that all important first place. It is a first in the Tour for two brothers to be on the podium. Here in Holland all eyes are on Johnny Hoogerland with his 33 stiches.
  18. Evans could win if he showed more courage to attack. Today he was good but attacked a little too late. After Andy's attack the pack was a bit lame. What could happen tomorrow and Saturday? A number of scripts: Andy tries again for the Yellow Jersey if he succeeds he most probably wins the Tour. if he fails then either Voeckler, Evans or brother Frank still have a chance. Evans attacks instead of looking at what the others do and then he reacts. If he succeeds depending on the margin he gets it's all down to the time trail. If Voeckler hangs on to the Yellow tomorrow who knows what he might do in the timetrail Saturday. A Frenchman in the Yellow so close to Paris. He would be the first French winner since Hinault in 1985. I don't count on Contador any more. Anyway tomorrow I'll have the afternoon off from work to watch it live.

    Ellington 2012

There were mixed reactions last time I know. It was my first Ellington conference and I had no reference point from previous conferences. Most lectures/talks (Bjarne Busk, Steven Lasker, Earl Okin to name a few that spring to mind)were interesting I thought. And I was happy to meet a number of people I only knew from the Internet. I'll be glad to meet them again. And I loved the bands playing Ellington's music live. Off course some were better than others but I liked them being live. Harmony in Harlem was my favorite. I didn't care much for Michael Garrick's own stuff.

    Jazz Oracle

Finaly Red Nichols gets his due. 1926-1932 Red Nichols recorded with his Five Pennies much for Brunswick. His band features many greats: Miff Mole, Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman and Jack Teagarden to name but a few. Later Red was put down by a lot of players. Pee Wee Russel said he ran his band like Himmler ran the Gestapo. During the LP reissue era there was no complete Five Pennies series. He did better in the CD era (list not complete just an overview): 1997 Jazz Oracle issues Red Nichols on Edison 1998 Retrieval issues Red Nichols & Miff Mole 1925-1927 1998 Frog issues Miff Mole vol. 1 and 2. 2001 Jazz Oracle issues Louisiana Rhythm Kings 2001-2008 Classics issues 6 CD's of Red Nichols (2 CD's short of getting to 1932) 2004 Jazz Oracle issues The Read Heads 1925-27 3 CD set 2006 On the the Bix Beiderbecke site a 7 CD Mosaic set Red Nichols and the Five Pennies announced. Track listing reveals that there are no unissued takes but a number of alternates issued only in Canada wich were previously unknown. Producers: Jeff Healey and Dr. Robert Litwak. Notes by Richard Sudhalter. This set would only contain Universal owned recordings. 2008 Jeff Healey and Richard Sudhalter die. 2010 When I asked Scott Wenzel about the set he replied there was copyright BS. 2011 Worldsrecords announces 3 Jazz Oracle 3 CD sets Red Nichols Complete New York Brunswick Sessions. This series will include both the Universal and Sony owned recordings. The notes are by Richard Sudhalter. As bonus tracks are included the Victors not included in the two Frog Miff Mole issues, the Harmony Irving Brodsky session and a track missing from the IAJRC issue of Radio transcriptions. For full track listing see the Worldsrecords site. This is the first Jazz Oracle issue since 2009
  24. Hello,

I choose the name Stompy Jones beacause it's a Duke Ellington song and I needed a name. Someone already uses Monk Bought Lunch. Duke is my main interest in music. Thanks for the message.

  25. The Nostalgia Arts CD's have a number (but not all) of the alternate takes. They are just not on the same CD as the master takes. Chronology was not the greatest concern of this series. I don't think Mosaic could have done this set because most of it was recorded for Brunswick 1931-1935. That means part of the recordings belong to Universal and part of it belongs to Sony.
