FS/ Roy Eldridge Mosaic set Mint

I recomend this set. If only for the session with Benny Carter. Nothing wrong with the collaborations with Dizzy either. -
Upcoming Lucky Thompson Select tracklisting
miles65 replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Coleman Hawkins box will be a no brainer. Would love a Lucky Thompson Box (select or big box) any year . Chick Webb/Ella Fitzgerald box glad that will be 2012, financialy speaking. -
Of the 10 names to choose from I like Ben Webster most folowed by Chu Berry and Dexter Gordon. Not on the list: Don Byas, Stan Getz, Lucky Thompson, Paul Gonsalves. But me liking these players does not mean they are influencial. I read somewhere that at music schools saxophone pupils have to learn Gonsalves solo's by heart.

EU music recordings copyright to be extended to 70 years
miles65 replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The European Commission who issued the directive was not democratically elected, as no European government is in a parliamentary system, but the directive was approved by the European Parliament, wchich was democratically elected. Besides, the directive will have to be turned into legislation by all national parliaments of the EU member states, which are all democratically elected. Yes your right. It won't be easy to reverse this directive. I don't think it will play even a minor role in the next election for the European Parliament. But I'll stop here discussing Europian Union and democracy that would belong in the Politics section. -
EU music recordings copyright to be extended to 70 years
miles65 replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Why is it a bizarre decision? Because it will affect Hep too? I would name it bizarre because it's retroactive. Products that have been on the market legaly for years now become illegal. If record companies would keep their entire catalogue in stock then I wouldn't object. -

Question: Who voted for the people who took that decision? Right answer: Nobody -
The Complete Felsted Mainstream Collection
miles65 replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Sorry -- don't have strong memories of it. I do very much like the "The Big Sound" date on Verve and the RCA Hodges-Strayhorn big band album, plus the Hodges 1956-61 small-group things that Granz recorded and that came out in a Mosaic box. The The Big Sound date is included in the Hodges 1956-1961 Mosaic set. Talk about failing memory -- I bought "The Big Sound" separately a good many years after I bought the Mosaic set. From 'The Big Sound' only the second session of September 3, 1957 is on the Mosaic Set. The sessions of June 26, 1957 and the first session of September 3 1957 are big band recordings and thus not included on this small groups set. So you were right to buy the Fresh Sound. -
Yes it has a 24 page booklet.

Thanks all of you. I had a very nice day and just had a very good meal (here it is 10:40 PM). Now listening to Isham Jones on Timeless Historical.

The Jazz Oracle "Jelly Roll" Morton is not on the market yet but there is already an announcement for a next one. http://www.worldsrecords.com/cgi-bin/storeR.cgi?specific=itemcode&phrase=72656 The Merritt Brunies sides were issued last year on Retrieval sandwiched between a lot of recordings already available on Timeless Historical. The newest Jazz Oracle has all of them plus some tracks from New Orleans that have not been on CD before. Like the Scranton Sirens Orchestra. The Red Nichols sets have arrived safely. :)

Hip-o now has the studio version of Flamingo as a free MP3 download. Downloading doesn't work in Firefox but it works in Internet Explorer. -
I think he's one of the best with Ted Kendall and Nick Dellow to name a few of the great sound restorers. For a partial list of Hans Eekhoff's work I refer to post 43 in the Jazz Oracle tread.

Well how about the 4 Ragtime to jazz volumes on Timeless. I find this stuff fascinating. I am looking forward to the Jazz Oracle collecting all early Jelly Roll Morton Band recordings. The Retrieval solo piano disc and the JSP Victor set are not to be missed either.

Were Fats Waller and Duke Ellington friends at all???
miles65 replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Mark Tucker writes in Duke Ellington The Early Years page 95 "He had become friendly with Willie "The Lion" SMITH, James P. Johnson, Fats Waller and other musicians whom he had met at clubs and jam sessions. So friendly not friends Fats is named a number of times buit always as being similar in piano style and once as a tutor to Ellington. Tucker´s book follows Ellington upto his openingnight at the Cotton Club -

Once in a while I wonder about Bozy White's Bunny Berigan Bio/Disco. Today I found this on http://www.jazz-book.com/news.html "White, Bozy: Bunny Berigan bio-discography. This project has made further progress. To be published in 2 volumes later this year. " I hope this comes true. It would be a fitting hommage to both Bunny and Bozy
