  1. Thanks Remco. You are right about the EU copyright rule (now 70 years, by the way, for recordings that weren't yet in the public domain when the rule was changed in the EU). Which CDs have those 6 instrumental tracks? Either Louis Armstrong Volume V Louis In New York (2 takes of After You've Gone) and Louis Armstrong Volume 6 St.Louis Blues (1 take of I Ain't Got Nobody, 1 of Dallas Blues and 2 of St. Louis Blues) both on Columbia Jazz Masterpieces Or Louis Armstrong Volume 1 1926-1935 the alternative takes in chronological oreder.Neatwork RP 2020 wich has all 6.
  2. You are right Hans. I should have made clear that was not comparing box sets/series with each other but with Rust and Lord's discographies. The missing 6 instrumental takes were made after March 1929 the cut off date of the Sony set and there fore not missing. The JSP set ends April 5, 1930. To me that means they are missing from this set. JSP is not to blame since those takes were first issued in 1990/1991. I believe the 50 year copyright rule starts when works are published not when recored. If so and if John R.T. Davies had acces to these takes he couldn't have used them. The Brunswick sessions. There is nothing wrong with you eyes. What I wanted to make clear is that if Sony leased two Brunswick sessions for their Hot Five/Hot Seven set they might lease all four sessions for their new set. This something I hope for but is not very likely to happen.
  3. louis Armstrong 1925-1933 on CD part 2. JSP The Hot Five and Hot Seven Box misses the 6 later discovered instrumentals The Big Band 2 CD set miss 4 alternate takes. They are all on Neatwork RP2020 Louis Armstrong vol. 1 1926-1935 (wich misses 6 Victor alternates) Brunswick Louis recorded four sessions for Brunswick as sideman: May 26, 1926 Erskine Tate's Vendome Orchestra Static Strut Stomp Off Let's go (2 takes) May 26, 1926 Lil's Hot Shots Georgia Bo Bo Drop That Sack (2 takes) April 21, 1927 Jimmy Bertrand's Washboard Wizards Easy Come Easy Go Blues Blues Stampede I'm Goin' Huntin' If You Wanna Be My Sugar Papa (You Gotta Be Sweet To Me) April 22, 1927 Johnny Dodd's Black Bottom Stompers Weary Blues New Orleans Stomp Wild Man Blues (2 takes) Melancholy (2 takes) Frog DGF39 New Orleans Stomp misses the Jimmy Bertrand session
  4. Believe it or not but if it's done right this wil be the only series/set that will be complete and available The Integrale misses one take of 'I can't give you anything but love'. Chant du monde leaves out a number of takes Masters of Jazz never got that far Classics/Neatwork are no longer available. Essential Jazz Classics stops mid 1929 (But this set contains all four Brunswick sessions) I just wonder how they will fill 10 CD's? If I counted correctly I come to 177 tracks (including the Carroll Dickerson session). This could be the division over the CD's: 1925-1926 24 tracks 1927 21 1928 21 1929 24 1930 21 1931 20 1932 20 1933 26 That would account for 8 CD's. If Sony leases the Brunswick sessions from Universal like they did on the 'The Complete Hot Five and Hot Seven Recordings' set there would be 9 CD's Will I buy this set? That depends on several factors: Sound restoration Is it realy complete Is it Chronological Do they leave out the singers sessions We'll have to wait and see.
  5. To be exact: Louis Armstrong and the Blues Singers 1924-1930. It is not Charly but Affinity.
  6. I would have liked the partialy unissued September 18th, 1965 Monterey performance to be included. 1. The Arts Of Tatum And Freddie Webster (unissued) 2. Don't Let It Happen Here (issued on Malpaso/Warner Bros. 9-46703-2 [CD] Monterey Jazz Festival 40 legendary years.) 3. They Trespass The Land Of The Sacred Sioux (issued on Eastcoasting ECEP-1) 4. When The Saints Go Marching In (unissued) Sent an email to Mosaic to inquire about that. The Eastcoasting EP was issued by Sue. So she must have acces to this recording.
  7. Mosiac just anounced the following Charles Mingus The Jazz Workshop Concerts 1964-65 http://www.mosaicrecords.com/prodinfo.asp?number=253-MD-CD.
  8. I don't think there ever was a booklet with it. I've made up my own discography for it if anyone wants one. Perhaps not, though there is a bit of extra space in the box that looks like it might have held a booklet. My set has a 32 page booklet with notes by Alun Morgan + disco
  9. I don't have a cell phone and I don't want one but if I would want one I would like the St. Louis Blues as a ringtone.
  10. The Mosaic mail says as subject: last chance. In the mail and on the Website mosiac says running low.
  11. The Classic Argo, Emarcy & Verve Small Group Buddy Rich Sessions is gone.
  12. With the arrival of Coleman Hawkins: 57 big boxes 7 selects 7 singles And I also have the contents of 17 sets in an other form like the Miles Davis sets.
  13. set #594 just arrived safely. Disc 1 spinning :D
  14. The Onzy Matthews sellect has gone.
  15. Got it. Thanks again. If it's all pretty much on other Mosaics I'm not bothered by this. This set covers 'only' the part where Hawkins solo's on Hendersons recordings. But there is much more. The combined Classics and Neatwork CD's amount to 19. Henderson recorded for a large number of labels. Not all of them are owned by Sony/BMG but a lot are. I have no idea how big a big Henderson set would be. IMO a big Mosaic Henderson would be very interesting and 7 CD's would probably not enough. But Hans points out this is not to be.
  16. Got mail to. Also orded the MJQ and Joe Pass.
  17. Just got an email from Mosaic stating the set is in production and reay to go end of May early June. :)
  18. Got an email today from Mosaic that DVD's from series 6 are now also available as single DVD's.
  19. Last week I bought 3 sets second hand: The Complete Edmond Hall/James P. Johnson/Vic Dickenson Blue Note Sesion of wich I'm playing disc III now. Very fine music. The Complete Illinois Jacquet 1945-50 sessions (3 discs still sealed) The Complete Verve recordings of the Teddy Wilson Trio
  20. The Lester Young/Count Basie set is sold out.
  21. Buddy Rich, Onzy Matthews and the Dave Liebman/Richie Beirach select moved to last change.
  22. Fremeaux just announced vol. 11: Jack-Armstrong Blues 1944-1945. This volume ends at October, 31st 1945 Coca Cola Spotlight Band Broadcast # 915

    Jazz Oracle

Comments on the latest Jazz Oracle issues: The Red Nichols CD's imo are great. Whether you like the early chamber music with Miff Mole and Jimmy Dorsey or the later tracks with Benny Goodman and Jack Teagarden. Red got a lot of bad press and I think it's important his music has been reissued properly because now everyone can judge these recordings for them selfes instead of relying on the opinion of others. Jelly Roll Morton's early band recordings are now for the first time reissued on a very high standard. Merritt Brunies. This CD makes more sense to me than the Retrieval issue. I refer to my earlier post. Jimmy Joy this a very good but not a well known band. A few tracks have been on Timeless Historical. This issue puts together for the first time the Golden and Okeh recordings plus a selection of Brunswicks. Newly announced: Frank Guarente/Americans in Europe. Combining Frank Guarente's session in Zürich September 1926 and the New Yorkers Tanzorchester sessions in Berlin 1927. This band includes Danny Polo.
