  1. Why won't the MJQ tracks on 'A quartet is a quartet' be on the set? They were recorded in 1963. Part of that album is by other quartets. No MJQ so no need to include them. Sorry, I don't understand what you mean. One side of the LP, 4 tracks, are by he MJQ. Why wouldn't they be included. I don't expect the tracks by the Quartetto de Milano and the Hungarian Gypsy Quartet to be included but I do expect the tracks by the MJQ to be included. You probably misread the original statement it says "...1/2 of Quartet is a Quartet will not be included." I think that means the MJQ 1/2 will be included. Sorry if my answer led to confusion.
  2. Jazz Dialogue and 1/2 of Quartet is a Quartet will not be included. No Sun in Venice is a.k.a One Never Knows Why won't the MJQ tracks on 'A quartet is a quartet' be on the set? They were recorded in 1963. Part of that album is by other quartets. No MJQ so no need to include them.
  3. Nor mine. This is a good set. Yeah, I was a drummer and maybe I enjoy the drumming aspects a bit more than others may, but there is much swinging jazz here to get excited about. I truly like this eet more than I expected to, and am glad I've had it a few years. I second this. I like it very much and 'm glad I have it. It's on running low now together with the Johnny Smith set. Sorry for mixing up Jimmy and Johnny. There is no Jimmy Smith set that could go out of print.
  4. I have about half of the music from this set in a rather haphazard way so I think I'll get this one. What I don't get is the 1964 cut off date. Half the "Porgy and Bess" album was recorded in in 1965 (unless the disco's are wrong). With the album "Jazz Dialogue" also from 1965 it would make more sense to make 1965 the cut off date. Especially considering the next Atalantic Studio album "Plastic Dreams" is from 1971. So maybe an 8th disc would be in order. That would make room for the alternate takes as well.
  5. Since it arrived I played the Ellington set three times in a row. Even after knowing most of the music at least ten years it was like new. It won't be far from my CD player for a long time. Now it's Onzy Matthews Select disc 2. I realy like the big bands from that period.
  6. about 3700 CD's 400 LP's The most interesting are on my display wall. 300 45's/EP's 200 78's All jazz All in my music room. Some pictures taken during recent modernization of my appartment. Not all was in it's right place at that stage.
  7. How about Ella Fitz & The Geralds? This was a band in Holland 30 years ago.
  8. My favorite is the session with Benny Carter. Just reissued on the Poll Winners label Roy Eldridge & Benny Carter Urbane Jazz. It has all the previously unissued material copied from the Mosaic wich are missing on the Verve issue Benny Carter New Jazz Sounds The Urbane Sessions. Remco
  9. Yes it is. I already did suggest it. Scott wrote me "It would have to wait until the 30s set has been out for a while as we dont like to saturate our catalog". Please make the suggestion the more support it gets might get it on the to-do-list. There are plenty of takes on labels like Up-to-date and unissued takes mentioned in the New DESOR. That would make this set more than a straight reissue of (well)known material. Remco
  10. Yes this is the one to get, togheter with the small band set. Ellington had a long recording career with more highs than lows. The 40's Victors are a very important chapter in Ellingtonia. But don't knock the 1956-1962 Columbia period. Not all 24 albums are equaly important but again the highs outnumber the lows. Mind you you're still in the Himelayas. Personal favorites: Such Sweet Thunder, Ellington Indigo's, Jazz Party, The Cosmic Scene, Anatomy Of A Murder, Blues In Orbit. Not so keen on: Dance To The Duke, All American In Jazz. For me personaly if Mosaic desides to do more Ellington I would like the Okeh/Pathé/Plaza 25-31 period first, then Columbia 47-52 and then Columbia 56-62 (spread over several sets). The Victors should always be available, but they have been available (almost)complete in the big RCA box. The other periodes have not. From the current Mosaics you mention I also have the Armstrong, Goodman, Shaw and Reinhardt sets. My favorites are the Shaw and Goodman sets. Great as it is Reinhardts music is also available elsewere. I miss that extra special feeling I have with the other sets. The Armstrong is great to have. The music is better than expected but I liesten to small chunks at a time. But then how many people would play 20 or more 78 sides by the same artist in a row when those records came on the market? Remco
  11. I had the same problem. My discs survived. One had a manufacture mistake. Waiting for the replacement of disc XI. Remco
  12. The Ellington Bigband Set disc V. Just a few highlights: Porto Rican Chaos, Cotton, Reminiscing In Tempo and Echoes Of Harlem
  13. That's a pity because then you won't have the Wolverine recordings, The Victor session with 'I'll be a friend with "pleasure"', Not Goldkette's 'Clementine' (available at the Red Hot Jazz Archive http://www.redhotjazz.com/goldo.html and scroll down recordings are in alphabetical order) or any of the Paul Whiteman recordings. You don't need them all but I wouldn't like to miss 'Lonley Melody'. Also available at the Red Hot Jazz Archive http://www.redhotjazz.com/pwo.html Don't get fooled by the sound quality there. If you decide you wan't it all after all the there is Bix Restored vol. 1 to 5 (13 CD's in all)
  14. I never really wanted it. But now it's gone I kinda do.... You'll regret it maybe not today or tomorrow but soon and for the rest of your life...
  15. Which carrier delivered the set, UPS, FedEx or TNT? UPS
  16. Set #840 arrived today. No import duties. Playing disc # 4 now great sound. Celebrating early Christmas with a bottle of red Burgondy A small note. On the French "L'album Hot Vingt Grands Succès De Duke Ellington" the cover photo is also used. There it has an more oblong shape. On the left both trombone payers are visible and Greers drumset as well. Greer himself is not visible. On the right only a small strip is missing. Maybe there is an even larger version of this photo with the complete orchestra. Would be nice as a poster. Unfortunately I don't have a scanner so I can share this version of the photo.
  17. Anybody else get a shipping confirmation yet who ordered before last Friday? I got the "24-48 hours" e-mail last Friday, but no shipping notice yet...hoping that it goes out tomorrow. received my 24-48hr shipping confirmation on the 11th (ordered on Oct 18) Didn't realise that an actual shipping notice email follows that - have gone through my previous order emails & have never received a second email Maybe that doesn't happen to international orders? Just got shipping confirmation from 3PL Worldwide the new handler for Mosaic. With UPS tracking #. So it also goes for international orders. Remco
  18. My mail said that as well. But it is still a shipping confirmation. Remco
  19. I don't know if there is a connection but I ordered the first day the set was up for pre order and I just got a shipping confirmation for my set. No mention of the set #. I'm not going to ask. They have other things on there mind right now.
  20. The Ellington set is already on backorder. Ken Steiner reports on the Duke-Lym list: "Steven Lasker has told me that Mosaic told him that the first 1,000 orders have just been shipped! Happy holidays! Ken"
  21. 2 short notes I got an email from Mosaic announcing that they expect shipping the set Friday the 10th. Sjef Hoefsmit editor of the DEMS bulletin published an report on the new set based on a early copy of the set. You kan find DEMS bulltin here http://www.depanorama.net/dems/ klik on 1. news under the header Latest Issue and scroll down to Great News. After that read the whole bulletin. It's always very interesting.
  22. Interesting...my copy doesn't have that "JazzBluesClub" printing under Duke's chin. Are there different editions of it, I wonder? My spine info is: ORIGINAL MASTERS 88697302362 RCAVictor COLUMBIA The best of Duke Ellington (1932-1939) SONY/BMG I wonder if the pictured version differs, Jazzbo? That text is superimposed by the Jazz Blues Club site and has nothing to do with the CD set it self.
  23. They are from March 1930, and the Mosaic is: DUKE ELLINGTON: THE COMPLETE 1932-1940 BRUNSWICK, COLUMBIA AND MASTER RECORDINGS. Whether those titles are, or are not, Columbia masters, they're too early. I am aware of that, all of the titles in that list of 47 are before 1932. So is the difference that those 47 are available to Columbia but the Hit of the Week 2 are not? Hit Of The Week records were issued during 1930-1932 by Durium. They were cardboard single sided records sold only at newsstands at 15c. Sony (OkeH, Columbia, Plaza, ARC etc.) had nothing to do with it. Boardmember Durium has a website devoted to these records. www.durium.opweb.nl/how.htm He also wrote the booklets with the Archeophone issues The Complete Hit Of The Week Recordings vol. 1, 2, 3. Vol. 4 still to come I hope. Vol. 1 has the Ellington sides Vol. 2 has the extremly rare Eva Taylor side "De Trouble I've Seen"
