  1. My mail said that as well. But it is still a shipping confirmation. Remco
  2. I don't know if there is a connection but I ordered the first day the set was up for pre order and I just got a shipping confirmation for my set. No mention of the set #. I'm not going to ask. They have other things on there mind right now.
  3. The Ellington set is already on backorder. Ken Steiner reports on the Duke-Lym list: "Steven Lasker has told me that Mosaic told him that the first 1,000 orders have just been shipped! Happy holidays! Ken"
  4. 2 short notes I got an email from Mosaic announcing that they expect shipping the set Friday the 10th. Sjef Hoefsmit editor of the DEMS bulletin published an report on the new set based on a early copy of the set. You kan find DEMS bulltin here http://www.depanorama.net/dems/ klik on 1. news under the header Latest Issue and scroll down to Great News. After that read the whole bulletin. It's always very interesting.
  5. Interesting...my copy doesn't have that "JazzBluesClub" printing under Duke's chin. Are there different editions of it, I wonder? My spine info is: ORIGINAL MASTERS 88697302362 RCAVictor COLUMBIA The best of Duke Ellington (1932-1939) SONY/BMG I wonder if the pictured version differs, Jazzbo? That text is superimposed by the Jazz Blues Club site and has nothing to do with the CD set it self.
  6. They are from March 1930, and the Mosaic is: DUKE ELLINGTON: THE COMPLETE 1932-1940 BRUNSWICK, COLUMBIA AND MASTER RECORDINGS. Whether those titles are, or are not, Columbia masters, they're too early. I am aware of that, all of the titles in that list of 47 are before 1932. So is the difference that those 47 are available to Columbia but the Hit of the Week 2 are not? Hit Of The Week records were issued during 1930-1932 by Durium. They were cardboard single sided records sold only at newsstands at 15c. Sony (OkeH, Columbia, Plaza, ARC etc.) had nothing to do with it. Boardmember Durium has a website devoted to these records. www.durium.opweb.nl/how.htm He also wrote the booklets with the Archeophone issues The Complete Hit Of The Week Recordings vol. 1, 2, 3. Vol. 4 still to come I hope. Vol. 1 has the Ellington sides Vol. 2 has the extremly rare Eva Taylor side "De Trouble I've Seen"

I'm So In Love With You These are the tracks wich with the 50 on "The Okeh Ellington" add up to the 97 wich would make a very nice 4 CD set. All info from The New Desor.
  8. I think Columbia did issue that material, eventually. St. James Infirmary and Sing You Sinners, yes? I see Columbia P14302 as release numbers for them (not as Duke but as Harlem hot-something-or-other). Should be in the Mosaic, then... Duke recorded St. James Infirmary for Plaza January 29, 1930 for Plaza as "The Ten Black Berries". He did not record Sing You Sinners for Sony. The recording for Hit Of The Week was in March 1930 as "Harlem Hot Chocolates". St. James Infirmary and Sing You Sinners. St. James is a different recording. I'm perplexed at the Columbia P14302 containg this track. But even if they were recorded for Sony they are pre 1932 so they would never make the upcoming set.
  9. I've got a couple of cuts from the "Hit of the Week" label. Is this label included in your 47 missing tracks or are you just including those owned by Sony? No the "Hit Of The Week" recordings are not owned by Sony. They were produced by Durium. I have no idea who owns the rights to these recordings today. You can read all about this label in the 3 Archeophone releases (www.archeophone.com) "The Complete Hit Of The Week recordings" (vol. 4 still to come?).
  10. Seeing is Believing: Fresh Sound sells the Quincy Jones Mosaic set: http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/new_releases I couldn't believe at first it but it's realy on the Fresh Sound site.
  11. My favorite Fats Waller boxes are the first two. Box 2 has the Ted Lewis session. Your life is not complete until you heard "Egyptian Ella". There's plenty to enjoy on the other boxes as well. Box 3 starts with "African Ripples" and "Clothes Line Ballet". To name just 2 tracks I like very much.
  12. 1932-1940 Ellington recordings not on the 2 Mosaic sets or the RCA big box. The 13 July, 1933, London Decca session Classics 637 "Duke Ellington And His Orchestra 1933" The 14 July, 1933, A Souvenir Of Duke Ellington recording on the same classics The alternate takes of both sessions are on: Neatwork RP 2033 "Duke Ellington Volume 4 (1933-1936)The Alternative Takes in Chronological Order". The complete Decca Session is also on Jazz Unlimited "The British Connexion". April 23 1934 "My Old Flame" sung by Mae West with Duke Ellington And His Orchestra. Classics 647 "Duke Ellington And His Orchestra 1933-1935" This was a soundtrack recording and not a commercial issue. February 26, 1934 The two versions of Ebony Rhapsody on "The Best Of Duke Ellington 1932-1939" 4 CD set. Also soundtrack recordings and not commercial. February 24, 1938 Duke Ellington solo "I'v got to be a rug cutter". Not a commercial recording. It is on L'Histoire Du jazz Vocal issued by Chant Du Monde. There are many more soundtrack recordings but those were never intended for commercial issue. About the pre 1932 Sony owned recordings: Duke recorded a lot for labels that were then indepedent labels. Okeh, Columbia, Pathé, Plaza (with a number of labels)etc. merged in to what eventualy became Columbia. There are in total 97 takes. 50 of them from Okeh/Columbia are on "The Okeh Ellington" The remaing 47 tracks (5 of them are Okeh/Columbia alternate takes the rest are Pathé and Plaza) have never been officialy reissued. For more details see post 88.
  13. Thanks Chuck. I don't know how I missed these. Seems like he was under contract to other labels when he made these? Or were they recorded in between? Or maybe under a different name? All of the above? None of the above?! gregmo Henderson does not seem to have had long recording contracts. In 1934 there are 3 Decca Sessions in a row. In 1936 3 Victor sessions. And in 1937/1938 6 sessions in a row for Vocalion. In the 20's it is a patch work. Henderson recorded a lot for a lot of labels. I stopped counting at 15.
  14. You mean that small set that went OOP so fast? I won't pay those 70$ or so that you'd need to shelve out these days to get hold of it, but it's still a bit of a drag then! Yes, that's the one. Anybody know whether that version of "Ebony Rhapsody" is exclusive to that set? The Ebony Rhapsody material in this box seems to be an "exclusive". I have never encountered it elsewhere. These Ebony Rhapsody recordings were recorded (but not used) for the movie "Murder At The Vaneties". Though I'm very happy having them on CD I never understood what they are doing on a "Best Of CD" set. For more information see DEMS bulletin 03/2 and 03/3
  15. At my place it will be Chrismas the day the set arrives.
  16. The Ellington 1932-1940 Set is up for pre order. The Ella Fitzgerald-Duke Ellington Cote D´Azur 3 LP set as well.
  17. If you don't already have it get the "Jazz Scene" 2 CD set. Great music. Carney, Bird, Hawkins (Picasso) various modern big bands etc. Beautiful replica of collectors item from the 40's. Remco
  18. 1925-1940 Columbia was on 15 2 LP sets. Not complete but still...
  19. It is now on the Storyville web site (www.storyvillerecords.com/Default.aspx) No track listing so far but it includes a 1933 newsreel item on Lenox Avenue and has a glimpse of Duke. Remco
  20. If I counted right and kept track of all unissued takes there will be 251 tracks. Overview of the complete as possible of Duke Ellington's 1924-1946 studio recordings. Earliest Ellington 1924-1926 The Blu Disc, Up-to-date, Paramount and Gennett recordings are on Masters Of Jazz vol. 1 Brunswick/Vocalion 1926-1931 Early Ellington The Complete Brunswick and Vocalion Recordings of Duke Ellington 1926-1931 3 CD set Discovered later and therefore not included: 27772-B Tishomingo Blues on Jazz Oracle 8047 A Gift From The President E31372 Office Take Oklahoma Stomp unissued Pathé, Banner, Cameo Perfect, Romeo, Okeh and Columbia 1925-1931 There has never been a complete reissue of this Sony owned material. But 108079-1 East St. Louis Toodle-oo is missing. It is on Masters Of Jazz Volume 3. Masters Of Jazz also includes movie soundtracks that explains why MoJ has one CD more. Based on The New Duke Ellington Story On Records (New Desor) by Luciano Massagli and Giovanni M. Volonté, The New Desor Correction sheets (www.depanorama.net/desor/index.htm), articles in The Duke Ellington Music Society Bulletin edited by Sjef Hoefsmit (www.depanorama.net/dems/) and my own collection.
  21. Hello, When collecting Armstrong there are no easy answers. Maybe this can be of help. There is no problem with Armstrong/Oliver. You can choose either the Retrieval or the Off The Record CD sets or the Integrale. Armstrong Henderson: The Integrale leaves out a 16 tracks where Armstrong does not solo or where the solo is more or less the same. Two takes of "How Come You Do Me Like You Do?" are incomplete. Forte F380001/2/3 "Louis Armstrong The Complete Recordings Including All Known Alternate Takes 1924-1925" contains all takes. Safe one take of 'Naughty Man' that was dicovered later. It was included in Jazz Oracle BDW8047 "A Gift From The President". Louis And The Blues Singers: The Integrale leaves out 11 tracks/takes. More complete is the Affinity AFS 1018-6 6 CD box "Louis and Blues Singers". But this box leaves out 2 tracks by Coot Grant because it might be Joe Smith instead of Armstrong. They are included on the Integrale. Armstrong/Clarence Williams and Red Onion Jazz Babies. There is no seperate issue of these sides. They would fit on one CD (hint). They are all on the Integrale. The Clarence Williams sides are also on Classics 679 "Clarence Williams 1921-1924" and 695 "Clarence Williams 1924-1926". The Red Onion Jazz Babies on Classics 24 "Complentary Tracks" Armstrong/Johnny Dodds on Brunswick. There a four sessions. The Integrale has them all complete. Frog DGF39 "New Orleans Stomp" leaves out the Jimmy Bertrand session. It is included on Classics 603 "Johnny Dodds 1927" Louis own recordings: The Integrale leaves out the alternate take of "I Can't Give You Anything But Love". This is included on the JSP Armstrong Hot 5 Hot 7 set. Also on the Columbia complete hot 5 hot 7 set. If you don't want to buy a 4 CD set just for one track there is Neatwork RP2020 "Louis Armstrong vol. 1 (1926-1935)". An essestial disc if you have the Classics covering this period. Louis on Victor: The Complete RCA Victor recording and the Integrale both are complete. Six "new" takes are not on the Neatwork issue. Louis on Decca. The Integrale omits the newly issued takes included on the Mosaic set. Remco
  22. CBS France issued in 1984 three LP's with rare and unissued tracks on two double LP's and one single LP under the title "Duke 56/62". Vol. 1 (CBS 88653) covers 1956-1959 Vol. 2 (CBS 88654) covers 1959-1962 Vol. 3 (CBS 26306) The Ellington Orchestra with various vocalists. Not all of the tracks made it to CD (yet). Remco
  23. Against my nature I'm not to optimistic. With Classics/Neatwork gone the chances of getting a 'complete' Tommy Dorsey or Harry James (To name two artists whos series will not be finished) became highly improbable. Not that I think that all their output is of great importance as jazz but through Classics you could hear and judge for yourself. Since the death of John R.T. Davies the number of issues by labels like Jazz Oracle has gone down. Going through Rust there is still enough matrial not reissued since the 78 era. Remco
  24. Hello, You do not miss "Yes I'm in the barrel". Neither is the disc defective. The missing track is "Sunshine Baby". Fremeaux included it in vol. 4 at the end of disc 1. Remco
  25. Hello After reading this forum for some time now my imput. Mosaic could still do a lot of Ellington: The 1925-1931 Sony owned Pathé, Okeh, Romeo, Cameo, Plaza recordings have never been reissued completly. Two takes are still unreissued. It would make a 4 CD set. The Columbia 1947-1952 period. The so called complete 5 cd series is far from complete. With all unissued takes and takes issued on unlicensed labels a complete set would also amount to 11 CD's. There is still a lot of material from the 3 56/62 lp's not on CD and together with mistakes made in the past (like the right take of Up and Down from Such Sweet Thunder) that could fill a Select. Reissue The complete Brunswick/Vocalion set including the later discoverd alternate of Tishomigo Blues and the still unissued take of Oklahoma Stomp. Remco
