    Ellington 2012

There were mixed reactions last time I know. It was my first Ellington conference and I had no reference point from previous conferences. Most lectures/talks (Bjarne Busk, Steven Lasker, Earl Okin to name a few that spring to mind)were interesting I thought. And I was happy to meet a number of people I only knew from the Internet. I'll be glad to meet them again. And I loved the bands playing Ellington's music live. Off course some were better than others but I liked them being live. Harmony in Harlem was my favorite. I didn't care much for Michael Garrick's own stuff.

    Jazz Oracle

Finaly Red Nichols gets his due. 1926-1932 Red Nichols recorded with his Five Pennies much for Brunswick. His band features many greats: Miff Mole, Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman and Jack Teagarden to name but a few. Later Red was put down by a lot of players. Pee Wee Russel said he ran his band like Himmler ran the Gestapo. During the LP reissue era there was no complete Five Pennies series. He did better in the CD era (list not complete just an overview): 1997 Jazz Oracle issues Red Nichols on Edison 1998 Retrieval issues Red Nichols & Miff Mole 1925-1927 1998 Frog issues Miff Mole vol. 1 and 2. 2001 Jazz Oracle issues Louisiana Rhythm Kings 2001-2008 Classics issues 6 CD's of Red Nichols (2 CD's short of getting to 1932) 2004 Jazz Oracle issues The Read Heads 1925-27 3 CD set 2006 On the the Bix Beiderbecke site a 7 CD Mosaic set Red Nichols and the Five Pennies announced. Track listing reveals that there are no unissued takes but a number of alternates issued only in Canada wich were previously unknown. Producers: Jeff Healey and Dr. Robert Litwak. Notes by Richard Sudhalter. This set would only contain Universal owned recordings. 2008 Jeff Healey and Richard Sudhalter die. 2010 When I asked Scott Wenzel about the set he replied there was copyright BS. 2011 Worldsrecords announces 3 Jazz Oracle 3 CD sets Red Nichols Complete New York Brunswick Sessions. This series will include both the Universal and Sony owned recordings. The notes are by Richard Sudhalter. As bonus tracks are included the Victors not included in the two Frog Miff Mole issues, the Harmony Irving Brodsky session and a track missing from the IAJRC issue of Radio transcriptions. For full track listing see the Worldsrecords site. This is the first Jazz Oracle issue since 2009
  6. Hello,

I choose the name Stompy Jones beacause it's a Duke Ellington song and I needed a name. Someone already uses Monk Bought Lunch. Duke is my main interest in music. Thanks for the message.

  7. The Nostalgia Arts CD's have a number (but not all) of the alternate takes. They are just not on the same CD as the master takes. Chronology was not the greatest concern of this series. I don't think Mosaic could have done this set because most of it was recorded for Brunswick 1931-1935. That means part of the recordings belong to Universal and part of it belongs to Sony.
  8. I'm going to do that as well. But I'll postpone buying this set until the Lunceford is ready for pre ordering.
  9. When you consider that Mosaic did a replacement of one of the discs in the Lionel Hampton set (wrong track) and that Hep replaced an Artie Shaw disc (track missing) it is strange that Universal won't replace the faulty Stan Getz disc. On the other hand Sony did not replace the Duke Ellington "Such Sweet Thunder" 1999 release when it was discovered that a wrong take of "Up and Down, Up and Down" was used. There must be a lesson in this somewhere
  10. The "A Duke Ellington Panorama" site (http://www.depanorama.net/) has a discographical section. The most complete disco of Duke Ellington is Luciano Massagli - Giovanni Volonté "The New Desor" (Desor = Duke Ellington Story On Records). Published in 1999. Updates to this book are made available 3 times a year on the NDesor section of the Ellington Panorama site. I don't know if it is still available somewhere. I got it from Norbert Ruecker Jazz Books some years ago. It's no longer in his catalogue. Alternatives are: Eric Raben: Jazz Records 1942-1980 vol. 6 Duke Ellington W.E. Timner: Ellingtonia The Recorded Music of Duke Ellington and His Sidemen (Scarecrow Press 2007 5th edition).
  11. How complete are the sessions in that box? Are there tracks left out, or do you get everything that was recorded? (And are there any good Cole discographies online that make it easier to piece together this info myself?) As far as I can check all Universal owned sessions are there: Decca, Keynote and Verve including alt takes. The Decca sessions include the Eddie Cole Solid Swingers session from 1936. It was Eddie's singing they were trying to promote back then...
  12. I have Jazz Beat 527 'The Complete Ellington Indigo's' and I don't think they had acces to the original tapes. If you had you would mention this. No bad sound to my ears.
  13. Me as well.
  14. Alonzo Levister 'Manhattan Melodrama' Debut DEB 125. Maybe there could be a set The Complete Debut Recordings Without Charles Mingus
  15. I like to hear jazz from all ages and places. Apart from the USA I have compilations of historic recordings from the UK, France, Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Italy, Spain, Austria, Switserland and Australia. One white spot on the map was filled last weekend when I found 7 LP's from a series named 'Anthology of Sovjet Jazz' in a second hand record shop. They were 2,50 Euro per lp. The series name and the lp title are the only English on the cover of 6 of the lp's. One has the artist names and the song titles also in English. From a list wich seems to be an "also in this series" I came to the conclusion that there are 8 LP's in this series. The titles of my 7 lp's are: The First Steps I'm Blue With Out You A Chance Meeting Fall In Love With Me Dancing Fingers Sing For Me Hitparade A collegue of mine who comes from Russia agreed to translate the songtitels and artits names for me.
  16. Still waiting for my set to arrive... #1 is a minor issue, but #2 and #3 sound rather annoying to me! Too bad if it's so (not doubting your findings!) - quality control costs too much in these cheapo times of ours, I assume... I didn't buy this set yet but according to the tracklisting on Amazon "I don't mean a thing" is on disc 2 track 9 and on disc 3 track 1. Also according to to Amazon (fwiw) the playingtime of Flamingo on the Quintet set is 7:25 and on At the Shrine 8:34. If it's the studio version with applause it's annoying if it's the Shrine version it's als annoying. You still need the Poll Winners edition of 'At The Shrine', wich has both versions, of Flamingo to be complete.
  17. The Bennie Green is gone to.
  18. Artie Shaw 1939-1940 Classics 1087 This CD has: 'I didn't know what time it was' with Helen Forrest, 'Frenesi' 'Gloomy Sunday', 'My Fantasy', 'Don't Fall Asleep' with Pauline Byrne, a singer I like very much. She seems to not have recorded more. I can't find any more info about her. 'Dreaming out loud' and 'Now we know' with Martha Tilton. And Artie Shaw plays clarinet.
  19. The Tal Farlow is now gone again.
  20. Mosaic has come up with a few Tal Farlow Sets and Bennie Green Selects. They are on last chance. If you want them hurry. I ordered the Tal Farlow.
  21. I just love Hawkins. The first recording of Hawkins I heard was 'Stardust' with Django and Grappelli on piano. Still a favorite of mine. Followed later by Fletcher Henderson's recording of 'The Stampede', The All-Star Jam Session with 'Crazy Rhythm'. The 78 Sw. 1 is one of my prized possesions. The 1944 session with Monk. 'The Man I love' from December 18, 1943. I could go on and on. Will 7 CD's be enough to do Hawkins justice?
  22. I ordered the Dizzy and the Hackett sets. No wife to put a shovel in my skull.
  23. Answer to my mail was that it must have been lost in the mail. The replacement they sent arrived today. Now find time to play the CD's
  24. I have my eye on the Dizzy Gillespie and the Bobby Hackett sets. Actualy this sale comes a month too soon for me but I just might squeeze one of them in. Allready in my collection: Oliver Nelson Woody Herman Charlie Parker Django Reinhardt Jack Teagarden I'm not too fond of Sarah and more a Verve than a Blue Note man so I give those sets a mis.
  25. I ordered the OP box on January, 25. UK to The Netherlands is mostley a week or so. But so far no OP box for me. Sellar gave me positive feedback though. Today I Sent Filmzone1 a mail asking were it is. Best transatlantic shipping ever: 4 days by Mosaic. Once I ordered a set Tuesday got it Saturday.
