There have been several of these on eBay in the past few months, and that price is about par for the course. I'm still kicking myself for passing on the copy I spotted on GEMM a few years ago for $200.

J&R Jazz Department Rapidly Shrinking
Dave Garrett replied to J Larsen's topic in Miscellaneous Music
J&R is currently on my shit list. I recently placed an order on their website for 6 RVGs. Got a receipt and shipping notice in short order, and figured I'd have the discs in hand quickly. Several days later, I received an empty padded manila envelope from them, containing an invoice but no CDs. The envelope was open, and after examining it there was absolutely no question that it had not been sealed properly when it was packed. I emailed them immediately, and after a week have received no response. Guess it's time to call my credit card company. -
Great Screensavers Of Our Time
Dave Garrett replied to Jim R's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
About ten years ago, I was working at a large company with the typical low-walled cube-farm floor plan. One of the women I worked with sat right next to a heavily-trafficked aisle with her large 21" monitor clearly visible to anyone that walked by. One day when almost everyone on the floor had gone to lunch except the two of us, I was sitting at my workstation when I heard her let out a loud scream followed by an urgent plea for me to come over and help her. She was in the middle of a contentious divorce, and it turns out her soon-to-be ex-husband had emailed her an executable file which she ill-advisedly clicked on. It didn't appear to do anything, so she turned her back and started doing something else; about five minutes later, she turned around to discover her screen saver had been changed to a huge photograph of a naked man with an impressive erection. At which point I heard the aforementioned scream. She was somewhat technically challenged, and had no idea how to banish Dude With Stiffy and get her old screensaver back. I helped her change it back, and I assume she thought twice about running unknown .EXEs from that day forward. -
His bandmates introduced him as "Rocky" when I saw him. It's indeed pronounced "rocky", and it came from a contraction of his first and middle names - ROger KYnard Erickson. The first Elevators album's a classic, but the second one, "Easter Everywhere", is their real masterpiece. All of the existing commercially available Elevators CDs suck, not to put too fine a point on it; there are various fan-traded needledrops from original mono and stereo LPs out there that are much better.

Miles Davis - Complete Montreux (20CD box)
Dave Garrett replied to Claude's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I got this set for $40-something sealed on eBay a couple of years ago after placing a lowball bid - I was absolutely sure I'd be outbid, and was shocked when I wasn't. I was even more shocked when it actually showed up, as I half suspected yet another eBay scam but was willing to gamble the money on the off chance it wasn't. Still haven't listened to the entire thing yet, but this thread is encouraging me to pull it off the shelf a give a few more of the discs a spin. -
One of my friends is a longtime church musician who's filled a variety of roles over the years from singing, to playing piano, to directing the choir at various Lutheran churches. As he put it to me once, "Bach just never had an off day." I think he'd wholeheartedly agree with the slightly different way you put it.

I remember when this show was on in prime time (1972 or so). It was mildly entertaining for the time, but with all the animated series that have come since I'm not so sure it has aged well. It might be interesting as a reflection of social/political topics (and stereotypes) of that period, but I really don't remember it being that good. I am interested in some of the other 70s TV shows, not so much this one. I thought I'd seen at least an episode or two of almost every obscure H-B cartoon series in existence, but I'd never even heard of this one before.

had a good burger lately?
Dave Garrett replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I was there a couple of times 20+ years ago. Yes, very very good, well worth visiting when in the LA area. Went there an extra time rather than try Fat Burger. I had chili fries on the 2nd visit. I've never managed to make it to Tommy's whenever I've visited LA, but I have trouble believing their burger could best the one that was offered at another longtime LA burger joint, the late, much-lamented Jayburger. Fresh bun, hunk of meat, slice of cheese, chili and a fried egg on top, presented in a carefully-folded piece of paper as if it were a work of art. Unbelievably good. Jay was a former employee of Tommy's who'd struck out on his own many years ago. First time we ever went to Jayburger, there was Jay chatting with customers new and old, quite dapper in his jacket and bowtie. Sadly, he got in a dispute with the landlord who owned the parking lot his stand was anchored in when the landlord wanted to redevelop the site, and Jayburger closed several years ago despite much vocal support from the community. Looks like it's changed hands and has reopened under new ownership and a new name (Sean's Burgers) since then. No idea what ever happened to Jay - he must be in his late eighties by now, if he's still alive. -

Absolutely agreed. Both Norton and McAfee suck when it comes to resource usage. For antivirus software, I'll second the earlier recommendation for AVG - I've been using the full version for a couple of years, and used the free version for several years prior to that. You set it up and forget about it - it just works, period. And it will automatically download and install updates to both the virus database and the application itself. AVG Free Advisor

Modern Rock - what do you like???
Dave Garrett replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I saw them play in Houston in 81 or 82, but I have to admit I never thought of checking YouTube for any footage of them. Clarke Blacker has a website covering all things Stick Men: Stick Men with Rayguns -
It has what's on the original LP, with a great mix. The US cd was awful, the first Japanese cd was adequate. It looks like just about every release of Agharta has slightly different contents in terms of running time - the US CD lists the following: Disc One Prelude (part one) 22:37 Prelude (part two) 10:31 Maiysha 12:20 Disc Two Interlude 26:50 Theme from Jack Johnson 25:16 The new DSD Japanese CD shows the following times in WinAmp (the tracks are listed differently on the sleeve, but this is what's actually on the discs): Disc One Prelude 32:29 Maiysha 12:20 Disc Two Interlude/Theme From Jack Johnson 51:36 And if you look at the Miles Ahead discography, it lists three different sets of running times for the Japanese LP and two earlier Japanese CDs (the latest CD isn't listed). Hopefully Sony will see fit to eventually release a box set with the complete concerts, but they'll have to get the On the Corner box out first.

It's been backordered at CD Universe since February, which is a pretty good indication that they're not going to be able to get any more copies. I preordered it and Pangaea there a couple of months before they were released, and as I recall both went to backorder status very quickly after they were released. Perhaps one of the Japanese vendors like Hiroshi Tanno might still be able to get it?

What Lon said - the 2006 DSD remaster in the mini-LP sleeve is the way to go. It is a different mastering than the earlier Japanese CD. Unfortunately, it appears to have gone out of print almost immediately after it was released last December, but I guess that's not so surprising since it was billed as a "limited edition". There's some info about the DSD remasters of both Agharta and Pangaea buried in these threads at the Steve Hoffman forum: http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthre...ghlight=agharta http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthre...ghlight=agharta and here's a pic of the disc in question:

Any DVD bonus material?? A secondary audio track with commentary from the director?? A "making of" documentary?? Modern reflection/commentary on Superfly's cultural impact?? Discussion of the soundtrack?? Anything?? I've got a VHS copy of a VHS original I rented probably 15 years ago, but would probably rent the DVD if there was any bonus stuff. Since no one responded to this, the DVD has quite a few extras on it. From a review at Amazon: Not to mention the fact that it's in the correct aspect ratio and looks fantastic, neither of which is probably true of your VHS dub. Definitely worth a rental.

Tuesday (4/24), but I'm with Big Al on this one - you need the box. You're going to wind up getting all of the individual discs if you just get a couple of them, and the box is cheaper than buying them separately. Check CD Universe and Amazon, you should be able to get it cheaper than Amoeba.

How old is your TV? And do you have a VCR hooked up in between the cable coming out of your wall and the TV? It sounds like the tuner in your TV (or in your VCR, if you have one hooked up like I described) might be starting to go bad. I had this happen to my previous TV, all of a sudden one day I couldn't get any cable channels at all. The cable tech came out and took one look at it and pronounced the TV tuner dead; I didn't believe him until he hooked up a small 9" portable he had with him for just such occasions and it worked fine. He said it's not uncommon for the lower-numbered channels to crap out on TV/VCR tuners, leaving the TV unable to receive cable signals since those signals are normally transmitted over channels 3 or 4. My workaround until I got another TV was to simply use the tuner in my VCR instead of the one in the TV.

That's my concern to - I've been completely eliminating all products from any company that has recalled any items at all - but I'm just about out of options at this point. A friend started feeding his cat baby food for the time being - I might see what my vet says about that. You might want to check this out: The Pet Food List Based on recommendations I've been reading on various websites and blogs, I'm thinking of trying one or both of these: Kumpi Canidae Both companies offer cat food as well as dog food. The owner of Kumpi has been posting regularly in the recall threads at Itchmo, and seems like a very knowledgeable person with considerable experience and integrity.

It's melamine contamination again, this time in "rice protein" (rice gluten) as opposed to the wheat gluten responsible for the earlier Menu Foods recall: Itchmo on NB recall We'd recently switched our GSD to Natural Balance Chicken & Rice from Nutro Ultra after the earlier recall, and have been alternating that with home cooking. The NB Chicken & Rice does not appear to be involved in this new recall, but after everything that's happened, I'm not at all confident that the full scope of the problem is completely known yet.

I dunno man, that one looks like it might be pretty intense... I'd bet money on this one being a spoken-word record instead of music. Gage was the leader of a Houston street gang who got religion and subsequently became a preacher whose ministry was focused on helping gang members turn their lives around. Most of his former running buddies wound up just like the record cover says, either from drugs or violence. He wrote a book called "A Cop Out On Pot" that went into some detail about his life as a gang member and the events that led up to his conversion. When I was a kid, someone affiliated with his ministry was going door-to-door in our neighborhood either selling or giving away copies of the book, and my parents wound up with one. I started reading it, and wound up being unable to put it down - his unvarnished descriptions of being a junkie and withdrawal-induced sickness were pretty harrowing stuff to my young, impressionable mind.

There's supposed to be a big box set of the complete series coming out later this year, which will contain both seasons, the pilot, and presumably a bunch of extras. I believe the rights to the series have changed hands since the first season was released and subsequently went out of print, but rather than releasing a complete series box straight away, the new rightsholders instead decided to go with a separate second season release aimed at those who'd already purchased the first season set.
