  1. Geez, I only have one each from the two lists: Curtis Amy's Katanga and Marion Brown's Porto Novo.
  2. "B-b-b-b-b-b-bess, you is my woman now..."
  3. Seriously, is this even possible? See here.
  4. Maybe if we pronounce it with a hard "G" it'll be okay (as in rhymes with PORGY and Bess).
  5. Don't think I'll buy the CD, unless it includes a life-size blow-up of the photo above. By the way, do you think her choice to record "the Tom Waits Songbook" was focus-grouped by some panel of L.A. pseudo-hipsters? Maybe for an encore she could do a Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood tribute with, say, Joaquin Phoeinix?

  7. Thanks for that. Nice! Time to pull out that Albertson-produced Riverside disc.
  8. I just might have to get me Smithville.
  9. It's in his book Like Young, a reprint of his liner notes for the 1999 Verve Elite CD reissue of Impressions of a Patch of Blue.
  10. "Orgy" is a registered trademark of the Harvard radio station, WHRB. Just sayin'!

    Charlie Rouse

Social Call is quite good, but Soul Mates is a classic. Agreed!
  12. So sorry for your loss. He sounds like a wonderful man.
  13. Great article! Thanks for bringing it to our attention, 7/4.
  14. Ace in the Hole was the original title. As for the remake with Dustin Hoffman, I missed that one, for which I'm grateful. Title?
  15. I hope you weren't "inspired" by any of his other songs, Chris.
  16. Any more opinions on the quality of the 13 new alternates?
  17. Wow... That should set the cause of getting past White Guilt back several millennia. Or more. Just as I always envisioned it -- a narcissistic/masochistic heterosexual singing to a lesbian. You mean EVERYBODY doesn't envision it that way?! Damn! There's another of my illusions shot to hell! Though, come to think of it, it may be a *little* unfair to refer to Mel as a lesbian. Greg M. Torme suits the role of Porgy in at least one way: he's lame. Is it my imagination, or was there just a touch of sarcasm in the way Steve Allen said "But you've never heard it sung this way" ?
  18. Wait till you're done playing the disc and have to fold it back up. I can barely fold a shirt, so some days it takes me 2 or 3 tries to fold it up right. Tell me about it. I've folded the damn thing the wrong way at least six times already! Jesus! That ain't cool! I think I'll stick with my vinyl...
  19. Nice. Clarke is my favorite drummer, and Cadena's description of his playing is excellent. Man had good taste in drummers, for sure, as he also referred to Billy Higgins and Ed Blackwell.
  20. Brilliant! Thanks, Jim!
  21. Who's Rusty Evans?
  22. Yup! Harvey's one of the best. Very rereadable. His book Romantic Comedy in Hollywood from Lubitsch to Sturges is my favorite, but Movie Love is excellent as well. I hope he has another in the pipeline.
  23. Definitely got that one. Beautiful cover, too, big head shot of Miles in bug-shades and all browns and oranges. It will be forthcoming. One of the great quotes of all time...
  24. Great thread! Youse guys is priceless. Eubie Blake has long been a favorite of mine (since high school in the mid-1970s) and Willie "the Lion" Smith is one of my most treasured personal jazz discoveries of the last few years. I dig that anecdote from Chris about "the Lion" speaking Yiddish. So it's true that he was Jewish and nicknamed after the Lion of Judah?
