  1. There's so many. But one I especially love is the alternate version of "Easy Living" on the Blue Bash CD. Have no idea why it wasn't chosen to go on the original LP, because Jimmy's playing is truely sublime.
  2. already did it. great idea.
  3. Last time I saw him, I had rented out my B3 to the club he was playing. After he got done playing, he looked at me like I was trash and told me to "get that mutha'fucka fixed!" But I'd have probably said the same thing if I were him. Think about it, the instrument he played had stopped being manufactured in 1974. He was forced to play a lot of dogs and near dogs over the years (and yes, mine DID suck!, but it was still the best one you could rent in town). A master like that should have had a beautiful instrument to play every night of his life. You think Sonny Rollins plays crappy saxophones! But, because of the demise of the B3, he was forced to play some horrible instruments. THAT would make anyone crabby. Just to make this point.... Another time he came to town and a friend of mine had just bought a near mint condition B3 and 122. He wanted to have Jimmy play it, so we rented it to the club for the gig. Jimmy came out and LOVED that organ. Played the best I'd ever seen him. After the club had cleared out after the show, he came out, grabbed me (I had the pleasure of opening for him that night) and sat me down at the bench next to him....and began to play the most amazing stuff for about 20 minutes. Just out of joy for being able to play that beautiful instrument. Then he turned to me and said "it's just the blues." THAT was beautiful. I'll never forget it.
  4. The source is a reliable voice in jazz promotion in NYC, currently working the new Joey DeFrancesco with Jimmy Smith CD. She wouldn't blow a false alarm. I must say, I'm surprised that it hasn't hit the wires. Her email arrived around 5 PM eastern. I HOPE somebody's wrong about this.
  5. No.
  6. allen, sent you an e-mail about buying the percy cd. sounds great. i LOVE percy's playing. love to hear some more stories about him...
  7. Can't believe someone hasn't stolen that thing over the years.
  8. DAMN! They did RED TOP!!! And it's not on this!!!! That DOES stink!
  9. ...same thing on the new Groove Holmes out on Water; about 36 minutes....bummer! I didn't know Water had a new Groove Holmes reissue. Which one is it?
  10. I liked Mystic River because of one major difference. Sean Penn can act. Obviously if you don't like the movie you don't like it (& I do agree about Sean Penn). But - Hillary Swank can't act????, Morgan Freeman can't act???? Yep. At least not in this one. Thought Morgan was doing his usually workmanlike job (No Shawshank Redemption performace here imho). And Hillary Swank...totally unbelievable here. And that accent of hers was just plain bad.
  11. Well, got my new Water/Blue Notes today...the Lou and the McDuff. Great Water packaging and attention to detail. Some nice sessions shots in the Donaldson too. One thing I don't dig on Say It Loud. There's an alternate take of Brother Soul that was on a BN compilation a few years back. Good version too. However, it's not included on this new version from Water. THAT's a drag. Why do they DO that?! I mean come on, the original LP length is pretty damn short, 5 songs @35 minutes. The alt. take could have been on there easily and should have been imho. That all said, nice to have Say It Loud on CD FINALLY!
  12. Always amazes me when guys of this caliber play to so few people at times. We ARE a spoiled few.
  13. Wanted to check out the video clip again and it wasn't there anymore. Any way to get it going again Lightnin'?

  15. I once played a gig at a dump called the Starlite Lounge in Dallas. When I went to the car on my break, I saw someone had spraypainted every single car in the parking lot.

  17. Make room in that 1/10 of a percent for me (and my girlfriend). I thought this was the worst Eastwood movie ever. On my very long list of complaints is the awkward pacing of the film. She goes from not being able to hit a speed bag to being 13-0 in about fifteen minutes, whereas you feel like you're stuck in a time trap for the final few days portrayed in the film. In a certain way, the film reminded me of Requeim for a Dream. Both films wanted to hit me in the gut, but both went about it in such a contrived way that I walked out feeling talked down to and a little pissed off. I have a huge amount of respect for Clint Eastwood, so this was a real bummer for me. Glad to know I'm not the only one thinking this thing was a big dud.
  18. I guess after hearing so much bashing of Coleman as a bad fit for the Davis band before I ever heard him....well, when I did hear those sides, I really loved them. To me, Coleman grounded that unit. With Wayne they were off into outer space, which is cool too. I just like it here on earth a little more than Miles did.
  19. *WARNING-this is usually the part of the thread where a witty boardmember pastes up a bad 80's promo shot of the mexican super-group Menudo. But since it's late at night, they're asleep.
  20. Lonnie told me once it was a shame that people wanted to see speed, "you have to pull out the fast stuff to keep them happy" was the gist of it. I get the feeling he could play ballads forever and be fully satisfied.
  21. Hey, I was suppose to have a gig in Corpus tonight. But that place is such a drag, you couldn't get me down there unless the dough was really happening (which it wasn't)! That's a redneck town, no need for a jazz store down there, they just dig Kenny Chesney.
  22. Man, ya'll are some CD Baby freaks. That earland reunion looked cool but the sound quality scared me off. Jim, you might be on crack payin' good money for those Levy CDs, those sounded whacked to me!(but good luck).
  23. Yes Jim. A very nice record. Monaco is a real joy to listen to here. You and I both know that guy is one fantastic organist. When I got his DVD and saw him play "Polka Dots and Moonbeams" in the old fashioned full organ style where you play chord melodies w/ the right hand and double it with single note melody with the left and play bass w/foot (the name of this style is slipping me right now)....wow. He knows how to play that organ inside and out, no doubt.
  24. Yes, that whole "we don't accept genres...it's all music" is just a drag when it comes to actually LOOKING for stuff. Unless you have time to go from A to Z in every genre of music in the world, from beginning of the store to the end, you're screwed. Of course, Waterloo mainly just sells local singer songwriter garbage out the ying yang along with the Los Lonely Boys collection . So, not too many people searching for obscure jazz titles there. A hipsters paradise of mostly crap. As far as jazz went, Tower Records here had a great dept. once upon a time. Then it got lame. Then it went out of business. Like Lon (and almost every other jazz lover in the town I'm sure), I buy most of my stuff online.
