  1. ...Ask Wynton why he played like Louis Armstrong on Blakey's "Free For All" when they played in San Antonio a few weeks ago.
  2. I heard he was Prince's inspiration for "raspberry beret."
  3. Yes, you have passed the test.
  4. ...let me know how you like thier work Jim.
  5. Super choice. I've been eyeing this for a while and now I've got a good excuse to pick it up!!!!
  6. This is for all things Lou. He is THE man. The Art Blakey of the jazz organ world. Every major jazz organist has spent time in Lou's group at one time or another. From Larry Young to Charles Earland and beyond. He is such a master of his instrument, but doesn't get the credit he deserves as someone who made the organ group a viable commodity. Jimmy Smith may have been the man, but Lou was/is the godfather. If you play organ, you dream of being on Lou Donaldson's bandstand one day.
  7. Yes! Freeman-Tuell. In a world filled with people who could care less about their work, FT is a welcome delight. Their phone number is 214-324-1132 Their turnaround is EXTREMELY fast. 3 days and shipped back to you would be my guess. 7-10 days from your door and back I would guess. ...also...I've never blown a driver that has been re-diaphramed by Freeman-Tuell.
  8. After seeing him play a few weeks ago, it makes me wish I'd gone to see him lecture instead.
  9. Baby Face Willette's "Face To Face" session or Larry Young, Grant Green and Elvin Jones "Talkin' About" or Big John Patton's "Oh Baby" session..... or "Alligator Boogaloo"...that would be BAAADDD! ...O.K...I CAN'T DECIDE>>>>
  10. ...that's what I thought. Reverb through a 6X9 speaker always sounded like a weird idea! Anyway, I know the 21H has ruined you for life. Now I want one too! I saw one on ebay, buy it now 875.00 I think. But hopefully I'll run across one locally at some point. It's on the "to do" list if I ever get some bread. Anyway, have you ever thought about replacing the Peavy driver? It might really make a big difference if you could find the old Jensen drivers. I've even got the diaphram replaced in mine and it sounds super great. There's a place in Dallas (Freeman-Tuell) that just recones speakers, and they do a GREAT job at a nice price. Just ship them the diaphram and that's all it takes. A lot of those old Jensen drivers need the diaphram replaced, however most people do it wrong and it still sounds like crap. Freeman-Tuell is wonderful at that....
  11. The B3 is mine! Joe and I actually drove. They would've provided one, but we had planned on booking more gigs along the way and carrying the B3 anyway so when they asked me if I wanted one I said, "Naw, I'll bring my own". Of course, the gigs on the way thing didn't pan out, but it was too late to tell them to get an organ. But it worked out fine. As far as hearing it, I'm listening to the DAT right now... I'll discuss with the boyz if they want to put it up on the web. Cool. Hopefully ya'll will want to put it up! Anyway, is that a 122RV? Does the reverb work on it. If so, how do you like it. I've never played an RV with a functioning reverb... How long was that drive?
  12. Looks like a blast. How 'bout that B3. Was that a rental? If so, how was it Jim? Well...looks like a lot of fun. Now, if we could only HEAR it!!!!
  13. ...thanks everyone. I appreciate the advise. I forgot Philly Joe was on "Time Waits."
  14. Sounds like you guys really blew them away!!! Hope great things come of it. Ya'll deserve it. Picked up the new Ron Blake CD and have really been enjoying it. Wondered when you did the gig if you did any material from it, or if he was just a special guest on your set. Wish we could hear and see it. Maybe some pics up on the site with a few MP3s???
  15. Last year I gave my friend Fukushi Tainaka (he's the drummer for Lou Donaldson) "The Waiting Game" by Tina Brooks. Fukushi used to study with Philly Joe and was totally blown away by that session. He still talks about it all the time. Anyway, I wanted to send him another CD, but knowing he probably has a lot of the obvious stuff with Philly Joe....I wanted to send him something just as great. So, I'd appreciate any suggestions of terriffic, but unreleased till recently, or just plain more obscure stuff.... Thanks..
  16. I pre-ordered this a few weeks ago.... CAN'T WAIT!!!!! I bet the deleted footage is from all those Blue Note "stars" at the time that don't deserve to sit side by side with the legends...Stanley Jordan, ect.... I'm glad they decided to do that.
  17. Of course I like the idea about the unrelased Jimmy Smith session! Never heard of that one. I think 6 Views Of The Blues was a nice surpise. And even though there's a lot of Smith, unreleased stuff should be the highest priority for that man. Especially the Blue Note stuff.... Also...."On Broadway" by Reuben Wilson...I can't believe that's not been reissued...even in Japan to my knowledge.
  18. Anybody have a complete list of what Blue Note series are planned. I've seen the RVG list...but what about Conns. and Rare Grooves. Or is it just too early for word to be out on those? Thanks....
  19. I like the constant "learning" that is required of a jazz listener. Opening my ears to things I'm not familiar with is like getting a mental rubdown. I LIKE hearing things that make me wonder. Exploration is a big part of the fun for me. I ofter wonder why everyday people really seem to "Hate" jazz. I don't get it. And I get that attitude from my wife even. "When are you going to play something somebody wants to listen to?" she asks me when it comes to playing jazz as a musician. It's a drag. And I don't even consider myself a hardcore jazz musician. I'm not playing "Giant Steps" for God's sakes! ...Well, I could go on and on. We all know the deal. We're a very, very, very small minority. But sometimes I wonder why. Although I shouldn't, it applies to all the arts. How many people want to see a small, independent "art" movie...or go see the latest action thriller. Let's face it, people don't really want to think too much. That's why "Friends" is still on T.V.
  20. Yeah Jim, you pretty much told me what I wanted to know. That is...when Larry's doing what he's doin'...is he just grabbing anything to make sounds or is there notes and theory to what's going down. I dig that grabbin' anything if that's what it takes to say what you're trying to say. And like you said, it's easy to tell someone who's doing it right (Like Larry and "Co.") vs someone just fakin' it (I can't do it, it would sound silly). I may not dig everything Larry's doing, but one thing I KNOW for sure...IT AIN'T EASY!!!! That's GD Larry YOUNG...MAN!!!! He don't play kiddie games. And neither do Lee, Gladden or Herbert for that matter. I do know that. But I was just curious, musically, what was happening. Thanks.
  21. You misunderstood. Both sets on Saturday night for Tyner & Hutcherson were sold out (or close to it). I don't know how the rest of their week-long stay went, but Saturday was packed. However, I've been to some concert were there was a pathetic lack of people there. Last year I saw Andrew Hill at the Bakery and there were only about 12 people there. I saw Martial Solal in what was his FIRST EVER appearance in LA and it wasn't even half-full for the first set. A few years back I saw Hutcherson and Harold Land and it was only about half-full as well. It's been my experience that only the really BIG names pack the house in LA. Well, I felt a little better when I started reading you post. That is until you said Andrew Hill had 12 people!
  22. The Mule's description of the frequent low turnout in jazz clubs in L.A. made me wonder. When Sam Rivers comes to my town and can't draw...I don't really question it. Hell, I live in Austin,Texas. Who in the hell gives a crap about anything but UT Football. .... Anyway. Sure, people are pretty much yokels around here. From "the game" to the multiplex theatre to watch the latest garbage...that's entertainment around here. And, in my mind, entertainment=culture. But, if McCoy Tyner can't get 200 people off their ass in L.A. to come hear him play. Well, that's just sad. I guess they're all too busy watching the Lakers or whatever.
  23. Wow. McCoy and Bobby. Two legendary GIANTS in jazz. They don't get much bigger than that. And to think they can't sell 200 seats out a night in a town the size of L.A.... That REALLY makes me question the cultural level of the United States.
  24. I've never been the the Jazz Bakery. However, isn't it fairly small? I'm surprised turnout is usually not capacity if it is. I'm often amazed at the state of jazz turnout in huge cities such as NYC or L.A from the stories I've heard. And also, the relatively short stays in NYC....
  25. Although I recognize the genius involved in Larry's "Mothership." I sometimes question what his playing is all about here. On the title track, Larry's solo just seems like gibberish to my ears (my opinion entirely, not shared by many I know.) I'm just saying, if it's "sound itself" that Larry's going for, as in Ayler's "forget the notes" theory....o.k....that I understand I guess. Does it make for good "music" to my ears? No. Does it make for excitement....yes. Maybe that's the intent. No doubt Gladden and Young really fly through Mothership. But....I dig this date in the sense that I like much of what's going on, in the same way I like Davis' second quintet. I'm a musican numbskull compared to these guys. But still, I'll take "Unity" or "Into Something" or "Talkin' About" any day over "Mothership." And I just don't get what came after this stuff. Larry took the organ as far as it could go. But I think "artistically" he never equalled or went beyond the strides of "Unity." He was reaching for something, but it left me cold. Maybe a musician who knows what Larry's doing here can explain. Jsngry...Free For All....hmmmmm....anybody....
