Thanks Chuck and Bruce. Sometimes i go to the classical section and stare. Now I'll have something to actually look for.

Hey, my computer's REAL slow right now. I had to WAIT for that joke.

I've long been baffled at the lack of websites devoted to legendary organists. To my knowledge the count is a big fat "0". That's sad. The idea the Jimmy Smith doesn't have some fan nutty enough to devote a website to the man is beyond me.

I've long been aware of the connection between jazz and classical music. Musically speaking, where would you suggest I start when looking for classical music that applys to jazz.... Thanks for any help

Sounds great!!!! Just an aside. If you haven't ever checked out "Scott The Organ Freak"'s website. Do. I don't know anything about that guy other than he has some killer live Groove Holmes with Joe Dukes from the early 80's streaming audio on his site. Full songs and lots of 'em. Killer Jack McDuff stuff as well.... Check it out!!!!!!!! Groove's playing through a stack of Acoustic Cabs with some sort of phaser thing on the bass in it's KILLIN'.....

I've been searchin for this for years to no avail. Even e-mailed Heid himself but got no reply....

...huh...that's wierd. I just checked the site again after my post and now the clips are all down except for one.... I don't know what happened, but I listened to most all of the audio clips last night, and they smoked. Appt. in Ghana was especially menacing.

The Blue Note site now has FULL LENGTH audio clips of all the songs performed on the DVD!!!! GREAT STUFF!!!! Can't wait for the DVD...

Yeah, this must be extra material from the live "Living Soul" session at Basie's. That's my guess as well. Either way, I've already ordered it and look forward to it. Any live Groove in his prime is a must in my estimation!

P. Diddy finishes NYC Marathon, raises $2 million

Damn, I couldn't be more sick of hearing about that jerk. -
Well, I like Tower for one reason, Dave the jazz buyer. Other than that... I guess if you like a location on the busy drag with hobos and NO provision for parking your car, it's great. Tower really lost my support when they took away parking validation at the lot next door. Unless I go at night, I don't go for that reason. But I DO like Dave and like Tower's jazz section (and sale prices!) much better. Waterloo's non-sectioning of styles is a big turn-off for me as well. But I think it's an extension of their philosophy, like it or not. I don't like. Anyway, in my opinion Tower never really grabbed hold in Austin like people thought it might. And I do think Waterloo and places like Cheapo have kept them struggling. Oh...and the NO parking doesn't help either.

There's a store here in town, "Waterloo Records" that lets you return any CD for any reason, even if you just don't like the music on it, as long as you have the receipt. For up to a week (or maybe 10 days) after you've bought it. Great store with a great return policy. They also let you listen to any CD in the store before you buy (maybe I should have done that!) That will last until a new owner takes over. There's a store in Ann Arbor that used to do that then the sister sold it to her brother and he cracked down. Can't really blame them, but I barely go there anymore. They raised prices on everything and lowered their buyback prices. It's still a good store, but I just don't make the trip anymore. I think Bol would know what I'm talking about. Waterloo Records is a real cornerstone of the music scene here. For a town that claims to be "The Music Capitol of The World," Waterloo's been around a long, long time. And for good reason. It's more than just a record store in a way, it's a philosophy. There are no sections such as jazz, rock, soul, ect...just everything alphabetically ordered. Constant in-stores and local artist support abound. Tower Records is basically on the ropes because of Waterloo, and has been since Tower opened several years ago. I don't see Waterloo going away anytime soon.

I dig this one most of all as well. Why...well, I think Curtis Fuller is the secret weapon here.

Check AAJ. Hardbop MUST have gone and written a report up over there.

Outside of Jimmy Smith's appearance on Jazz Scene U.S.A and his soon to be released stuff on the "one night with BN" DVD.... I've never really seen any live footage of the masters. I'd love to see any of these guys in action...Lonnie, Patton, Larry Young, McDuff, Holmes, ect... Does anybody know of a source for this kind of stuff. It's gotta be out there somewhere. Thanks for any help.

Diana Krall...come on, don't be a hater
Soul Stream replied to Soul Stream's topic in Recommendations
Yeah, Jim...I have to agree with you. Her actual "singing" is my least favorite part of the package. I like the "concept" and execution of the jazz direction, but her singing seems more of an afterthought for her and is closer to 70's and 80's rock phrasing(Gino Vanelli anyone?) than jazz phrasing and delivery if that makes any sense. Also, I agree the farther she gets away from the jazz trio the worse it gets. And a lot of that has to do with my previous point. Focusing on her singing seems to be hanging your hat on the weakest hook. Although to Joe Blow, her singing and blonde hair is the sell. -
I played a gig. Pretty dead night actually(no pun intended ). However, my favorite costumes of the night were the club owner as Col. Saunders and another guy dressed as Bjorn Borg (he said I was the only one who guessed who he was.)

Diana Krall...come on, don't be a hater
Soul Stream replied to Soul Stream's topic in Recommendations
One thing about Diana Krall, she's surrounded by some of the best musicians, arrangers, engineers and producers available today. So, whether or not you think what's she's trying to do is pedestrian, you have to admit it's done well. I think her "Live In Paris" sounds great. -
I watched Diana Krall on T.V. tonight. A 1996 trio gig at the Monreal Jazz Fest. I don't have her records and don't really count myself as someone who would go out of my way to listen to her stuff. That said, whenever I do hear her, I for the most part like it. I like Russell Malone a lot too so that's a big help. However, I have to say I like her piano playing at times. She did some nice George Shearing and Bill Evans-type things on the t.v. show. So... Anyway, maybe it's backwards day today. I dug Krall and hated Herbie.... Pretty lame I know.
-
The reason I posted this is because this might be the only BN session I've ever put in, listened to, and immediately disliked. Not in the sense that this music is upsetting me, like a Cecil Taylor reaction, but a sincere "this music is doing NOTHING for me." Is this a slam against Herbie, one of the greatest jazz musicians who every lived? Certainly not. But I do think, unlike some, that even the greats fall flat....real flat sometimes. That's part of their greatness. I'm sure many do like this album, and this is all qualified with a "IMHO." However, I'll be taking it back to the store. I've NEVER done that with a BN. Because I always thought that, even if I didn't like the music now, someday I might. But I just don't see that happening ever with "The Prisoner."

Then why are you called "jacman?" -
I never thought spending 10 bucks on any RVG would do me wrong, but I've finally found a Blue Note I can't stand. Not that it's "bad" so to speak, just a big looooonnng snoooozefest. Wake me when it's over. -_-
