  1. Yes, on the Essence Bongo Bop. Very good violin on, I think, all the tracks along with Joey, Lonnie, Doug Carn and Reuben Wilson. Also, Eddie Louis did an album with violin I believe.
  2. Hey Chris, you look pretty good! The only other vision I have of you is interviewing Mingus. I thought you might still be sporting that beard and turtleneck vibe you had. B)
  3. I use spit and a brillo pad, which doesn't seem to work too well.
  4. Live at the Left Bank....Sonny Stitt with Don Patterson and Billy James. I guess it's still available. They're blowing their brains out. Live and bad to the bone. Makes you feel like you found a secret reel to reel tape nobody else has listened to in 30 years. Great, great, great stuff.... BUY IT!!!!!
  5. Man, since seeing Stanley on the "One Night With Blue Note" DVD recently, it made me really re-appreciate his thing. I have quite a bit of Stanley, I REALLY don't need more. I could probably live on "Hustlin'" alone for the rest of my life! But being the never-satisfied individual that I am, I've been contemplating the Stanley Mosaic. Yes, I'm familiar and have some of the stuff on it. Like many I'm sure. However, some of this stuff is unreleased I think. Can anybody who has this care to comment on the musical direction of some of the later material in the box. Some of the personnel make it seem to throw a few curve balls which might make it worth the jump. Plus, Stanley's just so DAMN baaaaddddd.
  6. I have this album. Fred Jackson is pictured on the back, but does not play on the album. Something about he had just joined the band after the recording....
  7. Could you tell us what songs Stanley is on?....Also, where can I order this? Thanks Dan....
  8. ...ah...show business.
  9. Yes SS1, the B3.
  10. Man Jim. I hope what I've got isn't contagious. Anyway, that's a big drag. Like you said, the worst part about being a musician is that you can lose a gig with no notice and then you've got no rent or car payment. You also forget. I've got a steady guitarist, a couple of drummers in rotation and 2 or 3 horns I use pretty steadily. They all immediately lost some good, reliable monthy income. We played last night and all the guys seemed pretty bummed. However, they all said they'd try to hustle up some gigs for us. Which is a nice reversal for me.
  11. Why don't we all just meet up at Lou Donaldson's gig at the Village Vanguard this coming Thanksgiving week. We could make it a yearly trip, and I think our families would understand....
  12. Found out tonight that one of my gigs had cut half their music. It used to be 7 nights a week, so now it's just down to 4 due to financial reasons. I was on tuesday and sun and mon. was cut as well. Made me feel a little better. Guess the economic bounceback hasn't hit my part of the woods yet.
  13. I think this was a good Blue Note reunion. Although, not the "ultimate." Too many of the main players are missing. Wayne, Horace, ect. I think the Jimmy Smith/Lou/Stanley/Burrel/Tate was the "ode to soul-jazz." Think about it, in the mid 80's John Patton was a TOTALLY forgotten man. His history, along with Grant Green's, has been re-written in the last 10 or 15 years. But in the 85, he, Reuben Wilson, ....Sam Rivers and a host of others were virtually forgotten.
  14. Thanks Dova and MikeWeil, That's good advice. The economy more or less cost me one of the gigs. As they put it, they were "deleting" Tuesday night entertainment (which was me.) Anyway, the owner just left a message on my machine...no notice, my last gig was last night (unbeknownst to me). I guess I need to call him back and make nice even though it'll make me want to throw up. Something may come out of it again someday. But like you said, entertainment's always the first to go. Although the manner in which it was done was pretty disrespectful. But then again, since when has a club owner respected a musician. My other weekly gig will still continue until Thanksgiving. That club owner is a great guy and I've admired him keeping me at his place as long as he has. It's a popular spot, and he could have bailed months ago and not lost so much money on me! In all honesty, I've been pretty lazy about hustling up gigs since I'd landed these two weekly gigs last year. So now it's just time to hit the path again....
  15. Thanks for the encouragement. I hope I can bounce back soon. I'll miss the steady playing immensely. Also, the money wasn't great...but me and my family will miss the extra 500 or so bucks a month it brought in on a steady basis. Also, my sidemen were really, really, really bummed as well. I felt bad. I'm determined not to let it get me down. It's just tough that it happened all at once, literally. But, thanks again.
  16. ...man, just got fired from both of my weekly gigs. all within the span of 30 minutes... I'm super bummed.
  17. I watched more last night when I got home. One thing I noticed that really disturbed me and screams unprofessionalism...that is there are MANY instances where the footage of the performers doesn't match up to the music. This is lame, and I don't know why it was done. Editing 101 I would think. ...also, 333...I agree. Cecil Taylor is total crap. To end it on Cecil flailing away, well that was a letdown ending to say the least. And just like the old Blue Note days, I'm sure Lou, Stanley, Kenny and Co. were all laughing their asses off at Cecil backstage. Those couple of downsides are miniscule compared to the beautiful moments that occur again and again. Still, Appt. in Ghana is the highlight for me and that isn't even my favorite "style" of Blue Note. So that's saying something. Moanin' seemed a bit sloppy, but Curtis Fuller steals the show imho on that one. And Walter Davis Jr, is a joy to watch and hear!!!! The Hutcherson stuff is also a nice, quite respite. Beautiful. The whole thing is a joy. I could go on....
  18. Picked this up today. THIS IS SOME BAD, BAD STUFF!!!!! Man, Jackie and WOODY SHAW on Appt. in GHana...Wow. Woody Shaw looks and sounds really good. Jack Dejonette, Cecil McBee and McCoy kill that tune as well GET THIS!! Anway, too many highlights to cover right now. But it has been totally re-edited from the original footage. Shots are wider, better, and the clarity is perfect. The sound has been warmed up and is really good considering the shitty digital audio source they had to work with. (this isn't and excuse, its sounds real good no excuses really) Anyway....Jimmy Smith, Lou...oh and STANLEY TURRENTINE..another guy I'd never seen in person. He looks SO good. Tall, slim and blowin'...
  19. I'm all for helping out with the costs. Lord knows ya'll put in the time and effort. You shouldn't have to foot all the bill as well.
  20. My mom and dad wouldn't have known Groove Holmes if he hit them over the head with a B3.

In this case let's hope for a PM from some friendly fellow board member .... Now all I want...is to know how you did the girl flipping in "The Flip." THAT'S baaadddd!
  22. Hey, thanks!!!
  23. I always dug listening to WBGO when I was around the area. I know this has been touched on before, but what other NYC-area jazz stations are good online. What's the one with Phil Shapp?
  24. Brad, I don't know how to link (I'm just lucky to be here ). Anyway, if you just do a search on "Scott the Organ Freak" it'll come up. Once you're there, he's a got a section about old jazz organ clips or something like that. It might take a minute to find it on the site, but once you do...it really takes you back to the early eighties at a time when Groove was groovin' and nobody cared.
  25. I always feel lucky that I planted roots early here (insert slap on self's back here ). Anyway,.....Jim Alfredson's Organissimo BB and BNBB refugees....2 great things that go great together. Thanks for all the work Jim (and Joe and Randy (O.K. you guys are draggin'. )
