Unissued Rare Groove Organ sessions on Blue Note
Soul Stream replied to Soul Stream's topic in Discography
Nice work Swede!!! Lots of great stuff there. Surprising how much amazing organ group material is still laying around unissued. No doubt much of it is well worth issuing. I was especially surprised at the amount of great looking Reuben Wilson there was. His reign was at the end of the BN era and I think he was lost in the shuffle once Liberty got there, although obviously they did lots of sessions but never put them out.... Interesting stuff. -

Ronnie's Bonnie is on Reuben's "On Broadway" LP that was issued. This is a different version from an earlier session...also Baby, I Love You was redone for "On Broadway" Nothing to do with Love Bug. -

Have to agree 100% Chas on all counts. "To Seek a New Home" is definately a great session more in line with Moon Rappin' than Who Knows. In general I wish someone (even the Japanese haven't RVGd a lot of these type of sessions on BN) would take some Water-Records-type care and appreciation in reissuing these.

Just read this while killing (er....loving) a few minutes at B&N. Nice writeup, Bob & Jim! Who's on the cover of this JazzTimes?...I'd like to read it, but when someone says "this month's"...I'm not sure what that means anymore considering they put those mags out so early.
-
Don't know if it was mentioned before...but McGriff's "Something To Listen To" on Blue Note is another i'd like to see come out.
-
That's it...Thanks Swede!

Just wanted to revive this thread. Again want to throw up Reuben Wilson's "On Broadway" and "Set Us Free" as two I'd love to see. A VG+ copy of Set Us Free just sold for 120 bucks on Ebay. I really do freakin' miss those batches of Rare Grooves. Looking back, those were some of the happiest CD buying days ever for me.
-
Also want to add Reuben Wilson's "On Broadway" and "Set Us Free" LPs to the list of wants... ...by the way...can anybody help me find the Bring Back Rare Grooves thread? I've searched and can't come up with it. Thanks...

Sorry to hear the news. Sounds like you really had a time Randy. My only exposure to Winston was the CD he did with Jack McDuff. That CD blew a LOT of folks minds. Another great one gone. Ceaser Frazier had some good stories about Winston....seems like he really helped Frazier when he was getting going with lots of encouragement.
-
That's a shame. My only hope is that means they can now do a proper US RVG of some of these titles. As of now we have a total of ZERO John Patton US RVGs ever released.
-
Hey Lon...so sorry to hear the news. I knew she had been battling this for quite some time. Not sure what to say other than I hope you're doing O.K. Mike

Dap-Dippin' with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings
Soul Stream replied to JSngry's topic in Recommendations
Hey Dan...good eye. That is THE Ian Hendrickson-Smith. He's a full-on member of the Daps these days and has been for a while. Ian actually plays Tenor now live and they have another guy playing Bari live. Ian and the rest of the horn guys came out an sat it with me after their gig a couple of weeks ago here in Austin. They are BAAAAAADDDDDDD...., and Ian in particular is just about my favorite cat! -
I'm not really up on all the series that Japan BN has going...but I just bought a TOCJ 1500 series CD. *note...I figured this out...just the series number of the og LPs...duh! Thanks anyway.

Update on Japanese Blue Note Cds
Soul Stream replied to steveswr's topic in Offering and Looking For...
The ones I have are from 99, and they do not inidicate whether they are 24 bit, but they are paper sleeve mini LP style. No mention of RVG anywhere. I don't think he's invlvoved, there is a wider stereo spread than on some tracks I also have on RVG editions. Does anybody have track listings for these...? -

Steve, not familiar with the TOCJ 66000 series...could you post a link or show an image of on of them? Also, are the 24 bit paper sleeve mean they are RVG remastered? Thanks. -
Charles "The Bird" Parker + Hammond organ
Soul Stream replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Artists & Recordings
Where can you get this? Is this on CD or old LP only? -
Been a long time coming...seen it for many years and finally made the 27 buck plunge for the CD....worth every cent. GREAT session.
-
You forgot this one too...full choir to boot. http://youtube.com/watch?v=-tUOhn3Y2oo ...Jim do you even LIKE jazz anymore?
-
Wild Bill Davis "Midnight until Dawn" on RCA...live at Grace's Little Belmont in Atlantic City.
-
J.A. is tenor player Jimmy Anderson. John Patton told me this himself, and Thelma has mentioned it as well in conversations after John's death.
-
May I suggest Kirk's Works w/ Jack McDuff? I would say definately Lou Donaldson's "The Natural Soul." You also might dig Patton's "The Way I Feel" and "Oh Baby"...both available on the Mosaic Select.
-
I really dig Louis Armstrong & The Oscar Peterson Trio....and also Night Train. Wish I could have heard O.P. in person... looks like I'm condemned to a lifetime of McCoy/Herbie/Chick clones too hip to swing. RIP O.P.

I think George has these for sale on his website....www.georgebraith.com....if not, just email him through the site and I'm sure he'll sell you one. Dig it!
