  1. Thanks for hipping us to this. I would have never have found out. I really dig Joey as a sideman on other's albums. Especially when a lot of standards are served up. Thanks again, looking forward to hearing them.
  2. Yeah, I've been soaking it in hot water with epsom salt before all my gigs.... I don't know if it helps a ton to be honest, but the warm water loosens it up enough to play w/o a lot of stiffness...
  3. Does anybody know what kind of specialist you would see for this sort of thing?
  4. That reminded me that Jim and I did a gig at a function for Magic Johnson, back in our MSU days. He was cool enough. Wow Mike! Sounds like a hip gig you've got going there! Yeah, Joe...it's really turning into something! I dig it alot. So nice to have a good gig. Especially since it wasn't that long ago I thought about quitting as I couldn't get anything together and the places to play just didn't seem to be all that plentiful. So I'm really grateful.
  5. The more important question to me, Mike, is whether or not they seemed to dig what you were doing? Yeah Dan! David Byrne sat right up front the entire set and visibley dug it, really listening hard and not talking to anyone, he gave us 100% of his attention..head bobbing..applauding, and left a big tip. Kurt Russell I just saw in the room and he just seemed to be having a good time watching the band and hanging out. Music celebs that have been out in the last few weeks and been real nice and dug the band have been Fiona Apple, Joan Jett, the drummer for Blondie (I forget his name..but raved about how much he dug the group). The place where I have my gig is fairly new and is turning into a hang for celebs when there in town. Alot of these folks may not have ever seen an organ trio, so they really seem to get into it for the most part. This gig is really a lot of fun. (The Stones are in town next week so I'm crossing my fingers )
  6. I'm doing my gig Suday night...and I look in the front and see David Byrne from The Talking Heads. Then I look to my right and see Kurt Russell. That's a jarring combo to see 10 feet apart. Any other musicians have any wierd celebrity sitings at their gigs.
  7. Hey Peter, Yeah, I told the physician the story and that I'm a working musician who needs his index finger. He told me to lay off of it...but I'm worried it's more damaged than I might be led to believe. The swelling and stiffness is lingering. I'm gigging every night and it ain't helping it. I'm not sure what to do at this point.
  8. Even better....WWBJPD....What would Big John Patton do?.... A tire jack fell on his hand in the 90's and basically disabled his middle, ring and pinky fingers on his right hand. Amazingly he managed. Music's in the heart not in the hands. That said...I'm still unsure how to progress from here...
  9. We'll...my doctor just called and told me I need to take 2 to 4 weeks off from playing to let my finger heal back up properly. ...uhhh...
  10. Funny, my DR. didn't tell my ANYTHING. He said "Let's xray it and see it it's broken." Then his nurse called and told me it wasn't broken. I asked her to have him call me back for advice and I never got a call. The guy knows I'm a working musician and that this isn't just a jammed finger that'll not cause much of a problem for the everyday person. It's still swollen and hurts....damn. I've got a gig every night now til tuesday. damn it.
  11. I jammed the hell out of my index finger on my right hand about 10 days ago. It's slowly getting better, but since I have gigs 4 nights a week, 3 gigs on consecutive nights...it's taking a while. It still feels wierd and is tough to get through the nights I play without really getting into some pain. I went to the doctor and had it xrayed. It wasn't broken thank goodness.... Any musicians have had this problem and know some good things to do. I'd love some advice. It's range of motion is not getting a heck of a lot better, ect...
  12. Yesterdays.... Laura.... Old Folks....
  13. I'm with FFA...in the sense that it's not the tune...it's who's playing it. Sure we all have our favorites, ect. Mine seem to change over time. That's the great thing about music. One thing I know for sure is, that my favorite players...I like every tune they play on.
  14. ....I think you get my drift...
  15. I'll throw the "Wayne Shorter Book" in there as well as his tunes are the most abused by those who shouldn't be playing them. Only the best of the best I think can/could handle these sorts of tunes. Call a traditional standard, and the Wayne Brigade will usually roll their eyes.
  16. That is funny as hell. I think I threw up in my mouth a little too from laughing at that one. ...by the way...were is Robbie Benson now....
  17. I find the melody and harmonic structure of Stella to be extremely interesting and fresh. Tough tune to play, but a beautiful melody. Grant Green, Miles, Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt's versions are some of my favorites. Hank Mobley really makes it on GG's take.
  18. Hey, you guys sound like you're reading my set list from last night. I actually played Stella, Autumn Leaves, Rainbow, How High The Moon, Surrey With The Fringe On Top last night....and do quite often because I really love those songs..... So, ya'll don't come to my gig 'cause you'll hate it! (by the way...Summertime is just about the only tune I just can't stand. Except the way Trane plays it)
  19. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBSZkgryi7Y Some nice Erroll Garner
  20. Yes, I LOVE both the chartbusters CDs with lonnie. He gets to play on standards which he doesn't get much of a chance to do on his own solo releases ...so it's a big treat.
  21. yes, awesome recording. Dr. Lonnie kills it....very,very, very good imho.
  22. I dug the way the original CDs were laid out. Great tracking even if it wasn't the original LP sequence. Although the RVG is a marked improvement in sound....many times I grab the old version to listen to in the car just because there's more songs on them and I'm used to that old CD order. It's really great listening.
  23. I feel pretty out of my league here. I don't even own a Bob Dylan record. Not even the current one, although I've heard most of it on the radio and at Borders. So, I really can't comment about it other than I think it sounded good and I like the vibe, the production and Dylan's voice and what he was saying. I don't think you'll be hearing wailing guitar solos from DF in this context. It's not what the music is calling for....and that's one thing DF always keeps in mind. The stuff I heard, DF sounded super tasty to my ears.
  24. I play with DF whenever he's off the road with Dylan, as in just last weekend. I get the feeling that BD just digs his working band and had a lot of ideas and songs he wanted to record with them while they were hot and together. I think BD realized he had put together a pretty nice little blues band and took advantage of it. I'm not much of a Dylan expert, but doesn't seem like there's nothing wrong with that. If people would quit bitching that he's not as good as he used to be, maybe they could enjoy some good music. Ripping off blues guys...shit that's ALL blues guys do...is rip each other's shit off. You think BD doesn't know he's twisting that stuff to his liking....being a thief in a long line of thieves.
