Board Member SEK has died
Soul Stream replied to Chuck Nessa's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I was just looking at the threads he posted on and realized that roughly half were Happy Birthday threads he contributed to. That says a lot about the man right there. Nice guy, who will be missed. Sad to hear the news. Goodbye SEK. -
They Got A House Music Show On KNTU Now!
Soul Stream replied to JSngry's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
...I know that guy too. (and the ching-chinga-ching usually has the sound quality of a railroad crossing signal) -
Stan Killian. He's in his min-twenties...dark hair. Half Irish/Half Mexican . Great guy and a great Tenor player. Keep an eye out for him.... His father is jazz organist/pianist Joe Killian who took over Baby Face Willette's organ trio gig at the Morrocan Village in Chicago after Baby Face got fired for wanting more money. So, Stan has some good roots. His dad also played with Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt.

A show on House Music is good news?.... I guess I'll leave the stick up my ass. Jim...ahhh...do you even LIKE jazz anymore? I get the idea that jazzbos gotta broaden their horizens, but isn't this more of a personal quest for Sangrey? -

John Patton covered "Man From Tanganyika" in 1969. -
God I love what he did on Donald Byrd's "Slow Drag" LP. He and Smilin' Billy really hooked up on that session.

This is one of my favorite Mosaics. Well worth the money, and this music isn't readily available elsewhere. Lou is in his prime here. I mean, just wonderful stuff.

Sad news. I always thought his recent work to be astounding. Those Kansas City jazz/blues guys...man, what a lost traditon that is.

I actually thought the Korla Pandit clip was very interesting. He was doing some amazing things on the organ. Very cool. I'd like to hear more from him.

I'm amazed at what's been described as "lame" or not very good.... Brothers 4?!!! AMAZING Soul Electricity is one of my all time favorites...Stitt and Patterson killin' standards. I'll say it again. This is THE era of the B3 and Prestige was knockin' 'em out at the time. I love all this stuff...

Personally, I think they're ALL very good. I remember a time when you had to go to a freakin' record convention to get ONE of these LPs and it would be a scratchy mess and STILL cost you 30 bucks. When this series came out I was all over it and still am. If you can afford it, get the entire series. Just my 2 cents.

Dude, get the Trudy Pitts!!!!! That Legends of Acid Jazz Trudy Pitts/Pat Martino CD is really glorious. She's really killin' and I dig her vocals too. Bill Carney/Trudy Pitts/Pat Martino were a working unit and this is a nice documentation of what was going down at that time. Awesome. Trudy Pitts rules (and Pat ain't bad either. )

THANKS!!!! That works GREAT!!!!

Horrible Pop Songs That Make Great Jazz Tunes
Soul Stream replied to RDK's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I'm not sure why anything about a Dionne/Bacharach/David collaboration should be in question. They've made hands down some of the best music ever. Those songs are mini-masterpieces to say the least. A triumph of songwriting, lyrics and voice. -

I got the issue and found the piece on Jimmy's induction into the Hall Of Fame very good. I really enjoyed Grady Tate chiming in on some of the things they did on Verve. I didn't detect any sort of bashing going on.... DB calling Organ Grinder Swing Jimmy's pinnacle is certainly right on. That record is just such a monster. -
No matter how "influential" it may have been, Electric Mud sounds like crap to me. Just my opinion. I think that's my point. "Electric Mud" isn't something I ever got into. It was one of the albums you skipped over in the used vinyl when you were looking for the "real" shit. That said, I think it takes fresh ears to imagine things that even the artists themselves may have not imagined. I'm sure Muddy thought that LP was lame. But Chuck D. of Public Enemy loved the hell out of it. It influenced HIM and HE went on to make great recordings. Much could be said of the New Grass Ayler. Maybe a hardcore Ayler fan doesn't dig it. But the guy who plays sax for Charlie Hunter may put it in his top 10. I guess this is the point of the conversation when I say..."it's all good." Once "art" is out....it\t's out of the artist's and critic's control. The "the people" can make whatever they want out of it.

Now that's some funny stuff.
