There are "possiblilities" that this may be Herbie's biggest sellout. Must need a new beach house. ....can't wait for his duet with Toby Keith on the follow-up.

On July 31, 1966 the Left Bank Jazz Society held a concert at the Crystal Ballroom in Baltimore with John Patton, Grant Green, Harold Vick and Hugh Walker. Since many of these concerts were recorded, and many have since come out on CD, how can I find out if there is an existing tape of this. Who controls the Left Bank tapes, and does anybody know how to contact them? Thanks for any help....

AOTW Oct.2-9. John Patton "Let 'Em Roll"
Soul Stream replied to Soul Stream's topic in Album Of The Week
One Step Ahead is another way that Patton, compositionally, takes something very, very simple and (some may say) overused by organists and twists it in such a way as to make it completely fresh. In this case, Patton takes a plain ol' minor blues in C and by doing 2 simple things, give it an "otherworldly" quality. Firstly, his chord inversions on the head vamp give it a more open feel than what say, Jimmy Smith, would use. Secondly, he does it in 5/4 time. Other than those two twists, this is just a regular minor blues. Also, check out Patton's comp behind Green at @1:58, it's CLASSIC Patton comping from this time period. Only Larry Young and Patton frequently comped like this. And last, but not least...the solos all around have just a wonderful, wonderful feel to them. Patton, again, does a full organ ending which is something he didn't do a lot in general, but did several times on this record which is interesting to me. -
AOTW Oct.2-9. John Patton "Let 'Em Roll"

I've got a JRVG of this and you can really hear Big John's touch on the pedals on this. I think the U.S. CD is very, very, very light on the bass on this one compared to the original album and/or JRVG. John had a real nice sense of the pedal board. Great ear. -
loading copy protection stuff into itunes?
Soul Stream replied to Soul Stream's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I think I'll try this. I've tried the other ways, and haven't gotten it to work for whatever reasons.... Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! -
I've got the 2-CD reissue of this. It's perfect. Original LP on CD1 with all the alts on the 2nd CD. And the alts on THIS particular album are all master take worthy and wonderful.

Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane

...I guess when you really want to hear something, a burned copy's alright....so next time this subject comes up.... -
Thanks. I'm sure I'll pick this up at some point. Love Quebec, and very interested in hearing these organists whom i'm sure come from any earlier-pre-smith mindset which is very interesting in it's own right to my thinking.

I bought Dexter Gordon's "Manhattan Symphonie" and when I tried to load it into my itunes, it refused. Must be copy protected. Can this be done, or have I screwed myself with this one.

...and there's a t-shirt too?! damn... -
Hey...how's the Quebec? Picked it up twice to buy it and then put it back. Too much bread unless I KNOW it's going to be something I LOVE.
-
I think I saw that guy on Dr. Phil yesterday.
-
...I wasn't even going to buy this set to begin with. Too much of something I'm not a huge fan of to begin with. But now...I have to have it. Their marketing plan is working. Those evil bastards.

I heard through the grapevine that last night Randy got high on Crystal Meth and nobody could find him, so some local filled in on drums for the gig. Joe picked up a hooker and got his wallet stolen. And Jim was violently ill throwing up all night with the flu. And that was just the first day out on the road with Organissimo.

organissimo to open for John Scofield!
Soul Stream replied to GregN's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Hey Greg, can you post their itenerary up? Didn't even know they were gone at this point. It'd be nice to keep tabs while they're out.... And, it wouldn't be "being on the road" UNLESS you had a cold! -
organissimo to open for John Scofield!
Soul Stream replied to GregN's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
He's comin' to Austin next week....was hoping he'd have Willie Weeks on bass. That's who I kind of REALLY wanted to see. Not a big Sco fan, so probably won't make it if Weeks ain't there. But, if Organissimo was opening, I'd damn sure go! Congrats again, you guys are on a well deserved roll. -
Tenor player w/ biggest influence on players today
Soul Stream replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
I don't know where you guys are, but down here in the outer regions of the jazz universe...guys still trying to play Wayne and Joe Henderson. -
Funny how time drastically changes our opinions and opinions of ourselves. Just think if we lived to be 1000 years old! Lord knows what we'd think looking back. Anyhow, great writing, even if it was of the Larry Kart '79 variety.

I don't know this guy...but he must be on crack! I see what he's trying to say, but it just ain't flyin'. Does he expect 2005 NOLA music to be a replication of Jelly Roll Morton jazztimes? Hell, let the Parisians revive it all, they've been doing it for decades. Don't the Nevilles, Kermit Ruffins, Meters, Snooks Eaglin, Nick Payton, Irma Thomas, Dr. John, Irvin Mayfield, Galactic, and on and on and on....should they all be down at Preservation Hall playing tailgate trombone? Come on, New Orleans music is thriving and striving ahead as usual because there's a hell of a lot of musical talent there and always will be. Sure, there's peaks and valleys. Times change and NOLA changes with the times. To say New Orleans' days as being musically relevant are over, well, that's just stupid.

Sorry Larry, Your originally screwed up liner notes from 1979 are still screwed up in their originally screwed up way. I did notice upon reading them that there seemed to be some incontinuity(sp?), but the general vibe came right through. Especially thought your observations about Lee Morgan were dead on. Great session, and would love to see more of your writing on these Blue Notes.

Bought 3 today at Borders. The Jackie, Booker and Hill. Put the Jackie in first and really digging it. One of his best and Lee is on fire...Lee makes this date extra special. Think Larry Kart really summed up my feelings on his liner notes. Lee and Jackie are a match made in heaven on this thing. *...and also, I've officially given up pretending I like stuff like the Don Cherry.

AOTW Oct.2-9. John Patton "Let 'Em Roll"

...just a few thoughts about The Shadow Of Your Smile. This is a beautiful rendition of a song that was SO popular in the 60's that every jazz musician working the chitlin' circuit certainly had to have it under their fingers. Lots of recorded versions and Patton's is certainly one of the best. Lou Donaldson did this with Dr. Lonnie Smith on organ as well on Mr. Shing-A-Ling, great version as well. This is, to me at least, one of John Patton's greatest recorded solos. The way he snakes through the changes is beautiful. Not a wasted or sour note. I especially love his triplet figure as he starts the solo. Also, this is a great time to note what a beautiful sound RVG gets from the organ on this date. He really brings out the best in Patton's sound, and I think it's one of Rudy's best jobs in that regard. On Shadow Of Your Smile, you can really feel Patton's touch on the B3. -
Not to mention Larry wrote some great liners to the new Conn. of Jackie McLean's "Consequence." Really nice stuff.

Loved Nipsy as a kid, a late night talk show guest/hollywood squares-kind of guy that brought a lot of laughs. The older I get, the more I miss these kind of entertainers. Just some simple laughs.
