  1. I see Jim's point. Many who obsess over Evans, as players that is, are usually pretty lukewarm on the emotional front and don't respond well to others prodding them too much in the "let's stoke the fire"-kind of way. These are all generalizations, but I find them to be true many times. There's all sorts of jazz to be sure....
  2. ...almost forgot. There was a ken & barbie newsteam couple-type that introduced Wayne. They were absolutely horrible. They even mentioned that Wayne had a lot of "Hits" and alluded that Wayne Shorter was a "group" of 4...alluding to the idea that they didn't even know that Wayne was one person...uggg. Perez told a friend of mine after the show that during the introduction, Wayne just looked at him and said "America."
  3. Seems like San Antonio gets better big name jazz than any other Texas city. Just this year or so I've seen, Herbie, Wayne, James Moody, Wynton & LCO, Joey Defrancesco and others in SA. I'll post if I see anything else come up.
  4. I couldn't say who really has the players (my instinct would be Houston), but as fans go, I'd have to give it to San Antonio. A small, but at least very knowledgable group of old-timers hidden in that town. Plus they have a full-time straight ahead jazz radio station which I'm not sure exists elsewhere in the Texas big cities.
  5. I can't imagine that the band didn't notice the vibe. Although, they're such professionals and Wayne and Co. such geniuses that their message got through despite the audiences impuleses. Kind of like taming the savage beast. Wayne's music said it all and was so undeniable, even to a Lynard Skynard-type crowd. Now THAT is what great music does.
  6. Yes, they were. Sorry, no pics...no camera. And as far as a set list...uhhh...to my ears, he played one continuous piece of uninterupted music for an hour a fifteen minutes. Although I'm certain there were "songs" in there that others would recognize, I didn't. A very odd concert. Free to the public. Wayne and corny dogs, enchiladas and budweiser. Drunk rednecks behind me kept screaming "CRANK IT UP!!!!" at the soundman so many times that he eventually yelled back to them that this band was playing acoustic instruments as oppossed to the electric instruments of the bands previously. That made sense to the rednecks sort of as they then mumbled "yeah, them other guys were playing electric stuff." Definately the weirdest concert environment I've ever been in. Wayne didn't seem to notice although the hollering and beer shouts were certainly distracting throughout the whole show.
  7. So, I go to San Antonio yesterday to spend the night. My wife was running a mini-triathalon on Sunday morning. We get into the hotel downtown yesterday evening and find out Wayne Shorter is headlining some sort of convoluted city-sponsered Jazz Fest (the rest of the lineup was Smooooth Jazz!?). Anyway, so I walk a few blocks down just in time to see Wayne Shorter walk on stage and hit his first note. An hour and 15 minutes later I leave fully satisfied I just stumbled onto the best jazz show in the world last night....
  8. Now that's when "pop" music was king. Monk was sittin' on freakin' Jukeboxes.
  9. I think Lester Young meets the Oscar Peterson Trio is a great place to begin if you are a hard bopper. The sound is great and the playing is tremendous. I always come back to this one.

    Prez...

Everytime I hear Prez, it sounds so fresh.
  11. Yes, Back at The Chicken Shack and Midnight Special NEED to get the RVG treatment soon. They are some of the most beautifully recorded and sounding organ sides ever made.
  12. Jimmy Smith is akin to Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in the sense that they have SO many Blue Note titles that you're bound to have one in each batch. Actually Jimmy's been short-changed a bit in comparison. So my arguement would be, more Jimmy...less Jazz Messengers.
  13. Does anybody know if the new batch is copy protected? That Dexter I bought was and I couldn't load it into my computer. If that's the case with the new BNs, I'll just stick with what works.
  14. Who the heck is May Lou Donaldson and why would she be at your door? Bill collector? ← May Lou Donaldson is even funkier than Lou hisself...you ought to hear her blow!
  15. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAN!!!!! YOU KNOW YOU'RE MY FAVORITE!!!! Have a great one! May Lou Donaldson come to your door and play Happy Birthday on the alto....
  16. ...yeah, the more I listen the more Donald Byrd just ruins it for me....I guess I'll change my mind to what everyone else thinks. So, on second thought, this album sucks. Go find Lee Morgan's "The Rajah."
  17. Wow, I was unaware of that...have to check that out.
  18. I really like all the Arnett on Prestige. Great listening. A real master. Weinstock did a great job teaming Arnett with younger, more "modern" players, and the results are fantastic since the young guys play with nothing but respect and admiration and "for" the music. ...thinking specifically of "Movin Right Along" "Party Time" and "More Party Time"...Tommy Flanagan, Bobby Timmons and Ray Bryant all do a great job on piano on these sessions, not to mention Art Taylor, Sam Jones, ect and others....
  19. Seems like Donald Byrd gets a lot of grief from "people in the know." Glad I'm not so smart!
  20. I have that same crappy cassette. I still play it. ← The one w/the white case? ← Yes...that's the one.
  21. Nice interview w/Rollins on Fresh Air yesterday (posted on another thread). His age is really becoming noticable in that booming, powerful voice of his. Makes me think of how we should enjoy and celebrate Sonny all the more while we've still got him on planet earth. Long live Sonny. Last of the Mohicans.
  22. I have this session on a crappy XDR cassette that sounds like hell. But the MUSIC is absolutely some of my favorite Mobley. I always forget this until I pull this cassette out and remind myself. Anybody else really, really dig this session? Hello? Blue Note...can't believe they haven't got this thing out on a CD recently.
  23. A big THANKS! to Soul Stream for letting us know about this concert! (If only I had received my Crusaders box 2 days earlier!) ← Thank YOU for the great review and pictures. Made me feel a little better since I couldn't make it up to Dallas for the gig. Thanks again!!!!
  24. Is that an online coupon?
  25. DAMN!!!! You did make it~! So...can you give us a rundown of the show? At least how everyone sounded and what it felt like? Was it a public concert? Thanks for sharing!!!!
