I can't think of any BNs that I haven't heard that I REALLY want to hear. Even some classics that I have no interest in for whatever reasons...Herbie's "Inventions" comes to mind. (coming out of the closet, not a huge Herbie fan)

One of these days a huge piece of flying alluminum is going to take one of those guys out. I guess then they'll do their reports inside. As for Shepard Smith, too bad the guy didn't say F-you AND punch him. What a dolt.
-
I'll try and remember. Seems like it was in one of the more recent national jazz rags....
-
Blame the Weather Channel my friend! BTW, that Jim Cantore dude has got some cojones and even he kept his ass out of NO! ← Now, we can only hope Anderson Cooper gets blown away.
-
Alright Dan, but what about the guys standing out in the wind shouting into their microphones.
-
Night of the Cookers is just a tag, a handle the club can put on the gig to promote it a bit. Nothing wrong with that. It's a cool title. And good music or not, those were great musicians on that album. Musicians working is the bottom line and ain't nothing wrong with that.

I'm not saying it's not a supremely dangerous situation and evacuation was a must for NO. However, you could hear in the media's voices that they wanted this thing to be a cat 5 with 165 mph winds and a 28 foot storm surge. To warn that those were possibilities is one thing, to proclaim it as fact as they were is typical media hype. And another thing. Do we really need to see these reporters out in the 40-60 mph winds screaming into a microphone? I video shot outside the window shows us how windy it is.

Testosterone is the same whether guised in a backwards baseball hat, baggy-G trousers or a tie dye t-shirt. Let's face it, for the most part music fans are young men, and for the most part that means a lot of male peacock flambouyance needs to be part of thier musical message.
-
I, for one, would have gladly paid for that. Michael Cuscuna specifically mentioned this series as an afront to the reissue community in a recent interview.
-
Now they're saying the storm surge is going to be 10-12 feet. A big difference from the 28 feet they were saying before I went to bed. Another case of the media massively overstating things.
-
From my understanding, there's no stopping the storm surge at this point (even if given a considerable weakening) to topple the levee. NO will be a swimming pool, no matter what the wind speeds are. That's where the devestation will be, the massive flooding once it breaks the levee. That levee is history.

Box Design sucks Miles/Trane Col. Compl.
Soul Stream replied to Soul Stream's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Wish I'd known. The Metal spine may LOOK cool...but it sucks when you try and use it. Looks likes some nice liner notes SOMEWHERE in there...but to pry open and KEEP IT OPEN is a damn struggle....guess I'll just listen to the music. Also, don't get why the alt of Bye Bye Blackbird isn't on the EITHER new CD reissue of Round Midnight!!!! These guys really love chumps like us. -
I got the Complete Miles and Trane on Columbia box set not too long ago and have come to the conclusion that this is the WORST goddamn design for a box set I've ever encountered. The tracks aren't listed on the CD themselves OR the individual CD sleeve. So, I have to try and hunt it down in the booklet somewhere! Then you try and do that and the goddamn binding is so thick that you can barely turn any of the pages enough to read any contents.... This thing SUUUUUUUUUX.

I just looked at CD Universe for Lonnie's upcoming RVG of "Turning Point." VERY disappointed there's no extra material there. Only 5 tunes to begin with. What? NO alternates, ect.?.... Can anybody tell me about the session details from their BN disc? Thanks in advance....

Sonny Rollins
Soul Stream replied to Tom in RI's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Listened to clips and the sound quality seems fairly low. I know that's not the point, but.... Also wonder about the lone trombone I hear on parts, sounds like a pretty mild partner to Sonny's genius. -
We're so used to the medias overhype of hurricanes that it has made us complacent of REAL danger. This storm isn't a joke or a media event. It will wipe New Orleans out if it hits at that strength. And the potential for it weakening seems very low at this point. This is going to be a devestating event. I love New Orleans and can't imagine what's going to happen there.

"Lenny" is the old Stevie Ray Vaughan tune. I remember hearing that they covered it. Seems like an odd choice, but no doubt the guitarist probably brought that one in. Maybe next they could cover "I Believe I Could Fly" like James Carter's organ trio.
-
I think part of what "we" are not getting is that these guys spring up from the hip hop generation. Beats and repeatition are at the basis of that kind of music, thus it's a major part of what Soulive does. However, I rented my B3 to Soulive once and saw up close just how phenomenal that organists left hand basslines were. He's definatley surpased what Leon Spencer Jr. was doing with his left hand back in the funky day. But to get the left THAT funky, you HAVE to sacrifice your right hand when soloing....the addition of a great sax player would make that band a lot better imho.
-
I always find it odd that the same kids who are so into "jam bands" are bored out of their skulls when listening to any sort of modern jazz. Of course, maybe these jam bands are creating future jazz listeners as these kids age and begin to open up a bit.
-
I think the guys in Soulive a really good musicians. I know the organist has a monsterous left hand for funk bass which is amazing. That said, the formula they've come up with is ...strong on funk, long on heads, tightly arranged, but short on improvisation or diversity. That's a winning formula for college kids wanting to party, but runs a bit thin for somebody that's been listening to Jimmy Smith or Sonny Rollins, ect.... However, it IS nice to see an organ trio, no matter what they're doing, being that big playing purely instrumental music. Now THAT'S amazing!
-
Miles sells because it's great music that gets a great push from Columbia. Like it or not, he's THE jazz musician of the 21st Century. His scope went from Bebop to Hip Hop. Nobody did that but Miles.

The double guitar harmonization/lickfest of the Eagles "Hotel California". :bwallace2:

Johnny Mosaic gets my vote. -
Organ Cds That ARE NOT Greazzzzyyyy..
Soul Stream replied to Soulstation1's topic in Recommendations
Barry "Frosty" Smith is the drummer for the organ trio I have with guitarist Denny Freeman. He's a bad mutha. -
I can't think of a record that Joey Defrancesco has played on the doesn't, by default, basically become a Joey D. record more or less. He's such a powerhouse and the organ is really 2 instruments in that it covers the bass as well, that the organist always is a huge part of that equation. Someone said this is at the top of the jazz charts (or radio playlist charts) and I can see why.
