  1. The thing that I love about bass is that it is a true litmus test of a listening musician. If you have a great bass player that listens to the harmonic flow of a group and wrangles that into something even more beautiful...THAT's beautiful. A great bass player just makes everybody in the group sound so much better if they're that good. That's fun. That's what playing music is all about. Bass players and drummers that want to command and lead the group where THEY want to go are a drag. Unless they're Art Blakey or Charles Mingus that is.
  2. Your welcome Jazz Kat, My only advice would be to take professional lessons from an upright/electric jazz or classical player. Learning it correctly and being able to read music will be keys to your success as a valued musician. Versatility is the key to longevity.
  3. Jazz Kat.... I'm such a huge fan of the bass. I think if I had it all to do over again, I'd pick up the bass and never look back as a kid. It plays such an amazing role in music. As a youngster, many times we look at instruments that are solo-worthy...guitars, pianos, ect. But as you grow older, you realize music at it's best is a communal affair. That's why bass becomes very, very, very important. Not to mention, solo bass is also very beautiful. So....don't grieve the guitar too much. Being "religated" to bass may have been the best thing to have ever happened to you. But you do have to WANT to play it and love it.
  4. Imho bass is THE instrument. All others fall in it's wake. Be a BASS player. Not a disappointed guitarist. Forget the guitar. Throw yourself 100% into bass and you're chances of having a successful career in music has just increased 100 fold. Good bass players are the hardest musician to find. Great ones even harder. Those that do it well gig more than even great drummers imho. One reason I started on organ was that I could play my own bass. This was from first hand knowledge that good bass players are impossible to find (especially when the breat ain't all that great). Be a bass player Jazz Kat and forget every other instrument. Study the greats....Blanton, Brown, Watkins, Chambers, Workman, ect. Play upright and electric. Take lessons. Study the instrument. When the guitar player that replaced you is working his day job in 10 years....you will be gigging if you practice hard.
  5. My fav has always been 26-2 as a tune. It just seems to swing super hard using Coltrane changes.
  6. I also found a nice version where Ray Brown plays it Ballad style on arco bass on his "Some of my best friends are..piano players) CD. And a nice latin version by Irvin Mayfield. Nice to see ala' Slide Hampton that Ray Brown, the ultimate master, sees justice in doing it as a ballad.
  7. Dude...you've been going on and on about organ records and you ain't even heard Groove's Misty!!!!! That's crazy talk. That's like saying you dig Miles but ain't heard Kind Of Blue. I hope you did a spit take all over the Starbucks customers.
  8. But what does "Deelightful" go for on Ebay in that condition usually? Seems to me average BNs in play condition go for around 25-40 bucks on the average.
  9. My 14-year old son and I recently rented a few of the old Beavis and Butthead videos. His mother wasn't amused, but we were laughing our asses off! A great father-son bonding experience! ← I actually used to work on B&B with Mike. Every once in a while I'd also do a voice for a character (like a convenience store clerk, bartender, ect). Still my favorite show he's done. Never been a fan of "King of the Hill," even though that's been his huge career success so far. He just wrapped on a new movie that will probably be out early next year I'd guess...the concept sounds pretty damn funny, but if I told you I'd have to kill you.
  10. Been listening to a lot of Reggie Workman as of late. His tone is so deep and choice of notes and flow so beautiful. Are there any bassists here who could expand a little on what they think about Workman's concept?
  11. Hate to be a name-dropper. But since I feel like this place is home.... Mike Judge is one of my best friends. I'll pass on the kind words.
  12. Yes. I've got quite a few original Blue Notes...but you know what...I NEVER play them. It's rare that I even play my CDs for God's sakes these days!!!!! Everything's on my iTunes! I used to think it was fun to have a real deal Blue Note. But the truth is, they sit on my shelf unadmired. And another thought. I used to work at a Pawnshop for many years. Haggling was part of the job. When someone thought I was being unreasonabley high price-wise, I just told them "fine, don't buy it." And that's the bottom line, that record store may be sky high in your opinion. But it's THEIR perogative to ask whatever the hell price they want to ask. If it's too high they go out of business. But getting bent out of shape about 80 bucks for a beat mono copy of Deelightful....well, I'm sure Ebay should straighten the market out for you.
  13. I just did a Giant Steps search and found this thread. Good stuff, especially from Jim as usual. Especially the Slide Hampton stuff...taking it at ballad pace. That's what I've been doing. I'm not capable of really playing this. Just understanding it, even at a ballad tempo is odd. But my ear really digs the SOUND of the changes, they're very, very pretty beyond the testosterone implications of proving oneself. I would like to play it even at ballad tempo even just to learn, but don't know if I can make any music out of it personally.
  14. To tell the truth...ummm....I know this is blasphemy....but, I've never been a big follower of Wes Montgomery. I mainly bought this for the rhythm section, but I think these guys play better elsewhere. Wasn't blown away by this one even though it's considered a legendary album. Maybe you had to be there at the time it came out.
  15. Although Bennie is connected with Bitches Brew and other more "out" kind of things. He seems much, much, much more of a traditional player at heart than someone like Marion Brown. I couldn't imagine Marion Brown holding up Live At The Lighthouse in the tradition that Maupin does....(not a knock on Marion)...thus, side by side on stage I could understand someone not thinking Maupin was taking things as far out as Marion Brown.
  16. I totally agree. I also don't think Maupin had it in him to fill Wayne's shoes. But the particular "Maupin" that showed up for those "IS" sessions came pretty damn close. Closer than almost anyone I've ever heard from around that same time (plus or minus 5 years, let's say). PS: Another interesting Maupin sideman date is the extra "bonus" session from the Conn of Andrew Hill's "Lift Every Voice" (with Lee Morgan). Maupin is also on some of the material from the recent Andrew Hill Select too (two closely related Hill sessions with Charles Tolliver and Pat Patrick -- and the longer of the two sessions with strings). ← Thanks for the reminder of Maupin on the Hill Mosaic Select. I've been on the fence about getting it, but pulled the trigger tonight. The Dance clip on the site was killing me, great stuff.
  17. I've thought about getting this for no other reason than Maupin. Not a big Chick fan especially and the sound clips kind of reinforced my hesitation. Lots and lots of piano notes flying aimlessly about...but if Maupin's on fire I might bite. Thanks for the suggestion. Also...Maupin takes a solo on "Sidewinder" from the Lighthouse that has the audience freaking out. Maupin raises the roof on that thing.
  18. Where's Jimmy Scott playing? GOT to make that gig.
  19. I thought George Bush was the greatest American that ever lived. Or was it Dick Cheney? I can't remember even though the T.V. keeps telling me. These are heady times we live in.
  20. Thanks for the input....gonna have to track down some of these things for sure... Good to hear he's still at it.
  21. Really been diggin' Bennie with Lee Morgan on !Caramba and also his "Live At The Lighthouse" stuff. Past faves also are his work on Lonnie Smith's "Turning Point" and Taru. He's a guy I don't have much on...mainly the sessions I mentioned above. However, I find (much like my Dizzy Reece jones) he's a guy who's conception I really, really, really dig. Does he still play? I know he's still alive and made a solo album not that long ago. He must not live in NYC or it seems he's be gigging more high profile with his talents.
  22. Cereal is like C rack...just not as expensive.
  23. Oh my God! A true believer! You're a unabashed badass.
  24. Dropped a good chunk of change on this...sounds to me during Portrait of Jennie it's obvious snap crackle and pop of a LP transfer. Anybody else have this reissue? Also, the bogus announcer guy sucks and interrupts the music. Couldn't they have taken that crap out? They took out the overdubbed strings, couldn't they lose the bogus fakey live announcer thing..it's horrid and disrupts the music.
