  1. The "Atlantic" Trane has always been my favorite. I could see why you O.D'd on this stuff Lon. I've been loving it for years, but this is my second stint of almost nothing but Atlantic-era Trane for several months in the last 5 years. Haven't O.D'd though . Something about this whole era that's captivating. He's still playing changes here (Giant Steps), but then is dipping his toe modally (Favorite Things). Also, that combination of Giant Steps Changes combined with pedal point bass ala Body And Soul or The Night Has A Thousand Eyes...I LOVE that feeling of those two concepts coming together in one song. Whereas later he went more strictly modal compositionally.
  2. I'm finding since I'm using my ipod and itunes more than anything else these days, box sets have made a comeback in my listening habits. Just load what I want on the ipod and listen away. ipods are just a music-lovers godsend imho. it makes all these box sets I have something I now can listen to regularly.
  3. Just snagged this box on the net and am wondering if anyone here has it. Have all the Trane Deluxe Edition CDs and really dig those. However, didn't have all the extra takes the box set does. Also, don't think Bags and Trane has been reissued on the DE. Any comments?
  4. I know there's been a lag in the AOW. But I think it's a very worthy endeavor. I often will use it as a library, to read up on a CD I'm interested in purchasing. Or just to read other's thoughts on an album I'm into. So...my fellow organissimos...now's the time for all good men to step forward...
  5. Is that the one with "Rock Candy" on it? My God, that's intense! ← Yes, that's the one and you're right. That's about as smokin' as it gets.
  6. Patterson "The Exciting New Organ Of" (reissued on CD as Legends of Acid Jazz Patterson Vol. 1) McGriff "I've Got A Woman" McDuff "Live" Groove Holmes "Soul Message" Shirley Scott ....Stanley Turrentine's "Hustlin'" These are the meat and potatoe titles. Many more, but these should be first imho.
  7. Does anybody know if there are any recordings of John Coltrane playing Giant Steps live?
  8. I used to pay to snipe since "free" ebay snipers were so slow and always seemed to lose the auction. The pay sniper really worked, but I'm tired of paying. Been trying to buy things on Ebay without sniping lately and it's next to impossible to win anything unless you want to pay a ridiculous bloated amount. Anybody use a site they like?
  9. I don't have a lot of Lovano. But, you don't get where he is by being a bad musician. Like the style or not...that's a personal choice I understand. But that guy is a great musician. Something I respect immensely.
  10. Also noticed an exchange before take 1...went something like this...l Voice 1(Coltane I'd presume)-"I want to tell a story, not just make the changes." Voice 2-"Well if you make the changes, that IS telling a story!"lol Voice 1-"Yeah, but I don't want to tell no lies!"
  11. Thanks Rosco... Funny enough. I was able to download all the additional Giant Steps material (the 9 extra takes) off of iTunes!!!!! Glad I didn't have to buy the box to get that stuff as I was super interested in hearing it. Thanks again.
  12. Yes, my mistake it was released pretty much right away. ....by the way...does anyone have the Heavyweight Champion set? Was curious as to the last CD which has a ton of Giant Steps false starts and incomplete takes.
  13. Just picked this up today. Really, really enjoyable.
  14. Just got this in the mail today....only just put it on. But right off the bat...it's hot. Diddy Wah is just as funky in the most non-chiche' way as music could be. Hill's world is a speacial one that's always an ear and mind-opender. This is sure to be one of the all-time great Mosaics.
  15. O.K. Jim...keep in mind I'm still learning the chords as a ballad! Was also listening to Countdown today and thinking....O.K...NOBODY should have attempt that one at that tempo.... It made me think GS might not be as bad as it gets. Also read in the reissue liners that Giant Steps LP was recorded in 1960 but wasn't released until 1964. Could you imagine a musician today recording something like that and then the record company sitting on it for that long. Guns might get involved.
  16. Love all these titles and it's the first batch I'm 100% on. The Leo is nice...dig the Mobley and of course the Lonnie and Turrentine.
  17. Thanks for the good advice Rosco. As someone who's been tackling this a while. Can you give me a digital exercise that's a good starting point?
  18. C'mon Jim you know music ain't a competition! I heard a nice version of Giant Steps by Javon Jackson. He seemed to just take the changes as they were and do something that HE would do over them. Didn't really sound like Trane at all to me. Anyway, that's kind of beside the point. I guess I would just say as a set of changes, they seem like something that would be fun to improve up over the years. I don't plan on breaking this stuff out anytime on a gig in the next 50 years...but at home it's nice for kicks.
  19. I voted Newport because I really dig One Up One Down on that recording.
  20. Are there certain patterns that are helpful to get soloing on over the non-iiVI sections? I still getting the chords and their proper inversions under my fingers at a nice pace. Might be trying to lamely solo sometime soon but might need some suggestions if ya'll have any. Sangry....I know you've said these changes aren't something you feel are part of your musical makeup. I certainly respect a musician who knows who he is (I certainly don't!). However, these changes seem fun and a nice diversion from the usual way of thinking. Like to see your take on it.
  21. One of my favorite versions is Marchel Ivery's version on his "Marchel's Mode" CD. Cedar Walton is on the recording and, from the liner notes, the producer asked the guys to play Giant Steps. CW was pretty reluctant but was persuaded to do it. Needless to say the whole band kicks and Marchel really kills. He's my hero.
  22. Jim, just slam a six pack.
  23. Hey Noj...I'm the last of 5 kids....I remember actually using the same milk as my brother! Needless to say we ate a lot of generic brands growing up....
  24. I'm against anything like punch-ins on any sort of jazz session. That goes against the whole idea of the jazz concept to me. It's not suppose to be perfect. That's WHY it's perfect. Perfectly imperfect. But on the other hand...I'm not against an edit if it's needed. I guess this stems from the fact that some of my favorite jazz tracks have sometimes pretty obvious edits in them.
