  1. thanks for the heads up, bought one last night. been wanting it for a while.
  2. http://chetbakertribute.com/chet.htm Check this Baker website out. Some KILLER video, even footage from the Live In Tokyo concert.
  3. Yeah, he's killin' on "Live In Tokyo" no doubt.
  4. Maybe "dismissed" by the critics largely would be a better classification. I think his star looks, drug battles, lifestyle and "whitebread-ain't-no-miles" all helped in squashing people's interest in his full talents. I personally always felt a little self-conscious for liking Chet. Shouldn't I be diggin' Clifford Brown instead? Until I realized Chet's melodic gift and outright speed (yes, listen to him on All The Things You Are on the live set) is in a class of it's own really.
  5. Say what you will. But I've been listening to the live stuff of Baker w/Russ Freeman and co. from back in 53 and 54 and Baker is burning.... some of the most fresh, inventive and imaginative trumpet playing imho. O.K....so stone me...let the haters begin.
  6. I just went back to Boston for a week after living there for a couple of years. It has been 4 years since I left. I forgot how thick that accent was. But, the whole trip was so much "wicked" fun I thought I'd have a "hat" attack. Texans sound pretty silly I'll admit, but when I ever pass through or visit the deep, deep south...it makes me feel downright edumacated.
  7. Well...too bad. Lot of musicians, not a lot of representation. Nice going on the Baker's landing. Hopefully, the guys can find someone else to fight for the cause.
  8. must've missed something while I was away.... I guess GregN ain't managing anymore?
  9. oooweee~! ya'll are smokin'!!! Jim, you're killing. joe was burning on that cedar tune as well. now THAT's a band. keep on keepin' on. (sax was a nice addition )
  10. Hey how was the Baker's gig? Been gone all week in Boston, so might have missed some other posts about it....
  11. Hey Jim, be sure to extend that celebration to Baker's Keyboard Lounge. Now THAT'S gonna be a birthday party!
  12. Yes, Soul Stream....ahhh....that sounds familiar.
  13. Saw Frank Hewitt got a nice 1 page article in the new JazzTimes with Sonny Rollins on the cover. Nice article. Remember Jim taking about him and returned to the thread. Ordered "Not Afraid To Live". Looking forward to it. Nice to see his playing has finally achieved some success. Too little too late to be sure. But, aside from these Small's guys taking interest...seems like we would have never had heard any of this.
  14. Like I told my wife after seeing the movie...."Revenge of the Sith jar jar stinks" (o.k., she didn't laugh either).
  15. Yeah, but that still doesn't make it any less violent for a 9 year old to see....and clearly the marketing is to little kids as well. ← My bad, marketing to kids obligates parents to take their kids to see it. ← Imagine you being 9 years old, and told by your parents you can't see it!!!! ← Yeah, it's a PG13 rating. Thought they could have made it a PG like the other Star Wars movies, this is the first one with a PG13 rating. Thought the violence and graphic stuff was un-starwars-like and needless. But the trend is violence and Lucas is going with the trend apparently. As a parent who tries filter out graphic/violent movies, it's getting harder and harder. Decapitation isn't something I even want a 13 year old viewing. My son won't be seeing this one. I just rented the original for him to see since he was cranked from all the Star Wars HYPE. Like it was said, YOU try and keep a 9-10 year old boy from wanting to watch Star Wars. Needless to say, it's a sore point of contention around here. In a world where real people are being decapitated on T.V. in Iraq. It seems in bad taste to say the least.
  16. Glad to hear you got your dose of Braith this morning. It should be required! Extension is absolutely his Blue Note masterpiece. "Nut City" is a standout for me. George said he wrote it while in Atlantic City...hence the title.
  17. That's another thing.... My 9 year old boy wants to see this (what boy doesn't after all the hype and commercials on tv). But I think not. Horrid decapitation in the first 5 minutes and a grotiesque full body burn scene that drags on and on....I thought Star Wars would bring back a kinder, gentler action movie. Too bad. Movies are just plain too violent these days.
  18. Just a reminder...if you haven't listened to any George Braith in a while, do yourself a favor and slip on one of his Blue Note sessions today. It'll bring a smile to your face, warm you heart, tickle your brain and make you tap your foot. That's hard to do!
  19. We'll probably be seeing it from Water soon, since they seem to be one step ahead of my tastes these days.
  20. Hate to be the thread downer. And I realize you're either a super fan who'll dig almost anything this series throws at you, or you're like me..a regular guy who can't really remember the storyline of any SW movie. But, saw this yesterday expecting, from all accounts, a great movie...and found it laughabley bad imo (maybe not so humble at this second). The villian General Whatever looked like a bad Lego creation. The special effects all looked very dated to my eye. At one point, the dragon-thing Obi was riding on looked like bad claymation. And the dialogue...uggg. I mean Anakin ACTUALLY screams "NOOOOOO" into the void of humanity. The script read like "Days of Our Lives." At one point, I turned to my wife after what seemed like an endless "Dr. Phil" moment and said.."Is any 'Star War's shit going to happen in this movie?" Kind of anti-climactic when the final sword fight scenes all involve charactors you know will all live because of the "future" episodes we've already scene. So in short, this is for die-hard fans only. The rest of us should just rent the original Star Wars at Blockbuster. Sorry for such a big thumbs down.
  21. Yes, Water is kicking both BN and Mosaic (especially the Selects) in the quality department these days. They just seem to care more about each title they put out. And the titles hint at a connossieur's eclectic sensibilities.
  22. Ahhh!!! King Ubu comes through! I tried his email link but it wouldn't come through. The list link did work. Wow, what a list. Perhaps at least one of us would have something he would want to trade with and then go from there.
  23. How was the show? Any pics?
  24. ← ...guess we'll have to plan our next vacation to germany. but seriously, wouldn't this be on a DVD somewhere in Europe at least? Maybe Pete Fallico would know. ←
